A State Fire Marshal’s K-9 is dead and Corporal Robert Fain from Bossier Parish is now facing charges of Malfeasance after an investigation revealed his K-9 partner died of a lack of food and water. Executive Director of the Louisiana Humane Society Jeff Dorson says it’s evidence that law enforcement animal handler need better oversight.

Governor Edwards calls for further increases in high ed spending in next year’s budget. Last year the Legislature OK’d a 47 million dollar boost, but UL System President Jim Henderson wants a 156-million-dollar boost to attract more high level teaching talent, and guarantee the solvency of TOPS.

Those cuts came while the state saw an increasing number of petrochemical projects take hold, but DEQ Secretary Chuck Brown says it hasn’t significantly hampered their capabilities.

The department also saw a 35 percent decline in staffing during that period, the fourth-highest percentage of cuts to staffing of any state during that period, but LDEQ spokesperson Greg Langley says much of the losses were not to regulatory staff.

22-year-old Michael Vaughn is arrested on allegations that he serially abused his captive girlfriend for days while driving her around Ouachita Parish. Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson Glen Springfield says the victim claimed the attacks began when she was attacked at their home with a closed fist and a baseball bat.

A Calhoun man is in the Ouachita Correctional Center accused of holding his girlfriend captive for days and beating her multiple times at various locations around the parish.  Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson Glen Springfield says witnesses called authorities when they saw 22-year-old Michael Vaughn holding the victim by the hair in just after 3AM.

Fain is also facing charges for allegedly claiming fraudulent hours and expenses related to working with the dog. Executive Director of the Louisiana Humane Society Jeff Dorson says Fain should receive a stiff sentence…

Three men are cited for transporting a deer carcass from Texas to Louisiana as part of the state’s effort to prevent the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease into local deer populations.  LDWF Deer Program Manager Johnathan Bordelon says the disease has been detected in 26 other states, including the three bordering Louisiana.

LDWF Deer Program Manager Johnathan Bordelon says three Louisiana men from the Acadiana area were recently cited for transporting parts of harvested deer from Texas.

A deputy with the State Fire Marshal’s office has been arrested for cruelty to animals. Investigators say Robert Fain’s K-9 died because the corporal from the Shreveport area failed to take proper care of the dog. A necropsy of Maily found neglectful malnourishment as a cause of death. The State Fire Marshal’s office has also learned Fain took steps to cover up incomplete investigative work on one of his fire cases.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is reminding hunters a ban is in place that prohibits the transporting of a dead carcass into Louisiana if it was killed out of state.
