President-elect Donald Trump was in Baton Rouge Friday afternoon to support Republican John Kennedy in the US Senate race. Mr. Trump says Kennedy has worked hard for Louisianans over the years.

Democrat Foster Campbell spent Friday meeting with reporters in Baton Rouge and then had campaign stops in Alexandria and Lake Charles.  He says his record speaks for itself.

Governor John Bel Edwards met with the president-elect before the rally in Baton Rouge and updated him on flood recovery efforts in Louisiana. He says they plan to meet again after the inauguration to discuss the issue more in detail.

With the state facing another year of budget problems, Governor John Bel Edwards says it’s time to create a tax structure that’s fair and predictable and able to pay for state services. Edwards says there’s one area of the tax code he would like to fix.

Lawmakers learned earlier this week that the state has a budget deficit that’s grown to 600-million dollars.

Governor John Bel Edwards spoke with the president-elect before the rally. Edwards says he updated Mr. Trump on Louisiana’s recovery from the historic floods of 2016. He says the president-elect will play a vital role in securing additional federal assistance. He says they also agreed to meet after the inauguration to discuss these issues in more detail.

With the state facing budget problems, Governor John Bel Edwards says it’s time for serious tax reform. Earlier this year the legislature approved $1.5 billion in tax increases to help fill a huge budget gap when Edwards walked into office. But Edwards says that wasn’t enough to prevent cuts to government services.

A recorded phone conversation between Capt. Clay Higgins and his ex-wife discussing child support he owes has been released just ahead of Saturday’s election. It looks like Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro has played his final game of the season as he’s dropped his appeal and he’ll begin serving a four-game suspension for testing positive for a performance enhancing drug. That drug was Adderall. With four games left, New Orleans has a 5-7 record heading into Sunday’s game against the streaking Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have won four straight.

New Orleans has also placed tight end Josh Hill on injured reserve after breaking his right fibula. And there are eight Saints players listed as qustionable for Sunday’s game, including center Max Unger and linebacker Craig Robertson.

Baton Rouge native and former Catholic High quarterback Major Applewhite is the new head coach of the Houston Cougars. Applewhite was Houston’s offensive coordinator this past season and gets the job over Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin. That means Kiffin is still available to become the next offensive coordinator at LSU.

The non-select football championships kick-off this afternoon in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Class One-A title game has Haynesville versus Logansport. Tonight’s it’s Sterlington versus Madison Prep. The 4th seeded Panthers are playing in their first title game since 2002.

Tomorrow there’s three more championship games, including the 5A title contest between West Monroe and Landry-Walker. Rebels Head Coach Jerry Arledge says they need to win the time of possession…

The University of New Orleans Survey Research Center finds Republican U.S. Senate candidate John Kennedy continues to have a huge lead over Democrat Foster Campbell in Saturday’s election. UNO Pollster Ed Chervenak says 62-percent of the 776 respondents favored Kennedy while 33-percent supported Campbell.

Since the November election, Campbell has trailed Kennedy by double digits in all the polls that have been published. Chervenak says Campbell has been hurt by the lack of strong support within the Democratic Party.

Clay Higgins and his ex-wife in which the 3rd Congressional District candidate suggested winning the election would help him pay child support. UL-Lafayette political science professor Pearson Cross says it’s clear Higgins didn’t know the phone conversation was recorded, so hard to say how this impacts the election.

Higgins reportedly owes more than $100-thousand in child support to ex-wife Rosemary Rothkamm-Hambrice. Cross says Higgins’ personal issues that have been arising throughout the campaign are problems that the public can relate to.

At this hour, Republican Donald Trump is speaking to a crowd of about five-thousand people at an airport hangar in Baton Rouge. Trump is in Louisiana for a get out of the vote rally as he’s asking voters to support Republican John Kennedy in tomorrow’s US Senate race. Governor John Bel Edwards, who is supporting Democrat Foster Campbell in the race, had a chance to speak to Trump when he landed. The two were expected to talk about flood recovery dollars.

Major Applewhite and not Lane Kiffin is the new head coach of the Houston Cougars. There were reports yesterday that Kiffin would get the job, but that didn’t happen. Applewhite is a Baton Rouge native, who played at Catholic High and then was a star quarterback at Texas. It’s possible Kiffin could still get the head coaching job at South Florida.

Bad loss for the Pelicans last night as they fell to the 76ers 99-88. Philadelphia snapped a 23-game road losing streak with the defeat. New Orleans is now 7-16 on the season and Anthony Davis says this is the most frustrated he’s been at any point during his four-plus NBA career. He had 26 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

Today in the Mercedes Benz Superdome, it’s the Class One-A and Two-A state championship games. Haynesville faces Logansport in the Class One-A title and in the two-A championship game it’s undefeated Madison Prep versus Sterlington.

It’s the Saints and the Buccaneers this Sunday in Tampa Bay. The Bucs have won four in a row and they are tied for first place in the NFC South. But Tampa is only two and four this year at their home stadium and the Saints have won four in a row at Raymond James Stadium. Kick-off is at 3:25.
