The Tiger Island wildfire continues to burn in Beauregard Parish, more than two weeks since it started. We spoke with Beauregard Parish Sheriff Mark Herford who says progress continues but they’re not out of the woods yet.

A Simmesport man was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Avoyelles Parish on Sunday. 40-year-old James Dibble Jr. of Simmesport was struck by a Mazda 6 driven by 40-year-old Mary Cazelot on Old Highway 1. Cazelot was arrested for felony hit and run, obstruction of justice, and driving under suspension. The investigation is ongoing.

The State Fire Marshal’s office says two people died in a house fire in Monroe over the weekend. Authorities say a 43-year-old and a 39-year-old died in the blaze that investigators believe started in the bedroom. Investigators say unsafe smoking practices may have started the fire.

Republican Jeff Landry says he has $ 8 million in cash on hand and has raised $3 million since July in his bid to be governor. Campaign finance reports for all of the candidates are due September 14th. And there is a statewide televised debate tomorrow, but Landry is not participating.

Lafayette police say an 18-month-year-old male who was in the hospital in critical condition from injuries sustained September 1st has died. Police say the child was in the care of 18-year-old Alayjay Kennedy at the time. Kennedy has been arrested and faces first-degree murder charges.

Extreme temperatures and drought stress could have an impact on the state’s crawfish industry for next year.  LSU AgCenter Area Agent for crawfish production Todd Fontenot says producers are already adding water to their fields to reduce cracking.

Authorities say seven inmates at the DC-3 women’s prison in Cottonport escaped early this morning. As of Tuesday afternoon, two remain on the run. Tim Ryan with the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office says the escapees were given a ride to various locations in the Bunkie area and they are not sure if it was a coordinated effort with individuals outside the facility…

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a nationwide ground stop by all United Airlines flights, due to an equipment outage. The FAA says United crews were unable to contact airline dispatchers through normal means. The issue is limited to United and its subsidiaries.

Five of seven female inmates have been captured after escaping from the Women’s Jail Facility in the town of Cottonport in Avoyelles Parish this morning.   Authorities say they are still searching for two females -24-year-old Gerri Wooten from Jonesville and 23-year-old Autoria Denice Lachney of Marksville. Anyone with information should contact law enforcement.

Pregnant women were three to seven percent more likely to exceed the recommended weight gain during the peak of COVID-19 than before the pandemic, according to data from Pennington Biomedical Center. Director of Reproductive Endocrinology Dr. Leanne Redman says the results mirror other natural disasters but the post-pandemic weight gain is starting to lower.

The state’s extreme drought conditions could have an impact on the state’s $230 million dollar crawfish industry.  LSU AgCenter Area Agent for crawfish production Todd Fontenot says the lack of rain increases salt levels in water sources. He points out that flushing introduces a salinity problem for crawfish producers.
