The US Supreme Court hears opening arguments today in a 2015 case questioning the constitutionality of non-unanimous jury verdicts. Louisianans voted to require unanimous juries in felony trials last year. Loyola Law Professor Dane Ciolino says this case has the potential to have a huge impact on the nation’s legal system outside of just unanimous juries.

State Police has identified the 16-year-old bicyclist killed last night in St. Landry Parish. Trooper Thomas Gossen says Lane Leger of Opelousas was hit from behind by a Nissan Altima on the I-49 North Service Road, adding the driver of the vehicle did not see the bicyclist and is not facing any charges.

Louisianans voted to require unanimous juries in felony trials last year.The case being heard involves the non-unanimous murder conviction and life sentencing of Evangelisto Ramos in 2015. Loyola Law Professor Dane Ciolino says a favorable ruling would give inmates like Ramos a second chance.

A 26-year-old Lake Charles woman and her 3-year-old passenger are dead following a head-on crash in Oklahoma Saturday night. Authorities say Chelsey Bradshaw moved into the path of an on-coming 18 wheeler. Bradshaw was ejected from the vehicle which caught fire after coming to a rest on the shoulder of the road. Both died at the scene.

Food Stamp benefits are going up about two to four dollars a month for Louisiana recipients thanks to a national cost of living readjustment.  Department of Children and Family Services Economic Stability Director Kim Matherne says it’s part of the yearly change to the program, and how much more you’ll receive is based on your household’s size.

374-thousand early voted for Saturday’s October 12th election, so two-point-five million registered voters in Louisiana have yet to vote.
