Auto insurance rates are rising in Louisiana, in some cases as much as 25 percent.  Kelley Ray spoke with State Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon about what policyholders can do…

Four parishes in northwest Louisiana, Bossier, Caddo, Claiborne and Webster, are under a flash flood watch through Thursday morning.  Forecaster Brandi Hughes, with the National Weather Service in says the long range forecast looks wet for the next several days.

A bill to create a transparency tool called Louisiana Checkbook passed the House Appropriations committee, and may be considered on the house floor later this week..it allows access to detailed report about state expenses.

Louisiana Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne says the state already has the tools in place to provide some of those services without having to contract with a third party. He says the cost of the program has yet to be revealed.

Legislators are at odds over possible reforms to the business tax code. Matt Doyle has this report on the special session.

The House Ways and Means Committee is expected to vote today on a series of bills that would make changes to the state’s tax code as part of the effort to plug the billion dollar budget shortfall. Jackson Representative Kenny Havard says the current system, which provides tax breaks for businesses in certain industries, is unfair.

But Baton Rouge Representative Barry Ivey says he’s concerned that the current push to fix the fiscal cliff by taxing business will hurt the state’s economy. He says it could result in jobs heading out of state.

Ivey says the proposed changes to the business tax code will hurt the budget in the long run, as businesses chose not to expand in Louisiana.

The LSU Tigers won their fifth straight game inside the Pete Maravich Assembly center as the Bayou Bengals beat Vanderbilt 88-78. The Tigers got a huge game from freshman point guard Tremont Waters who had 28 points. Wayde Sims added 16 points, while Aaron Epps added 15. LSU shot 63% from the field. They were 15-of-20 from the field in the 2nd half.

It looks like former LSU Tiger Jarvis Landry will have another season with the Miami Dolphins. The Fins placed the franchise tag on the wide receiver from Lutcher, which means he’ll get paid 16-million dollars in 2018, unless Landry and Miami can work out a long term deal. The team is using a non-exclusive tag, so another franchise can offer a contract to Landry, but they would owe Miami two first round picks if Landry left south Florida. The 25-year-old had 112 receptions last season to lead the NFL.

Coach Paul Mainieri also announced a change in the weekend rotation for the upcoming series against Texas, as Zack Hess will pitch Friday and Caleb Gilbert will move to Saturday…

Elsewhere, Louisiana Tech scored five runs in the 2nd inning and beat winless McNeese State 5-1. Left-hander David Leal pitched seven strong innings.

ULM downed Northwestern STate 11-6. Southeastern Louisiana downed Alcorn State 7-1. And Grambling swept a doubleheader from Wiley College.

Other factors include cheap gas, which leads to more drivers on the road and the cost of auto repairs have skyrocketed with newer technology on late model cars.  Donelon says rates go up faster in Louisiana because the state’s legal climate leads to litigation a lot of times following accidents…

Donelon says State Farm Insurance accounts for 30 percent of Louisiana insured drivers are paying on average ten-percent starting this month. Donelon advises motorists to shop around if they think their rates are too high…

Teacher salaries reached the Southern regional average in 2007, but Louisiana has fallen behind, as educators receive on average 17-hundred dollars less. And with a one-billion-dollar shortfall, it’s unlikely extra money will go towards the 47-thousand public school teachers. Legislative Director for the Louisiana Federation of Teachers Cynthia Posey says the pay is leading to fewer teachers…

She hopes legislators can stabilize the budget to make more money available for teachers…

But there’s a divide in the legislature over how much to cut, compared to how much revenue should be raised to fill the budget hole. Governor Edwards has asked legislators to compromise over the next 17 days…

The House Ways and Means committee heard various bills today that would raise revenue either by increasing income taxes on higher wage earners, keeping the state sales tax above four-cents or eliminating sales tax breaks for certain businesses. LSU’s bad start to the 2018 season got worse today. Coach Paul Mainieri announced shortstop Josh Smith will miss at least a month because of a stress reaction in his vertebrae. Mainieri said Hal Hughes will play shortstop during Smith’s absence.

In Starkville, former LSU hitting coach and Tulane star Andy Cannizaro stepped down as head coach of Mississippi State. It’s unclear what led to the move, but Cannizzaro released a statement that said he had a wonderful opportunity at Mississippi State, but unfortunately he made some poor decisions. Cannizzaro added that he hopes the fans and people affected will one day forgive him.

On the baseball diamond tonight, Louisiana Tech has its home opener as they face McNeese State, who is winless on the season. Northwestern State is at ULM. Both teams are 2-1. Southeastern Louisiana takes on Alcorn State in Hammon, while UNO hosts Jackson State.

LSU hosts Vanderbilt tonight looking to improve its league record to 7-9. The Tigers have an RPI of 75 and we’ll need a few more wins to get on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament. But Tigers Coach Will Wade says his team is focused on building momentum rather than looking ahead to Selection Sunday….

Attorney General Jeff Landry and Governor John Bel Edwards agree to allow the A-G’s office to take control of the state’s lawsuit against opioid manufacturers. The suit claims these drug makers are responsible for the costly battle against the epidemic. The A-G’s Chief Deputy Bill Stiles says opioid abuse has raised the cost for the state’s Medicaid program.

A Tangipahoa Parish School Board member Mike Whitlow is facing criticism for posting a picture of a noose on Facebook. Whitlow says the post was not racially motivated, and was only inspired by an article he read that called for stiffer prison sentences for violent offenders. New data is out that shows salaries for Louisiana public school teachers is 17-hundred dollars less than the Southern Regional Average. The House Ways and Means committee looked at various bills today that would make changes to the state’s tax code in an effort to reduce a billion dollar budget gap that starts July 1st. But it was clear during today’s discussion, many Republicans oppose tax increases, especially changes to the income tax brackets.

The state attorney general’s office has taken control of the state’s lawsuit against opioid manufacturers. There was a dispute between the governor and the A-G-‘s office on who should control the suit that accuses drug companies of making the opioid epidemic worse. Chief Deputy for the Attorney General, Bill Stiles, is optimistic the suit will be successful…
