2016 goes down as a rough year for Louisiana’s agriculture industry. LSU AgCenter economist Kurt Guidry says producers had to deal with two significant flood events and low commodity prices.

Guidry says making the recovery more difficult from the floods is that major crops like corn and soybeans are not going for a high price on the market. He says it’s important for producers to have good yields, because prices are not expected to rebound.

Authorities have identified the 57-year-old woman who was struck and killed by a train in DeSoto Parish on Christmas eve. Her name is Kimberly Anne Stonedale. She’s originally from New Orleans, but moved to Zwolle about a month ago. State Police say the woman walked on the tracks near a church and never looked up, even though the engineer said he sounded the horn.

Pointe Coupee Parish officials say a woman gave birth in a Wal Mart bathroom, then left the infant in a trash can. DCFS is reminding the public about Louisiana’s Safe Haven law which allows mothers to legally relinquish babies under 60 days old to designated facilities. Deputy Director Terri Ricks says the baby will pull through and that’s the positive here….:

A 14-year-old is recovering from a serious gunshot wound in Shreveport, while a 19-year-old has been booked on a charge of illegal use of a weapon. The shooting happened on Christmas Eve. Police say Jarrett Thigpen originally told authorities that someone broke into the home and shot the 14-year-old, but detectives later learned that several males were playing with a hand gun when it discharged and struck the victim.

A family dispute led to the fatal shooting in Jefferson Davis Parish on Christmas Day. Lake Arthur Police say a fight over family property resulted in 41-year-old Ray Brister shooting his 41-year-old cousin, Shaft Francis, in the chest. Francis died at the scene and Brister was charged with manslaughter.

Health professionals say more people have heart attacks in December and January than at any other time of the year due to excessive alcohol, lack of exercise and food consumption. Governor John Bel Edwards says this isn’t everything victims of the devastating March and August events need, but it’s a significant milestone in Louisiana’s recovery.

The mother of the baby that was left in a Wal Mart trash can in New Roads has reportedly been located. Her name is not being released, but detectives are believed to have found the woman at a hospital in Zachary where she went after giving birth inside the bathroom at the store. According to EMS, the baby is currently in critical, but stable condition.

Governor John Bel Edwards says the HUD approval of $1.2 billion dollars in flood relief is a significant milestone in Louisiana’s recovery. He says it’s not everything victims need, but he’s grateful the guidelines were published so quickly. When Congress returns, the governor says he’ll continue to work to bring more help to those in need.

The latest information from the North American Aerospace Defense Command – better known as NORAD – shows elves are busy loading the sleigh ahead of Santa’s around-the-world journey tonight. NORAD’s Lt. Commander Paul Noel says making sure the skies are safe over North America is their mission…:
