The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office arrests a woman accused of stealing money from her former cellmate who was mentally disabled. They say 34-year-old Tawanda Daughtry allegedly obtained power of attorney from her cellmate promising to use the legal document to pay the woman’s probation fees and living expenses — but instead she kept the $17,000. Daughtry was arrested for exploitation of persons with infirmities.

It’s an exciting day for Louisiana travelers looking to go overseas, as British Airways announces there will be non-stop flights from New Orleans to London. The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office says an arrest has been made in connection with the death of an 86-year-old man who was found dead in his own driveway Friday. They say 21-year-old Deandrew Pharagood turned himself in and is charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of Anthony Lirette. A motive has not been released at this time.

State Police say a 21-year-old man from Tickfaw died in a three vehicle crash as he attempted to flee Hammond Police trying to initiate a traffic stop. They say as Darious Ashton was trying to escape, he ran a stop sign and was hit by a car and a dump truck back to back. He was not restrained and later died at a hospital. The driver of the dump truck was not injured and the other motorist sustained minor injuries.

Governor John Bel Edwards says he has no plans to rescind his executive order that state contracts must include clauses to protect LGBT employees from discrimination in the workplace. Attorney General Jeff Landry is blocking several state deals which contain the wording, and Edwards sued — but the judge sided with Landry. Edwards said on his call in radio show he hopes to work things out with the AG, but it doesn’t seem possible.

The House Judiciary Committee held a meeting today to talk about ways to improve community relations with law enforcement. State Police Col. Mike Edmonson says they want to also address how the public responds to law enforcement. He says many young people don’t know what to do if they get pulled over.

Edmonson says they are also extending training periods to better prepare officers for the field.

At today’s meeting of the Jefferson Parish Council, members called for parish President Mike Yenni’s resignation and gave him a vote of no confidence. But the embattled politician says it is his job to move the parish forward and asks that the council let him do his job. He says he has never taken his oath to the parish or the people lightly.

A recall petition has been started to remove Yenni from office.

Caldwell Parish School Superintendent John Gulatt has apologized to the families who were involved in an appropriate search for a missing 42-dollars. The students claim they were asked to strip to their underwear. ACLU Executive Director Marjorie Esman they are still discussing how to move forward and only time will tell if they decide to take legal action, but…

The principal and a teacher have reportedly been placed on administrative leave.

Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser is coming up with new ways to combine Louisiana’s seafood with tourism promotion. He says they are getting close to releasing details about a social media program where all Louisiana residents can be an ambassador for the seafood industry.
