Seems like a lot of people want to take advantage of the state’s Fortify Homes program. The Department of Insurance opened the three-day registration period today for people living in the coastal areas. The department says it’s experiencing a large volume of users, and that’s making it difficult for people to apply online. The department urges you to keep trying until the deadline of five p-m Friday. Since it’s implementing a lottery system to choose 300 people, those who apply early do not have any advantage over those applying late in the application period.

Police in Lafayette make a second arrest for the double murder that took place at a barbershop during Labor Day Weekend. 19-year-old Quincy Duhon Junior and 48-year-old Johnny Trailer Junior were fatally shot. Sergeant Robin Green says detectives worked hard on this case.

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame announces its class of 2025. Chairman Doug Ireland says the headliner is football standout Andrew Whitworth, who won championships at all three levels – high school, college and pro.

And after winning the national championship with Nick Saban’s LSU squad in 2003, Whitworth went on to play in the NFL for 16 years, ending his career with a win in Super Bowl 56.

Scary moments at a recent freshman high school football game as a player for East Ascension High School suffered a medical emergency. Video footage shows the player going down after taking a hit to the chest. The game was called at that point, and the junior varsity game was also cancelled. The student is said to be alert and talking in the hospital.

A man who went on a shooting spree outside a Shreveport movie theater in 2021 is sentenced to more than a century in prison. 20-year-old Ikerryunt’a Stewart pleaded guilty to manslaughter and eight counts of attempted second-degree murder.

The Saints got back to work today as they prepare for Sunday’s game against the Eagles. Defensive End Carl Granderson says while his unit’s performance against the Cowboys last Sunday was dominant, it wasn’t perfect.

Saints Coach Dennis Allen said today that he hopes Marshon Lattimore will be able to play against the Eagles. He missed the Dallas game with a hamstring injury, but practiced on a limited basis. .

 

Freshman running back Caden Durham had a big game last Saturday as he led the Tigers with 98 yards rushing and two touchdowns. According to Pro Football Focus, 50 of his yards came after contact. But Coach Brian Kelly is not ready to name Durham as the top back…

The class of 2025 also includes two basketball All-stars — Danny Granger and Vickie Johnson. Granger  was an NBA All-Star with the Pacers in 2009 after staring at Grace King High School in New Orleans

Johnson played for Louisiana Tech and played in the WNBA for the first 13 years of the league’s existence and was a WNBA All-Star twice.

Former LSU gymnast April Burkholder, St. Thomas More boys basketball coach Danny Broussard and Delgado Baseball Coach Joe Scheurmann also make up the 2025 class.

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on hate crimes, Senator John Kennedy had some choice words for Maya Berry, the executive director of the Arab American Institute.

Kennedy ended his remarks by telling Berry to, quote, “hide your head in a bag,” which drew gasps from those in attendance.

DOTD marks one year of progress on the $127 million I-20 rehabilitation project in Bossier City. Spokeswoman Erin Buchanan says the project will ensure the interstate can handle the growing traffic demands.

The phased construction approach has allowed work to progress while minimizing disruptions.

A Louisiana Army National Guard soldier died while on a training mission. The National Guard says 32-year-old Mitchell Benham of Folsom was in Title 32 status conducting inactive duty training at Fort Johnson on Sunday when he died. The incident is under investigation.

A junior high school student in Livingston Parish is in custody for allegedly having a weapon on campus. The sheriff’s office did not specify the type of weapon the student had. No students were threatened.

The National Hurricane Center is watching for possible development of a tropical storm in the Western Caribbean over the next seven days. Right now, forecasters are giving it a low chance, but there are long range forecasts that show the possibility of a storm in the Gulf of Mexico next week. We’ll keep you updated.

 

Today marks one year since construction began on a section of I-20 in Bossier City. Department of Transportation spokesperson Erin Buchannan says once work is completed late next year, motorists will have a much better commute through one of the busiest section of interstate in north Louisiana….

LSU Alexandria saw a 33.5-percent increase in undergraduates for Fall 2024 with a total of 6,818 students.  This 1,711 jump from last year represents one of the institution’s largest increases.  Sean Richardson has more.

LSU Alexandria is experiencing a significant surge in enrollment for Fall 2024, with a remarkable 33.5% growth, bringing the total undergraduate student population to 6,818. Associate Vice Chancellor of Enrollment Shelly Gill says the surge is attributed to several factors, including enhanced recruitment efforts, expanded academic programs, and the growing popularity of online courses

Kennedy opened his remarks by confirming that Maya Berry is a longtime Democratic party activist who served on the 2016 Democratic National Convention’s Platform Standing Committee. He continued:

Lafayette Police have arrested a second 17-year-old for the double murder that took place at a barbershop on Louisiana Avenue during Labor Day Weekend. Sergeant Robin Green says Shylon Mouton and Jeffery Broussard, both of Lafayette, are facing two counts of first degree murder…

19-year-old Quincy Duhon Junior and 48-year-old Johnny Trailer Junior were fatally shot. There were four others in the barbershop when shots rang out, but only Duhon and Trailer were shot. Green says Lafayette Police detectives worked hard on this case…

Over the past year, Buchanan says crews have worked to reconstruct aging infrastructure, ensuring the interstate can handle the growing traffic demands along southeastern I-20.

The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested a student at Live Oak Junior High School today who was possessing a weapon. Deputies say a student at the school told the administration about the child having a weapon and law enforcement quickly reacted to secure the weapon and remove the student from the school immediately. Authorities say the armed student did not threaten any of the other students.

The Saints could not have gotten off to a better start, winning their first two games in dominating fashion – 47-10 over the Panthers and 44-19 over the Cowboys. Still, Coach Dennis Allen says there are flaws that the team needs to work through as the season progresses.

Saints running back Alvin Kamara has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Week. It’s the third time Kamara has received this honor in his career. Against the Cowboys, Kamara carried the ball 20 times for 115 yards, he also had 65 receiving yards and finished the day with four touchdowns. New Orleans will host Philadelphia this Sunday.

 

 

He’s known for his Woj Bombs and he produced one today. Adrian Wojnarowski announced today he’s leaving ESPN to be the general manager of the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball program.

 

One of the big surprises on LSU’s offense this year is wide receiver Aaron Anderson, who leads the team in receiving yards. The redshirt junior from New Orleans has caught 15 passes this year, three more than all of last year. Coach Brian Kelly says Anderson has grown in every aspect of his life…

Lottery registration for the Louisiana Fortify Homes grant program is now open to those living in the coastal zone. Registration is open through Friday, and 300 will be chosen.

Beefed-up police presence at Covington High School due to a reported social media threat. The Covington Police Department says a juvenile has been taken into custody for questioning, and police will maintain a heavy presence at the school for the rest of the day as a precaution.
