A Baton Rouge contractor is now facing a slew of charges in multiple parishes after allegedly scamming dozens of August flood victims. Baton Rouge Police say the owner of Complete Construction, Matthew Morris, was booked on offenses including home improvement fraud, theft of assets of an aged person, and exploitation of the infirmed. Legal analyst Tim Meche says there’s a chance Morris won’t serve any jail time…:

The deal hinges on a plan by House Speaker Taylor Barras that would free up statutory dedicated funds in the future, including about $97 million next year.

Alario today issued a proclamation calling for a special election to fill the District 2 seat left open by embattled former Senator Troy Brown. The general election is slated to be held on April 29th of this year, with qualifying taking place March 15th-17th. Brown resigned amid calls for his expulsion from the Senate due to two separate physical violence convictions.

56-year-old Vickie Williams-Tillman is being called a hero for jumping on the back of a suspect who was fighting with a Baton Rouge police officer over the weekend. Officer Billy Amie says Williams-Tillman is a true hero, but her actions shouldn’t have been needed…

Authorities say the man who was attacking the officer is 28-year-old Thomas Bennett.

The parent company that owns Burger King says it’s buying Louisiana-based Popeyes for $1.8 billion dollars. Restaurant Brands has been taking over well-known fast-food chains they feel would do well expanding, and the purchase of Popeyes seems to fit that trend. The chicken chain has more than 2,600 locations globally.

One of the major issues Louisianians harp on is the condition of the state’s roads and bridges, and the severe traffic problems. DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson says they need an extra $700 million dollars and simply raising the gas tax a few pennies wouldn’t be enough. He says for every penny on the gas tax, DOTD gets about $30 million:

A 30-day ban on crabbing is in effect throughout the state, so what does this mean for Louisiana’s seafood industry? Chalin Delaune (Shal-in Duh-lawn) with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board says there’s always been a closed season, but it’s typically just for two weeks while deserted traps are removed from the waters. He hopes this longer closure will revitalize Louisianans’ love for blue crabs…:

The Baton Rouge Police Department recognized the woman who assisted one of their officers during an altercation with a criminal. 56-year-old Vickie Williams-Tillman jumped on the suspect, 28-year-old Thomas Bennett, because she knew Officer Billy Amie needed help…:
