New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick spoke to city council committee members in a plea for a new facility. She described the wretched building conditions with inoperable elevators, air conditioning, plumbing, and high marijuana evidence eating rats in the 60-year-old headquarters.

Governor Jeff Landry has told lawmakers Louisiana is failing its students and cited a report that ranks the state 46th in education. Council for a Better Louisiana president Barry Erwin says Landry is asking legislators to create an Education Savings Accounts program, which would use taxpayer dollars to help families send their child to a different school.

Agile Cold Storage announces plans to invest 46 million dollars in the first cold storage facility in St. Tammany Parish. St. Tammany Corporation CEO Chris Masingill says it will create dozens of jobs…

The company estimates the project will result in a total of 195 potential new jobs. The new facility, will be located in Pearl River, will prepare fresh food for transportation by blast-freezing and packing it for shipment.

More is known about the fatal shooting involving a Calcasieu Parish Sherriff’s deputy last week. Louisiana State Trooper Derek Senegal says during a traffic stop on I-10, 37-year-old Quinton Baker of Alabama, was killed when he drove off with the deputy while he was inside the SUV conducting a search. The vehicle struck a concrete barrier, crossed three lanes of traffic before striking several trees. Baker was pronounced dead at a Lake Charles hospital. Senegal says the deputy responded appropriately.

Approximately two kilos of cocaine were recovered from the vehicle.

While addressing the New Orleans city council committee members in a plea for a new facility, Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the wretched building conditions and reminded members of a recent tour of the evidence room.

Kirkpatrick stressed the need to move to another building and their proposal to lease two floors of the DXC building on Poydras Street. She says the move would allow them to house dozens of administrators who are exposed to the current deplorable conditions at current headquarters.

And it’s not just high rats and roaches in the evidence room, she says the uncleanliness throughout the buildings is off the charts and presents a myriad of health issues for employees.

Kirkpatrick also described the inoperable elevators, air conditioning, and plumbing in the 60-year-old headquarters.

Masingill says the space will have highly automated, multi-temperature and conventional warehousing and logistics support. He says the building will house primarily poultry for export every week.

The state offered Agile a competitive incentive package that includes a performance-based grant of $1.5 million that will reimburse the company for site improvement expenditures, contingent on board approval.

Masingill says the synergy from the parish and state played a vital role in Agile’s decision to choose Pearl River. He said they also liked the logistics the area provides…

The company expects to begin construction on the 150,000-square-foot facility next month. And operations are set to begin in the first quarter of 2025.

The 2023  Chevy Tahoe then struck a concrete barrier, and traveled across three lanes of traffic, a ditch, and struck several trees before coming to a stop. Baker was pronounced dead at a Lake Charles hospital and the deputy sustained injuries as well. Senegal says the deputy responded appropriately.

The deputy received injuries to his neck and back along with abrasions and lacerations. Approximately two kilos of cocaine were recovered from the vehicle.

Winston spent four seasons in New Orleans appearing in 21 games and throwing 20 touchdowns. And the second ranked LSU softball team improved to 23-0 today with a seven to four win over third ranked Texas.

Quarterback Jameis Winston is leaving New Orleans for Cleveland. Winston has reportedly signed a one-year, eight million dollar contract with the Browns to serve as the backup quarterback to Deshaun Watson. The 30-year-old Winston has spent the last four seasons with the Saints. This past season he only completed 53-percent of his passes for 264 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Saints have yet to sign any free agents, but they’ve added another year to linebacker Demario Davis contract. The 12-year NFL vet and team captain has signed a two-year contract with New Orleans. Davis was a Pro-Bowl selection last season.

The Atlanta Falcons have been busy. They’ve agreed to a four-year contract with quarterback Kirk Cousins, giving the Dirty Birds an upgrade at the Q-B position. Atlanta has also reportedly signed receiver Darnell Mooney to a three-year, 39-million dollar contract. The former Tulane star is coming off a down year in Chicago.

The second ranked LSU baseball team will get ready for the start of SEC play by hosting North Dakota State over the next two days. The Bison are just 3-and-11 on the season.

ULM will host Ole Miss tonight. The Warhawks are coming off a sweep over Alabama A-and-M. Northwestern State will host Louisiana Tech.

At the Southland Conference men’s basketball tournament last night, Lamar eliminated UNO 71 to 57. Top seeded McNeese will face Lamar at 5:30 today. Nicholls defeated Texas A-and-M Commerce 72 to 52. The Colonels get Texas A-and-M Corpus Christi at 8 PM in Lake Charles.

Friday night it’s Senior Night for the 2nd ranked LSU gymnastics squad. Olivia Dunne will be recognized during senior night activities and the 21-year-old, who battled injuries last year, admits this has been her favorite year….

Good news for the thousands of people who suffer from sickle cell disease. Children’s Hospital New Orleans has been designated as Louisiana’s only treatment center for a newly approved sickle cell disease therapy. Pediatric Oncologist Doctor Zachary Leblanc says the ground breaking gene therapy takes several months and at least a couple of hospital stays…

A laundromat in St. Tammany Parish where a woman fought off an attack from a twice convicted sex offender burned down last night. No word on the cause of the blaze. Authorities say on March 3rd a woman was attacked by 40-year-old Nicholas Tranchant with a sharp weapon. The woman used that weapon to fight back and Tranchant died from his injuries.

Governor Landry opened the 2024 legislative session urging lawmakers to reform public education. Landry says it’s time to give parents more flexibility to decide where to send their students to school. He pointed out the success of two children in the audience who attend a charter school in Baton Rouge…

Early voting for the  highly contested Caddo Parish Sheriff race is sending voters to the polls in high numbers. Political analyst Scott Hughes says traditionally Democrats tend to vote early or by mail compared to Republicans who tend to cast their ballot on election day…

Hughes says the one-vote margin in the November 2023 sheriff’s election was not only historic in Louisiana, but he believes it’s the largest one-vote margin in the country with more than 40,000 votes cast.

Louisiana Agriculture Hall of Distinction added three inductees to its 2024 class. The award recognizes those who contribute to agriculture in Louisiana. Stephen Crawford of Concordia Parish was recognized for his extensive career in protecting agriculture. He aided the LSU AgCenter’s efforts of developing weed control to prevent and disrupt the growth of intrusive weeds.

Greenville, South Carolina police say Trayron Miller has been charged with disorderly conduct, assault and battery because he shoved an SEC employee in the head and stepped on her shoulders to get on the court.

Early voting for the March 23rd presidential primary is underway and while it’s already decided who will represent the Democratic and Republican Party in the presidential election, who will be the next sheriff in Caddo Parish remains undecided. The courts ordered another election in this race after Democrat Henry Whitehorn defeated Republican John Nickelson by one vote last November. Political analyst Scott Hughes says it’s not a nasty race, more of a get out and vote campaign…
