Republican State Treasurer John Kennedy was a target for attacks in last night’s debate. Democratic Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell asked Republican Congressman Charles Boustany to respond to an ad by Kennedy in which he jokes about suicide and drinking weed killer.

Kennedy responded, saying he’d rather drink weed killer than answer that.

A state legislative committee is meeting at this hour to talk about lawsuits filed by several coastal parishes against oil and gas companies, as the parishes claim they’re polluting their land. But House Natural Resources Committee chairman Stuart Bishop says parishes like Terrebonne and Lafourche oppose the suit.

Bishop says the goal of today’s meeting is to have an open dialogue about this issue.

The Caldwell Parish Superintendent issues an apology regarding the strip search that was conducted on students at Caldwell Parish High School to find a missing $42. Superintendent John Gullatt apologized to the students involved and their families, saying the incident must be addressed. He added that teachers and administrators will receive additional training.

Flu season is just around the corner and heath officials are urging folks to go ahead and get vaccinated now. State Medical Director Dr. Frank Welch says high risk groups include elderly people, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions, but everyone should get the shot:

He adds that the nasal vaccine is not available this year.

The Jefferson Parish Council meets today, and Parish President Mike Yenni is supposed to be there. All members on the council have called for Yenni to resign since he admitted to sending improper text messages to a 17-year-old boy. Yenni has said he doesn’t plan to step down because what he did was just a stupid mistake and not illegal. Analysts expect the meeting to be awkward.

The New Orleans Saints have moved up five spots from No. 25 to No. 20 in the latest ESPN Power Rankings as they improve to 2-3 on the year after two wild finishes the past two weeks. New England is ranked No. 1 again this week, followed by Minnesota, Seattle, Dallas and Denver. The Saints travel to Kansas City to play the Chiefs on Sunday. Kansas City is ranked No. 11 after a big win over Oakland last weekend.

New Orleans coach Sean Payton surprised a 14-year-old super-fan battling a chronic illness with a contract to become a Saints player. On Good Morning America Tuesday, Payton told Jarrius Robertson that he was coming to Kansas City with the team this weekend and handling all media. Robertson is often at games and practices and has become a social media sensation.

Grambling’s climb in the national rankings continues. The Tigers’ football program moved up two spots to No. 21 in the latest FCS Top 25 Coaches Poll and moved up three spots to No. 22 in the STATS FCS Top 25.

McNeese State Head Coach Lance Guidry has left the Cowboys football program as his family grieves the loss of his brother and his grandfather, who died just two days a part. Guidry got the news Saturday afternoon just before the school’s first shutout loss since 2001. Lark Hebert will serve as acting head coach and says there’s it’s unknown if Coach Guidry will be back with the team before they play Northwestern State this Saturday.

He says despite what some people may think, getting a flu shot will not give someone the flu.

The FBI says they’ve arrested 45 people throughout the state in connection with underage human trafficking as part of Operation Cross Country X. In a release, feds say they rescued three juvenile victims who were used for prostitution. The nationwide effort saved a total of 82 minors and 239 traffickers and their associates.

A state legislative committee meets this morning to discuss on lawsuits against oil and gas companies by five coastal parishes, claiming these companies polluted and destroyed their land. House Natural Resources Chairman Stuart Bishop of Lafayette says there has been a lot of talk about these lawsuits and he wanted to have a public discussion.

The parishes filing suit are Jefferson, Plaqumines, St. Bernard, Vermilion and Cameron. But Bishop says there is also those parishes like Terrebonne and Lafourche who oppose the lawsuits and do not want to participate, so what does this mean for them?

A state law requires oil and gas companies to maintain and restore land used back to its original condition. Any money gained from a suit would go to restoring over 1,900 square feet of damaged coast. Bishop says representatives from the 20 coastal parishes affected will be present at the meeting.

Flu season is just around the corner, and the Louisiana Department of Health urges everyone to go out and get their flu shot. Dr. Frank Welch with LDH says despite what some people may think, getting a flu shot will not give someone the flu, and everyone needs to get vaccinated even if they got the shot last year.

In years past, people had an option to get protected from flu in the form of a nasal spray, rather than an injection. But Welch says the nasal vaccine is not be available this year.

The flu causes 500 deaths and nearly 3,000 hospitalizations every year in Louisiana. Welch says infants, elderly people, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions are at the greatest risk for complications from the flu. But he says it’s important for everyone to get their flu shot, even if they are not in those high risk groups.

Welch says people should stay home if they are sick, wash their hands, and cover their cough to avoid spreading the virus.

It appears the parents of students at Caldwell High were telling the truth when they claimed their children were stripped searched. Caldwell Parish Superintendent John Gullatt has issued an apology and says after reviewing the facts, they believe the search exceeded the limits of what was allowed by school board policy.

A 14-year-old who has a chronic liver disease and is waiting for a new liver has been named a honorary member of the Saints. Jarrius Robertson has become close to Head Coach Sean Payton and the players since they visited him last December at a hospital in New Orleans. Robertson is often at games and practices and has become a social media sensation. He’ll be with the team this Sunday in Kansas City.
