Hurricane Delta is now a Category 4 storm and once again Louisiana is in the crosshairs of a major hurricane. National Weather Service New Orleans meteorologist Kevin Gilmore says before it becomes an issue for the northern Gulf Coast on Saturday, it’ll make an initial landfall in Mexico.

Gilmore says the current forecast shows the storm weakening to a Cat 2 before the projected landfall in southeast Louisiana, but the storm could still produce major impacts in the Bayou State.

Funeral services are scheduled tomorrow for former two-term Republican Governor Mike Foster, who died on Sunday at 90 from a variety age-related illnesses. Foster said in this 2010 interview he didn’t think much about politics for most of his life

LSU interim President Thomas Galligan wrote a letter to students today, asking them to get tested once a month for COVID-19. He says widespread testing allows for a better understanding of the presence of COVID-19 on campus.

The St Landy Parish Sheriff’s Office confirms an additional victim has died in Monday night’s drive-by shooting in Morrow. 20-year old Ladarious Keller died while being transported to the hospital and 29-year old Michael Thomas died at the scene. A third victim 19-year old Emmerick Simon underwent surgery and is listed in stable condition.

Both LSU and Ragin Cajun officials are monitoring Delta as U-L Lafayette is set to host Coastal Carolina at 11 AM, while the Tigers will face Missouri at 8 PM in Tiger Stadium. No decisions have been made on if the games will be played as scheduled.

Former Governor Mike Foster will be laid to rest tomorrow in his hometown of Franklin after passing away on Sunday at the age of 90. He’s credited for creating the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. L-C-T-C-S president Monty Sullivan says prior to 1998, the state had four community colleges and one technical college. That has since grown to a system of twelve.

Lawmakers sparred Monday in a House committee over legislation that would potentially strip state funding from localities and universities that cut police budgets by 10 percent or more.  Prairieville Representative Tony Bacala says the state is already one of the most crime-ridden in the nation and cutting police budgets would just exacerbate that.

The bill would require municipalities and schools to submit an annual report to the Joint Legislative Committee of the Budget detailing the status of their police budgets.

Hurricane Delta reaches major hurricane status as a category 4. The most recent update indicates Delta is moving across the western Caribbean Sea at 16mph, and continued strengthening is expected before reaching the Yucatan Peninsula and then crossing into the southern Gulf of Mexico. Delta is expected to make landfall along the US coastline late Friday early Saturday. Governor Edwards is expected to give an update at 3 pm this afternoon.

A resolution that would suspend the State Fire Marshal’s ability to enforce COVID health guidelines on businesses clears a House committee Civil Division director Angelique Freel says the Legislature has not given the Fire Marshal the authority to shut down businesses for non-compliance.

Governor Edwards has tasked the Fire Marshal with COVID code enforcement, citing his broad authority during a declared public health emergency.

In preparation for Hurricane Delta to make landfall later this week, the LHSAA gives approval for several schools to move their football games to Wednesday and LSU is monitoring the weather for Saturday’s game as well.

Keim says Delta is expected to be a major hurricane as it moves through the Gulf, but cooler waters near the Gulf coast will weaken the storm.

The Shreveport Police Department is working a triple homicide that happened last night in the Allendale neighborhood. Officers say the bodies of three men were found outside of a vacant house and the victims were shot in the head. The search is ongoing for the suspect or suspects.
