State Police say a Lafayette Police Officer was shot and killed by a suspect last night at a gas station. Trooper Brooks David says someone fled on foot following the shooting, but no arrests have been announced at this time. Governor John Bel Edwards has issued a statement in response to the Lafayette cop killing in Louisiana, as well as the horrific mass shooting that took place at a country music festival last night in Las Vegas. He says Louisianians have experienced the heartbreak of horrific, calculated violence in recent years and our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones. The governor will issue an executive order lowering the Louisiana and American flags over all state public buildings effective today through Friday.

Shreveport Police say one person is dead and another injured following a shooting on I-20 east. They say officers located the driver of a vehicle, 22-year-old Kenyon Frazier, suffering multiple gunshot wounds, and he was sent to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The passenger, not yet identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe the shots came from a small, dark colored vehicle, but no other information is available at this time. Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact police.

They say the cop was responding to a call of an aggravated assault with a gun just after 10pm last night, then there were reports of shots fired. The suspect fled the scene on foot and was apprehended by Lafayette PD a short time later near the scene, according to LSP.

One of two former Marksville City Marshals accused in the death of a 6-year-old and injuring of the child’s father has pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in the incident. Norris Greenhouse, Jr. is said to have taken a last-minute plea deal offered by the state Attorney General’s Office.

Governor John Bel Edwards is also pleased with the New Orleans Saints decision to stand for the national anthem before their game against the Miami Dolphins coming up on Sunday. Saints Quarterback Drew Brees says the team will kneel before the anthem starts, but they will stand for the song. This particular game’s anthem has international attention since the teams are playing in London at Wembley Stadium.

Authorities set up barricades near the Caddo parish courthouse to prepare for weekend rallies to preserve a confederate monument in front of the courthouse. Rally organizer Rex Dukes hopes for a big turnout, because he says parish leaders are not listening to people.

A public hearing is set for next Thursday to decide if the Confederate monument should be removed.

So far in 2017 there has been thirteen named storms including Hurricane Harvey that impacted parts of southwest Louisiana. State Climatologist Barry Keim says there is a good chance we may see a couple of more storms develop…

He says we usually see two named storms form in the month of October.  But currently a cool front has dialed down the humidity across the state.

The search for the missing LSU student turned up a body that authorities think is 21 year old Michael Nickelotte Junior. The body was discovered by hunters off of Ben Hur road, just south of the campus. Investigators do not suspect foul play at this time. DNA tests will be done for a positive ID of the remains. Michael Nickelotte Junior had last been seen on September 18th at a campus apartment complex.

A rally to support the Caddo Confederate monument in front of the parish courthouse is scheduled for today in Shreveport. Emelie Gunn has the story.

Today is the first day of early voting allowing registered voters to cast their ballots for the upcoming October 14th election. New Orleans has a race for mayor, while south Louisiana voters can vote for candidates for the Public Service Commission. Statewide ballots have three constitutional amendments listed and voters can select from candidates for State Treasurer. Voters can take advantage of early voting until October 7th.

LSU faces Troy for homecoming tonight. Troy lost their first game of the season to Boise State, but since then, the Trojans have won three games in a row. Tiger Rag Associate Editor, James Moran says Troy is not a team you can easily over look.
