The price at the pump has been nice lately and it looks to get even better. Governor Bobby Jindal announced today a new project with Castleton Commodities International LLC that would make a $1.2 billion capital investment to develop a new methanol manufacturing plant along the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Parish south of New Orleans. The project will create 50 new direct jobs with an annual salary of about $72,000 plus benefits. CCI anticipates beginning construction in 2016.

Parishes across the Acadiana region have some of the highest colon cancer rates in the nation according to researchers at LSU Health. The study was led by Doctor Jordan Karlitz who says colorectal cancer rates are also high in families with a Cajun ancestry, which raises the possibility of a genetic predisposition. But he says more research is needed.:

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s office says two high school students are under arrest for allegedly taking part in the beating of a man from Schriever. They say the victim reported the teens came to his house saying they were going to fight his son because his son wouldn’t give up his seat on the school bus for the suspects. The victim suffered a broken jaw, multiple facial stitches and two seizures as a result of the attack. 17-year-old Charles Norman and 18-year-old Mark Cheatham are accused.

A new leader has been chosen to oversee higher education in Louisiana. Joseph Rallo, who is a Texas Tech System administrator, has has been picked by the Board of Regents as the state’s next Higher Education Commissioner. He’ll also be a voice for Louisiana’s four-year institutions at the state legislature, something he’s confident he can handle:

Louisianians are enjoying super low prices at the pump these days and analysts say you can expect to pay even less as the year goes on. Friday the current statewide average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.09 down two cents from the night before. The study was led by Doctor Jordan Karlitz, who is also at the Tulane University of Medicine. He says their research focused on 18 parishes in the Acadiana area and colorectal cancer rates were statistically significantly higher than both Louisiana and US rates…:

Police in Eunice are looking for a woman who robbed the State Bank and Trust with a fake bomb 4:30 pm Thursday. Cops say the burglar was wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap and placed a package she claimed was a bomb on the floor and told everyone it would explode if it was moved. LSP determined the package was not a bomb and they are asking the public’s help identifying the suspect.

State officials announce Louisiana ended fiscal year 2014 with a $178.5 million dollar surplus. She says this is good news for the people of Louisiana and the next step is working with the Legislature to create a fiscally responsible plan for ways to spend the money with priorities being higher education and heath care.

Senator John McCain is traveling the state over the next few days with Republican Congressman and US Senate Candidate Bill Cassidy. The two will be attending a series of veterans rallies starting in Metairie Sunday then with stops in Covington, Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Bossier City. There is a big wild hog problem in Louisiana and it’s gotten so bad that the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s office has been called in to held. Wildlife officials say there are hogs everywhere and they will use law enforcement sharpshooters to control the nuisance wildlife. This is similar to what they’ve had to deal with in the past with nutria.

Based on filings with the Louisiana Insurance Department, health care policies purchased through the Affordable Care Act’s health exchange will see a double digit rate increase. State Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says three aspects of the Affordable Care Act have contributed to these rate hikes…:
