Experts say the third district congressional race between republicans Scott Angelle and Clay Higgins is a tight one. A taped phone conversation between Higgins and his ex-wife has been released and during the recording, Higgins talks about how if he was elected, it could help him pay the reported 100-thousand dollars he owes for child support.

People have been waiting at the Baton Rouge airport since early this morning for the president-elect’s noon arrival.

Funeral arrangements have been set for former NFL and John Curtis player Joe McKnight who was fatally shot during an apparent road rage dispute last week in Jefferson Parish. Visitation will be held at New Home Ministries in New Orleans at 9 a.m. Monday and services will follow.

Once again a reminder that tomorrow is an election day in Louisiana. The big US Senate race is on the ballot, and voters in the 3rd and 4th Districts will be choosing a new Congressman. Polls are open from 7am-8pm. A low voter turnout is expected which is why Secretary of State Tom Schedler says he’d like to see December federal elections in Louisiana go away.

There were tense moments Thursday in the murder trial of tow truck driver Cardell Hayes who is accused of killing popular former football Saints player Will Smith. Kevin O’Neal was Hayes’ passenger the night the April crash and shooting of Smith took place. When asked about Smith’s widow having to celebrate her son’s birthday without her husband, O’Neal said her husband brought on his own demise.

Despite the chilly weather, the State Fire Marshal’s Office is warning against using unconventional methods to heat your home. They say a 66-year-old Ponchatoula man was likely killed in a fire Thursday morning as he was using his kitchen gas stove as warming source.

The sequestered jury in the murder trial of former Saint Will Smith heard nearly 11 hours of more emotional testimony Thursday from five witnesses, including the longtime friend of the suspect. Kevin O’Neal was the passenger in the alleged killer’s vehicle in the April incident. He said at no time was Cardell Hayes angry or aggressive, and that they were both scared of Smith. He even suggested Smith brought on his own demise.

LSU defensive lineman Ed Alexander, linebacker Devin White and punter Josh Growden have been named to the SEC All-Freshman Team, the league announced Thursday.

Rumors have been swirling about LSU’s reported top choice for offensive coordinator. Lane Kiffin of Alabama was reportedly going to be the new head coach at Houston, but there is nothing official yet about his future according to Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban.

In the NBA, it was a hard game to watch for Pelicans fans last night as they fell to the 76ers, who snapped a 23 road game losing skid with the 99-88 win.

The non-select state football championships begin today in the Mercedes Benz Superdome. One of the more anticipated match-ups is tomorrow afternoon’s Class Four-A championship as Karr takes on Neville in a rematch of last year’s title game won by Neville. The friend of the man accused of killing retired NFL star Will Smith took the stand on the 4th day of the trial and said Cardell Hayes at no time got angry or attack anyone. Kevin O’Neal was a passenger in Hayes vehicle when the shooting occurred. The state maintains Hayes was out of control, but Hayes’ lawyers argue Smith was the aggressor.

Life expectancy has decreased in the US for the first time in more than 20 years, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. The report found that overall life expectancy dropped by one month from 2014 to 2015. Doctor Ben Springgate with LSU Health New Orleans Internal Medicine and Public Health says this may be due to an increase in heart disease.

The report found that the death rate from heart disease rose by nearly 1-percent last year. Springgate says life expectancy has increased in years past, because of medical advances. But he says health outcomes are declining because of people’s lifestyles.

Springgate says obesity leads to things like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. According to the report, male life expectancy decreased from 76.5 over the last year, while it fell from 81.3 to 81.2 for females. He says there are steps we can take to boost life expectancy.

Humphrey says things will start to warm up again early next week, getting into the 50s and 60s around the state.

The man who was in the car with Cardell Hayes on the night former-Saints player Will Smith was killed spoke today in court, saying Smith caused his own demise by attacking Hayes. Kevin O’Neal added that he and the defendant never become hostile. Though witnesses claim, Hayes shot Smith out of vengeance, unloading his weapon on the former-defensive end and his wife, Racuqel.

An Affordable Housing Expo will be held in Baton Rouge this weekend for flood victims. Mike Steele with GOHSEP says there are people at different stages of recovery, so there will be a variety of housing options on display. He says people can come see manufactured homes, trailers and pre-fab housing.

Jurors heard important testimony from Kevin O’ Neal during the Will Smith shooting trial today. O’ Neal is a long time friend of Cardell Hayes, who is charged with second-degree murder. O’Neal was in Hayes hummer during the car accident that sparked the shooting. O’Neal says at no time was Hayes the aggressor in the heated situation. O’ Neal also said that the last time he saw the former Saints player alive, his wife was trying to push him away from the dispute.

There are reports that Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin could be named the new head coach at Houston. The reports say there is a possibility an announcement could be made tonight. Kiffin is reportedly LSU’s top choice to be its offensive coordinator.

In other coaching news…Ruston Head Coach Braid Laird is reportedly leaving the Bearkats football program to become the defensive coordinator and associate head coach at Northwestern State. Laird head that same job when Bradley Dale Peveto was the head coach of the Demons.

Tomorrow night in the Mercedes Benz Superdome, it’s the Class 1A and 2A state championships. Haynesville faces undefeated Logansport in one match-up. The Golden Tornado are making their fifth straight trip to the Dome. The Two-A matchup pits Madison Prep versus Sterlington. Neither team has won a state title.
