GOP gubernatorial challenger Eddie Rispone called a recent radio ad linking him to David Duke “disgusting”, but Duke says like many Republicans, they now share many of the same policies.

The American Lung Association’s “State of Lung Cancer” 2019 report indicates Louisiana has one of the lowest five-year survival rates in the nation at 17%.  LSU pulmonary critical care professor of medicine Dr. Stephen Kantrow says the alarming stat comes at a time when there has been so much progress in the treatment and screening for the disease.

19% of cases in Louisiana are caught in an early stage when five-year survival rates are much higher, compared to 22% on the national level.  Louisiana is ranked 41 of 48.

Among the recommendations in prevention of lung cancer, Kantrow says combatting smoking is still a big part of prevention.  Across the nation, smoking rates have declined.

Kantrow adds in Louisiana, there are vulnerable populations who continue to smoke for whom there are barriers in the access to healthcare.

For longtime smokers, Kantrow recommends a CT scan screening annually.  Low-dose CT scans among those who qualify can reduce the death rate by up to 20%.

An early stage diagnosis can often be treated with surgery and has a much higher survival rate at 58%

Bogalusa is now home to the 50 bed Woodlake Addiction Recovery Center, which may be able to help over 1,000 patients a year in one of the areas hardest hit by the opioid epidemic.

Bogalusa Representative Malinda White says it’s sorely needed as Washington Parish has a ten times higher rate than the national average of babies born with addiction, because of addicted moms.

And the Parish holds the unfortunate title of having the most per capita opioid-related deaths as well.

White says the crisis hits Bogalusa particularly hard because of widespread poverty in the area, so having access right in the city is a major boon.

Plans have been finalized for the eventual removal of the collapsed Hard Rock Hotel site in New Orleans. The site’s developer 1031 Canal Development LLC say they’ve worked out a plan that involves 24 hours security, hiring of a national engineering firm, and also a plan to create a temporary access option for the historic Saenger Theater, which is right next door and has been closed since the collapse.

Springfield says Mooney was later apprehended in a nearby woodeded area…

A 24-year-old woman is in Iberia Parish jail after deputies responded to a call in reference to a shooting at a home yesterday. Witnesses identified Jessica Mooney as the suspect in the shooting of 46-year-old Kenneth Broussard of New Iberia. Broussard sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was found outside of the home. He was airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition.

The Saints are off today. They still have to be disappointed over the loss to Atlanta. Coach Sean Payton expects the Black and Gold to bounce back this Sunday against Tampa Bay, because he says there’s good leadership on the team…
