A Vernon Parish man is believed to have shot his aunt and another man before turning the gun on himself according to authorities. Vernon Sheriff Sam Craft said it was determined that, for unknown reasons, Derrick Ross died from a self-inflicted gunshot would after he killed the victims. The investigation is ongoing.

Dr. Jay Brooks with Ochsner says the study looked into the effects of a new pill on patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. He says they tested the effects of Ibrutinib because not all patients benefit from chemotherapy, which also comes with side effects like hair loss.

Brooks says CLL is the most common type of blood and bone marrow cancer. He says the results from the nationwide study with the National Cancer Institute were promising. He says patients will now have direct access to this new drug.

Brooks says some patients benefit more from chemotherapy, while others do better with the new pill. But he says the pill, which is taken once daily, is expensive, and patients will have to take it for life.

It’s New Year’s Eve and State Fire Marshal Butch Browning is urging people to always be cautious when playing with fireworks. Browning says an average of nine people are hurt due to fireworks every season. He reminds everyone to follow a few simple rules when lighting the devices.

This weekend is going to be a wet one across Louisiana as forecasters predict up to six inches of rain to fall in South Louisiana. The National Weather service says the system will begin tonight and last into Monday with the chance of localized street flooding.

Governor John Bel Edwards has named State Rep. Jack Montoucet of Crowley as the secretary of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The governor’s office says Montoucet will take office in mid-January. Former secretary Charles Melancon stepped down after an audit showed problems with his predecessor.

At least 90 homes out of the water tested at 400 residences in the town of St. Joseph were found positive for levels of lead not safe for consumption. State Health Officer Dr. Jimmy Guidry says in many cases, it was found the lead was coming from pipes inside of the home. He says they’re offering more tests to ensure there aren’t other sources of lead in the home that kids could be exposed to.

Louisiana produces more waste in December than any other month so the state Department of Environmental Quality is urging the public to recycle. Jean Kelly with DEQ says rechargeable batteries that no longer hold a charge are recyclable. She says certain parishes have drop off sites for recycling, along with pick ups.

Governor John Bel Edwards has named Crowley State Rep. Jack Montoucet as the secretary of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The governor’s office says Montoucet will take office in mid-January. Montoucet is a business owner and alligator farmer in Acadiana. Charlie Melancon, the former secretary, stepped down on December 14th after an audit into the department showed problems under his predecessor.

An arrest has been made in a 2015 double homicide in Baton Rouge that claimed the lives of two young women. BRPD Sgt. L’Jean McKneely says 26-year-old Jonathan Robertson was incarcerated on an unrelated attempted robbery charge, and police were able to secure the weapon he had at the time of his arrest.

McKneely says Robertson faces two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of 23-year-olds Brandi Gilbert and Corrine Rayford.
