LSU football players are in support of Lane Kiffin’s decision to add players who are fighting in the courts for a fifth year of eligibility. Former Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright is one of those players who started practicing with the team this week. Junior tight end Trey’Dez Green says he’s glad Wright is on the team for now…

Wright, edge rusher Junior Tuihalamaka and dozens of other athletes have a preliminary injunction hearing tomorrow to determine their egibility status moving forward. The players seeking a fifth year of eligibility are part of the high school graduation class of 2022 and they say it’s unfair they were excluded from the new NCAA rule that allows athletes to compete for five years over five seasons.

Tomorrow’s hearing begins at 11 AM inside Judge William Jorden’s courtroom.

The Rapides Parish Police Jury says a child who swam in Cotile Lake last weekend has been diagnosed with Shigella, an intestinal infection caused by bacteria. Symptoms include diarrhea, stomach pain and fever. Most people recover on their own by resting, drinking plenty of water and taking antibiotics.

On Friday, the state is slated to move millions of dollars in uncashed tax refunds to the Unclaimed Property Division of the State Treasurer’s Office. The average uncashed refund is more than 750 dollars, and Byron Henderson with the Louisiana Department of Revenue points out with almost 23-thousand people yet to cash their refund checks, those amounts add up.

As football season gets underway, the state is reminding you that smoking marijuana on a school campus or within two-thousand feet of school property is now a felony, punishable by up to a year in jail and a thousand-dollar fine. Pollock Representative Gabe Firment authored the legislation after hearing football fans complaining about smelling pot while tailgating.

LSU players appear to be cool with former NFL players signing with the team so close to the first game of the season. Notre Dame transfer defensive end Junior Tuihalamaka and former Ole Miss and NFL tight end Dae’Quan Wright are now practicing with the Tigers. Senior linebacker Whit Weeks says they have been valuable additions and the team is not distracted by outside noise.

The Brookshire Grocery Arena in Bossier City will host the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships for the next three years, starting in February of 2027. Bossier City councilman Brian Hammons says they are excited to welcome the SCAC student-athletes, families and fans.

It’s important to note that even if that money does get transferred to the Unclaimed Property Division, the rightful recipients will never forfeit that money, no matter how long it goes unclaimed. Henderson says if that money does go into Unclaimed Property, they can claim it in one of two ways.

Ten NCAA Division three schools belong to the SCAC, including Centenary College in Shreveport. The SCAC is entering the 25th season as a conference and Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry says this is the first time their basketball tournaments will be held at a neutral site…

The 2027 event will be held February 26th to the 28th. The top six men’s and women’s teams from the SCAC will compete for a conference championship and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division Three Men’s and Women’s Basketball championships.

Hanberry says holding their conference basketball tournament at the Brookshire Grocery Arena is a huge milestone for the league…

The SCAC says the 2027 championships are expected to generate a 650-thousand dollar impact to the local economy.

Quarterback Sam Leavitt says the team leaders wanted their coach to do what he thought could make the team better.

With football season getting underway, Governor Jeff Landry is alerting the public about a new state law that makes it a felony to smoke marijuana on a school campus or within two-thousand feet of school property. Landry says anyone convicted of violating the law could face up to one year in prison and a one-thousand-dollar fine…

According to Child Care Aware of America, the average cost of childcare nationally is 13-thousand dollars, but childcare is not as expensive in Louisiana. The report says childcare for infants or four-year-old is around eight thousand a year in Louisiana and for school-aged children it’s about six-thousand dollars.

Tomorrow a Baton Rouge judge is expected to rule if several LSU football commits and other athletes should receive a fifth year. If the plaintiffs are successful, the NCAA and the SEC are expected to appeal.

Department Spokesman Byron Henderson says if that happens, those checks become void, and they can claim that money in one of two ways.

September is Love Our Waterways month. Those of you with boats are encouraged to pick up a bucket at your local marina and head out onto the water to pick up litter from the surface. Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser says even if you don’t have a boat, you can still participate in the cleanup effort.

The LSU Alumni Association launches its Tiger Nation Challenge for 2026. Vice President of Development Lauren Griffin says this year, in honor of LSU’s big game against Clemson in the real Death Valley, they’re having a friendly competition with Clemson’s alumni association to see which school can raise more money.

Griffin says since this is a friendly competition, the winning school will merely get the satisfaction of winning.

New LSU starting quarterback Sam Leavitt makes his Tiger Stadium debut on Saturday night when the 13th ranked Tigers host 23rd ranked Clemson. When Leavitt played at Arizona State last season, the Sun Devils averaged 54-thousand fans for their home games. The crowd for Saturday night’s game will be nearly twice that, and he’s fired up for it…

Leavitt says he’s as healthy as ever and the mental side of his game has only improved since coming to LSU.

Three LSU baseball players were ranked in D1-Baseball’s top 50 transfer pitchers for the 2027 season. Gonzaga right-hander Landon Hood ranked number-2, USC righty Diego Velazquez was 14th and South Florida junior right-hander Kaden Smith was 46th.

Louisiana Tech opens the football season against Northwestern State Saturday. The Bulldogs returned graduate linebacker Kolbe Fields. Fields was the preseason CUSA Defensive Player of the Year last season and dominated through the first five games before a season-ending knee injury. He says he’s had opportunities to go to other schools, but he isn’t interested in a one-year deal, and nothing can replace the relationships he’s built in three years in Ruston.

One of the most anticipated games in Tiger Stadium history is just three days away as LSU will host Clemson. ESPN reporter Marty Smith says LSU has told him that this is the most media-celebrity-credentialed game in Tiger Stadium.

 

The Louisiana Department of Revenue says there are still thousands of taxpayers and businesses who received a paper refund check for the 2025 tax year and have not deposited that check. If it’s not deposited or cashed after Friday, the money will be transferred to the Unclaimed Property Division of the State Treasurer’s Office. This year, LSU is holding a friendly competition with Clemson to see which school can raise the most money. DOTD is launching the “Buckle Up, Phone Down” High School Video and Pledge Contest for 2026.  Rodney Mallett with DOTD says while the video contest is in its second year in Louisiana, the “Buckle Up, Phone Down” Challenge is actually a national initiative that’s been going on for years.

There are prizes for the best videos – five-thousand dollars for first place, 35-hundred dollars for second place and 15-hundred dollars for third place.

The Louisiana Democratic Party is opposing constitutional amendment four on the November third ballot. The proposed amendment would prevent a governor from serving another term after already serving two terms and sitting out at least four years. Democratic Party Chairman Randal Gaines says if a former two-term governor wants to run again, voters should decide whether that person deserves a third term.

Chalmette Republican Mike Bayham authored the proposed amendment. He says the change would bring new ideas to the governor’s office

The Louisiana High School football season kicks off tomorrow and according to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Ruston is ranked as the best team in Class 5A over the Karr Cougars, who are coming off back-to-back undefeated seasons. Neville is ranked number one in 4A over Westgate. In Class 1A, Haynesville and Ouachita Christian are ranked one-two.
