Your pets may want to dine from the table scraps this holiday, but what human food acceptable for animals? Kevin Barnhart has the details.

As you gather around the table to celebrate with a Thanksgiving Meal today, the State Fire Marshal reminds you to practice cooking safety. Jeff Palermo has more.

Your pets may be wanting to get in on some of the Thanksgiving spread, but what foods are okay for them? Louisiana SPCA spokesperson Alicia Vial says there are some foods that are okay, including the turkey.

Vial says you may want to watch out for the sugar content an animal consumes, but a small serving of cranberry sauce should be okay.

Cut 4 (10) “…any pet diet.”

Potatoes are great, but be careful of the added ingredients used to make mashed potatoes. A small serving of canned pumpkin should be okay as well.

Vial says it is important to make sure pets do not access unattended food or beverages and be on the lookout for signs of distress with your pet that might indicate it may have gotten into something it should not have.

In the south, some people opt to deep fry their turkey for Thanksgiving, but if you aren’t familiar with the practice it can be extremely dangerous and has been known to cause severe burns and house fires. State Fire Marshall Butch Browning says where you choose to place to the deep fryer is very important.

Cut 6 (10) “…to the home”

Browning says a common mistake people make when they deep fry a turkey is that it’s not thawed properly. Also, the amount of oil used in the boiler is imperative.

Cut 7 (12) “…boil over.”

If the turkey is not defrosted completely and there’s an excessive amount of grease in the fryer, Browning says the combination can be deadly.

Cut 8 (12) “…explosive fire”

Browning recommends that you always have a working fire extinguisher on hand and never use water to put out a grease fire. Also, do not allow children around when deep-frying a turkey.

With the holidays comes scammers trying to rip off unsuspecting victims.  Webroot.com cybersecurity expert David Dufour says when you are on an unsecured Wi-Fi network at a place like a coffee shop or an airport, your information is potentially available for a cybercriminal to scrap off that network.

Dufour says often scammers will send out emails that look like an authentic retailer.

Cut 10 (07) “…of the retailer.”

Dufour says any sort of incentives for savings will likely come in the form of promo codes, not clicking through links.

Scammers are also looking to shake down victims by posing as a charity.  Dufour says many of the emails and text messages will ask for peculiar donations.

Law enforcement agencies are stepping up patrols over Thanksgiving weekend in an effort from keeping the holiday from turning into a tragedy.  Louisiana Highway Safety Commission executive director Lisa Freeman stresses the importance of reducing distractions as driving alone is enough multitasking behind the wheel.

With school out, Bossier Parish Deputy School Resource Officer Dusty Crenshaw took to patrolling the streets instead of the halls this week. On Monday Crenshaw answered a call that a dog was running loose along Interstate 20. Crenshaw took the dog to a nearby vet to see if the dog was chipped but it wasn’t. He then dropped her off at Bossier City Animal Control so her rightful owner would have three days to claim her. Since he located the dog, he’s already been back to visit her and Crenshaw asked the shelter to call him first if no one claims the dog.

A Boy Scout leader, 49-year-old Randy Miller Jr. is charged with 500 counts of possession of child pornography according to Livingston parish authorities.  Legal analyst Franz Borghardt says the judge likely stacked all those counts to set an unprecedented $50 million bond.

Around 9:30 this morning, Jeff Davis Parish deputies responded to a 911 call at a home north of Lacassine, complaining of gunshots outside of the residence. Deputies and State Police arrived at the scene, finding a man who had been shot. The victim was airlifted and taken into surgery. The investigation continues.

Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Dusty Crenshaw is being commended for getting hold of a dog that was running free along a busy stretch of I-20. Crenshaw dropped the dog off at Bossier City Animal Control so her rightful owner would have three days to claim her. Since he located the dog, he’s already been back to visit her and Crenshaw asked the shelter to call him first if no one claims the dog.

Bossier City Animal Control takes in an average of 40 to 50 dogs per month.

Roads are going to be packed with travelers over the four-day weekend and law enforcement are stepping up patrols to help keep things safe. Kevin Barnhart has the story.

According to AAA air travel will see the biggest increase in volume with a nearly 5% growth as 4.5 million will take to the skies.  AAA spokesperson Don Redman says those choosing to fly out of the newly-opened terminal of New Orleans should arrive two and half hours before their flight departs.

The College Football Playoff committee will announce the four playoff teams December 8th. If the rankings do not change, LSU would play Clemson in a semifinal contest. The C-F-P selection committee has dropped LSU to number two and moved Ohio State to number one in the latest rankings. In Jackson Parish an early this morning accident has claimed the life of a Jonesboro man. State Troopers report that 40-year old Dustin Stanford was killed when his vehicle overturned off Highway 4. Stanford was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
