Ground was broken today on the construction of a new water system for the town of St. Joseph. State health officials have found evidence of lead in the water system. US Representative Cedric Richmond says he’s sorry for making a joke about a viral photo of President Trump aide Kellyanne Conway. Richmond said Conway looked familiar while kneeling on an Oval office couch. President of the National Organization for Women in Baton Rouge Angela Adkins says apologizing was the right thing for Richmond to do.

Adkins says Richmond does a lot of good work for women, and she believes he made a mistake. She’s glad he realized it was a mistake and is optimistic he won’t make derogatory comments in the future. But she says the Congressman’s joke says a lot about the national dialogue about women.

Adkins says to change this dialogue, women and their supporters need to speak up if someone says or does something in appropriate. She encourages people to be engaged in the conversations about women and stay informed about policies lawmakers propose in the upcoming regular session.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations is calling for a change of speakers at a police training program scheduled to begin tomorrow in Alexandria. John Guandolo is one of the presenters at a three day training even hosted by the District Attorney’s Office. CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw says Guandolo is a discredited former FBI agent who promotes anti-Muslim conspiracy theories.

McCaw says Guandolo is diverting police resources away from the real threats in local communities by portraying all Muslims as potential terrorists. He says perpetuating these kinds of stereotypes is dangerous.

Rapides Parish District Attorney Phillip Terrell says there are no plans to remove Guandolo as a speaker. He says the educational seminar is sponsored by law enforcement agencies across the country. He says terrorism is a real threat, and police need training like this to know how to handle potential attacks.

Terrell says police also hold training exercises on how to deal with biker clubs and local gangs, but that doesn’t mean they single out everyone on a Harley. He says the seminar isn’t directed at anyone but criminals.

The LSU baseball team is back in Baton Rouge after winning won one game, but losing two at the College Classic in Houston. On Friday, LSU lost to top ranked TCU and beat Baylor on Saturday and then completed the weekend with a five to four loss to Texas Tech. Coach Paul Mainieri says he’s not discouraged over the results…

Baseball America has the Ragin Cajuns ranked 15th after taking two of three from Southern Miss this past weekend. 11-and-1 Louisiana Tech is still not ranked.

At the NFL combine, former LSU safety Jamal Adams ran a 4.56 in the 40. Adams who is expected to be a top five pick, told the media covering the combine that he should be the number one pick in the NFL draft.

The Pelicans finally won a game with DeMarcus Cousins on the floor. Cousins had 26 points and 15 rebounds to help New Orleans beat the lowly Los Angeles Lakers 105-97. The Pels are at Utah tonight.

In other NBA news…former Ragin Cajuns star Shawn Long has signed a 10-day contract with the 76ers.

The Boys Basketball state tournament gets underway today in Lake Charles. 48 teams will travel to the Burton Coliseum and 12 championship games will take place on Friday and Saturday. Eric Zartler with the Lake Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau says they are ready for all those extra games….

A Muslim civil rights group wants the Rapides DA to cancel a law enforcement training seminar in Alexandria on investigating Jihadi operations in the US. They call it a misuse of taxpayer money, and aren’t happy the man offering the sessions is former FBI agent John Guandolo who they say is a known anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist. But the DA says the training is to talk about the potential of terrorism faced by the nation.

Lake Charles is once again hosting the LHSAA boy’s basketball tournament beginning today. There are 48 teams in town as opposed to the previous 28 due to the select/non-select playoff split, and Eric Zartler with the city’s CVB says they are ready for all the games. Other Louisiana cities have made rumblings about wanting to host the tournament, but Zartler says Lake Charles is staying the course..:
