A recent independent poll shows self-funding Eddie Rispone closing in on Congressman Ralph Abraham for the GOP slot in a potential November run-off. Pinsonat says that’s what ten million dollars can buy you in politics.

Abraham has pulled in the lion’s share of state GOP endorsements but has raised only a few million dollars.

Louisiana emergency responders are in Florida and South Carolina to assist with the potential impact of Hurricane Dorian. Deputy Director of the governor’s office of homeland security and emergency preparedness, Casey Tingle, says about 200 men and women have been deployed

Over one-hundred Louisiana Urban Search and Rescue personnel and assets left Baton Rouge yesterday, bringing with them boats to conduct high water rescues. Tingle says these units are made up of firefighters from around the state…

LSU studied the weather effects of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico and found temperatures increased two degrees on average and humidity dropped five percent a month after landfall as a result of defoliation.

Satellite imagery showed Maria stripped the island of its vegetation, and LSU Coastal Sciences Professor Paul Miller says those plants usually absorb a lot of the sun’s energy, but…

Temperatures returned to normal about two months afterward when the island re-greened, but the effects may be more persistent outside of dense tropical rainforests.

Two degrees may not sound like much, but the side effects can add up. Miller says back in May the National Weather Service issued heat advisories for the Florida panhandle, which continues to recover from last year’s Hurricane Michael…

The study found the effect was not just limited to a major storm like Maria, they found similar scaled-down effects from Hurricane Irma’s passing just weeks before Maria.

Miller says they discovered another side effect of hurricane defoliation: river levels increased, and water quality dropped.

LSU Quarterback Joe Burrow was named SEC Player of the Week today. Burrow tied a school record by throwing five touchdown passes in the Tigers blowout win over Georgia Southern. Burrow was 23 of 27 for 278 yards. The 55 points by the way is the most scored by an LSU team in its season opener since 2000.

Former LSU Tiger and now Tulane starting quarterback Justin McMillan was named as the American Athletic Conference offensive player of the week as the senior accounted for three touchdowns in the Green Wave’s season opening win over F-I-U. McMillan had 250 total yards, 199 threw the air and 51 yards on the ground.

And the Louisiana Sports Writers Association gives its defensive player of the week honors to ULM linebacker Chase Day, who recorded a career-high 12 tackles in the Warhawks 31-9 victory over Grambling. Day also had his second-career interception.

A week from tonight the Saints will open the regular season against the Houston Texans. Coach Sean Payton says starting linebacker Alex Anzalone should be able to play after leaving the preseason opener with an undisclosed injury. Anzalone is entering his third season after recording 59 tackles, two sacks and three forced fumbles last season. And Payton there’s a possibiltiy the team will bring back veteran safety Chris Banjo, who was cut on Saturday. Banjo was a leader on special teams.

Southeastern Louisiana is ranked 23rd in this week’s STATS FCS Top 25 poll. The Lions upset five-time defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Jacksonville State on Thursday to break into the Top 25. Nicholls, who lost to Kansas State in its season opener, actually moved up a couple of spots to number 10. The Lions are scheduled to play at Bethune-Cookman this Saturday, while the Colonels are at Prairie View.

There is a college football game to watch tonight as 9th ranked Notre Dame is at Louisville.

Its Labor Day and the job market is getting lots of attention in the governor’s race with the Edwards administration touting full employment, but the Republican challengers say the state is the only one to have lost jobs over the last year. LSU Economist Loren Scott says the economy is not growing at a rapid pace.

Scott says the offshore oil and gas industry remains stagnant and the boom in the petro chemical industry has tapered off.

There’s also an area of low pressure in the central Gulf of Mexico that has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression as it moves towards Mexico’s coastline.

Authorities were involved in a high-speed chase on I-10 westbound that ended in Jefferson Davis Parish. Based on media reports the cops were after a murder suspect out of Franklin. Franklin Police say a female subject was found dead in the area of Scottie Street near Pine.

Saturday’s season opener for the 6th ranked LSU Tigers could not have gone any better as the Bayou Bengals were clicking from the start and easily defeated Georgia Southern 55-3. The spread offense we heard about all offseason was as good as advertised as the Tigers scored on their first five possessions. Head Coach Ed Orgeron liked what he saw.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation has received 76 million dollars from the federal government that will go towards expanding I-12 between U-S 190 and LA 59 and five bridge replacement projects around the state. DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson says this year’s allocation from the feds is slightly lower than last year and below the 100 million anticipated, but it comes after years of record levels of funding.

The LSU offense is getting high praise for its performance in the season-opening 55-3 win over Georgia Southern. But the Tigers defense played really well too, holding the Eagles triple-option offense attack to 98 total yards. Defensive End Rashard Lawrence says they were coached up well…

Many people who work are enjoying a day off today for Labor Day. Escalating trade tensions with China has some concerned about the possibility of a recession. But LSU economist doctor Loren Scott says of the forecasts he looks at, that doesn’t appear to be in the cards.

The Ascension Parish public school system has installed a lightning detection system to protect their student athletes when thunderstorms roll in. After 26-hours the Coast Guard called off the extensive search for a 26-year-old missing man late Sunday who was last seen swimming near Venice Saturday afternoon. The guard searched 216 square miles of open water around the state’s most southeastern tip, and utilized a coast guard helicopter, two coast guard boats, and a marine unit from the Plaquemine Parish Sherriff.

The Tigers face a much bigger test in week two when they visit 10th ranked Texas on Saturday. Texas smashed LA Tech 45-14 over the weekend.

The Saints’ linebackers are looking stronger as the team completes a trade with Miami that nets the Black and Gold a former defensive rookie of the year. Kiko Alonso will join New Orleans. In return, Miami will receive special teams linebacker Vince Biegel.

The Saints also secure their practice squad players. Tight end Dan Arnold, and receivers Emmanuel Butler and Lil’Jordan Humphrey headline the class, along with Derrick Kelly II, TJ Green, John Leglue, Michtel Loewen, Alize Mack, and Terrell Williams.

In other college action this weekend the Ragin Cajuns fell 38-28 to Mississippi State, ULM took down Grambling 31-9 in only the fourth ever matchup between the two, Nicholls lost 49-14 against Kansas State, and McNeese beat Southern 34-28 at a packed Cowboy stadium.
