It appears we’ll have at least one gubernatorial debate before the November 21st runoff election. Republican David Vitter and Democrat John Bel Edwards will face off November 16th in a WVLA-TV debate televised statewide. ULM Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley says Louisiana voters deserve to hear the two candidates exchange ideas…

The debate will begin at 6PM from The Dunham School in Baton Rouge. A recent poll shows Vitter’s unfavorable rating at 52-percent. Stockley believes this has a lot to do with Senator’s negative campaign strategy. He says Vitter will have to walk a tightrope during the debate…

He says Vitter will have to find a way to expose the weaknesses of Edwards without coming across as negative. Edwards placed first in the primary with 40-percent of the vote, followed by Vitter’s 23-percent. Stockley says Edwards’ campaign strategy is working and he shouldn’t change anything…

He says during enrollment, which runs November 1st through January 31st, 2016, families that do not receive healthcare through their employers can sign up through the online Health Insurance Marketplace…:

The state department of insurance has launched a webpage with key information about open enrollment at ldi.la.gov/5things. Donelon says, historically, about 20% of people in Louisiana are uninsured. He says, under the Affordable Care Act, the tax penalty fee for not having coverage is substantially bigger in 2016 than it was in 2015…:

Donelon says if you do not elect coverage by January 31st, you will be unable to get healthcare insurance unless you qualify for a special enrollment period due to a life change such as marriage or pregnancy. He says going to out-of-network providers can be expensive…:

Rapides Parish continues to clean up after severe weather ripped through the area over the weekend. Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Lt. Tommy Carnline says a tornado touched down Saturday morning in the Elmer community that caused some damage…

He says, fortunately, no injuries were reported. Tornados also touched down near the Tangipahoa Parish town of Tickfaw and the Livingston Parish town of Albany Saturday. Carnline says clean up and repair efforts are underway…

Cleco estimates all power in the area will be restored this afternoon. Carnline encourages motorists to exercise caution on the roadways and pay special attention to roads where there is standing water…

November is National Lung Cancer Awareness month and health officials are encouraging individuals, especially older current or former smokers, to talk to their doctor about lung screening. Dr.Brad Vincent is a pulmonologist with Mary Bird Perkins – OLOL Cancer Center in Baton Rouge. He says lung cancer kills more Americans than colon, breast and prostate combined…:

Vincent says screenings can detect lung cancer even before the first symptoms appear and are set to be covered by Medicare and health insurance companies beginning next year. He says the horrible thing about lung cancer is that patients typically don’t have any symptoms early on…:

Vincent says the National Cancer Institute says lung cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer in the US, but when caught early, treatment can help patients to live longer, healthier lives. He says the earliest symptom is a simple cough that many patients dismiss, so it’s important to know your risk factors…:

Officials with the Thibodaux Police Department say a 44-year-old man was cited after he struck an officer several times and then purposely defecated on himself to avoid arrest. They say Samuel Rodrigue was likey high on drugs when the incident took place. He was issued a misdemeanor summons to appear in court on the charges.

Republican David Vitter and Democrat John Bel Edwards are scheduled to square off in a televised debate on November 16th, the Monday before the runoff. ULM Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley says Vitter’s unfovorability ratings have been going up due to his negative campaign strategy so he’ll have to walk a tightrope during the debate…

Edwards placed first in the primary with 40-percent of the vote, followed by Vitter’s 23-percent.

LSU is ranked No. 4 in this week’s AP Top 25 and USA Today’s Coaches Top 25. The Tigers received five first place votes in the AP Poll and one in the Coaches Poll. Alabama remained No. 7 in both polls, setting up a top ten matchup in Tuscaloosa on Saturday. The LSU and Alabama SEC battle is set to kickoff at 7:00 p.m.

Governor Bobby Jindal’s office says Louisiana is ranked as having the 4th best business climate in the nation by Site Selection, which is 2 spots down from the prior year. They say it is the sixth consecutive Top 10 ranking for Louisiana in the annual Site Selection report and reinforces the state’s reputation as a top location for business investment and job creation.

The Saints won a 52-49 shootout over the New York Giants yesterday on kicker Kai Forbath’s 50-yard field goal as time expired. Saints quarterback Drew Brees tied an NFL record for touchdown passes in a single game with seven and Giants QB Eli Manning threw for six TDs. Their combined 13 touchdown passes in a single game set a new NFL record. Saints head coach Sean Payton was impressed with Forbath’s game-winning kick that improved the Black & Gold to 4-4 on the season…

The Saints are on a three game winning streak and will face the 1-7 Tennessee Titans Sunday in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

The Kansas City Royals are World Series champions after defeating the New York Mets last night 7-2 in 12 innings. The Royals scored two in the ninth to send the game to extra innings and poured on five runs in the twelfth for the victory. This is Kansas City’s first world championship since 1985.

In the Southland Conference, McNeese State remains undefeated on the season after slipping past Abilene Christian 15-13. It was a rough game for the Cowboys as they turned the ball over to the Wildcats a total of five times but kicker Trent Manuel connected on all three of his field goal attempts to keep McNeese atop the Conference standings. The Pokes will host Sam Houston State Saturday.

Elsewhere in the Southland: Southeastern Louisiana was defeated by Central Arkansas 21-16 and Northwestern State defeated Nicholls 37-21.

In the Sun Belt, UL-Lafayette scored 21 second half points to rally to defeat ULM 30-24. The Warhawks led by 15 at the half but the second half was all Ragin Cajuns. Quarterback Brooks Haack led the Cajuns by passing for one touchdown and rushing for another. ULM QB Garrett Smith threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. The Warhawks are now 1-7 on the season and will travel to Troy Saturday. UL-Lafayette improves to 3-4 and will next face Georgia Southern in Statesboro.

The Lafayette Police Department says a bicyclist was killed after he was run over by a Toyota Tundra. Investigators say 53-year-old Thomas Landry of Lafayette was riding his bike on the side of the road last night when the driver of the truck says Landry fell directly into his path in the roadway and he was unable to avoid hitting him. Landry died at a local hospital.

As flu season is rapidly approaching, the Tulane University School of Medicine is working on more effective vaccines after receiving a 1.6 million dollar grant from the National Institutes of Health. Tulane immunologist Dr. Elizabeth Norton says their goal is to make a better vaccine for people regardless of the strength of their immune system..:

The New Orleans Saints have now won three in a row after defeating the New York Giants in the last 5 seconds of regulation Sunday, 52-49.

It’s reported that Republican David Vitter and Democrat John Bel Edwards will face off November 16th in a statewide televised debate from Baton Rouge. Edwards has agreed to a November 10th Louisiana Public Broadcasting debate if the senator confirms. Vitter has been criticized for attending only two of seven televised debates leading to the primary election.

Louisiana’s START College Savings Program is the 5th best plan in the country according to the Christian Science Monitor. State Treasurer John Kennedy says START is an underutilized program that allows money to grow over time without being taxed. She says they’re looking to see what about a particular person makes the flu vaccination ineffective…

Monroe Police has arrested a couple on murder charges following the death of a 4-year-old boy. Authorities say the child died at the home of his mother, 25-year-old Arnissia Ross, and stepfather, 25-year-old Billy Moore. They say doctors found evidence of a history of abuse on the young boy’s body. Ross and Moore were booked on charges of second degree murder. The police investigation is ongoing.
