Two young boys from Ponchatoula have been found safe in Santa Rosa County, Florida after they went missing Tuesday. Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy James Travis says they were found Wednesday after an eyewitness confirmed it was their mother, 38-year-old Shawntel Heck, who had taken the boys after their father left them in his car.

Heck escaped by foot and is still being sought in Florida.

Rep. John Stefanski, chair of the House and Governmental Affairs Committee, says the timeline to approve new voting districts in the state will be delayed because the Census will not have numbers ready until the end of September. He says the pandemic is partly to blame.

Louisiana has entered Phase 3 of coronavirus restrictions, which allows restaurants to increase capacity from 50 to 75-percent. Live music is also allowed indoors, but there are a lot of rules businesses must follow before they strike up the band. The state health department is holding mass vaccination events with the one-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine. The clinics begin today at the Ernest Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, the Shrine on Airline in Metairie, the Lake Charles Civic Center and the St. Tammany Physicians Network in Madisonville. The mother has been identified as 38-year-old Shawntel Heck. Travis says the children were unharmed.

State Police is investigating a fatal police shooting that occurred in Abbeville yesterday afternoon. The episode began when a Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s deputy attempted to serve a protective order, when a suspect began shooting at officers. State Police say a deputy was shot and the suspect was fatally shot while aiming a rife at law enforcement. The wounded deputy has reportedly been released from the hospital.

Redistricting of Louisana’s Congressional districts may have to wait until next year. Brooke Thorington explains.

LSU baseball won a pair of games yesterday over two different opponents. The Tigers defeated Nicholls five to four in the first contest and they clobbered Southern 16 to one in the second game. Dylan Crews hit home runs in both games and Will Hellmers threw five shutout innings against the Jaguars.

In other action, McNeese edged U-L Lafayette four to three to drop the Cajuns record to seven and three. Cowboys Coach Justin Hill missed the game after testing positive for COVID-19.

ULM clobbered Grambling nine to one. Trace Henry and Wiley Cleland each drove in three runs. Southeastern Louisiana freshman Will Kinzeler struck out a career-high 13 as the Lions defeated Tulane six to one.

College basketball…Louisiana Tech tuned up for the conference USA Tournament by beating Our Lady of the Lake 99-66. UNO knocked off Northwestern State 92-83 and Southeastern Louisiana had a disappointing loss to Central Arkansas 88-71.

The Pelicans followed up their best win of the season by losing to Chicago last night for a second time this season as the Bulls held off New Orleans 128 to 124. Zion Williamson had 28 points but he was eight of 16 from the free-throw line…

The Saints have terminated the contracts of veteran tight ends Jared Cook and Josh Hill. Cook was set to become a free agent, while Hill had one more year left on his deal. By releasing Hill, the Saints save three-million dollars against the cap. The team has also reportedly restructured the contract of defensive tackle David Onyemata that will reportedly save the team four million dollars against the 2021 salary cap.

Rep. John Stefanski, chair of the House and Governmental Affairs Committee, which oversees redistricting says the timeline to approve new districts in the state will be pushed back after receiving word that the Census will not have numbers ready for them until the end of September.

Stefanski says in the past apportionment data from the Census is usually turned over in February. Stefanski says then traditionally a special session would be called for the fall to approve the districts.

In addition to the pandemic, Census enumerators experienced multiple hurdles collecting data in Louisiana. Stefanski says Louisiana was the last state in the country to report numbers.

As for when we should see the new allocations of districts, Stefanski says best case scenario if they receive numbers at the end of September….

Stefanski says they have a year after they receive the numbers to allocate districts but would like to have it completed by July 2022 because that’s the next congressional qualifying date.

Hewitt says one of her biggest concerns about the previous procurement process was that it was being conducted based on outdated requirements that didn’t take into account modern threats.

Harris says about 20 percent of state bars and restaurants have been lost to the pandemic with about 15 to 20 percent in danger of closing imminently.

Travis says authorities in Florida were alerted because they believed Heck, who has family in the area, was headed there. It was the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s office that found the stolen car Wednesday afternoon.

Travis says the children were found unharmed and are in protective custody. The mother has yet to be located.

Travis was asked why there was a delay in the Amer Alert when they were reported missing on Tuesday afternoon and the alert was issued Wednesday morning.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Department two boys who were taken outside of their father’s home in Ponchatoula Tuesday have been found in Florida.  8-year-old Kaesyn Heck and 4-year-old Jax Matthews are now in protective custody in Santa Rosa County. Their mother escaped on foot when authorities located the car she was driving.

Our neighbors in Texas and Mississippi are dropping their mask mandates but Louisiana is not following suit. Matt Doyle has more.

Louisiana is dead last in the 2021 Childhood Report that ranks how well states provide for and protect children during the pandemic. Senator Bill Cassidy says Louisiana does have a high rate of in-person learning but that includes hybrid models where students are in the classroom two days a week and virtual the other three.

It’s been one year since the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery was dedicated in Jennings. Cemetery director Dwayne Guidry says there are no fees to bury a veteran. He says full military honors are also available and the cemetery is held to the highest standards…

Tonight at the Smoothie King Center, the Pelicans will host the Bulls. Nearly a month ago, Chicago beat New Orleans 129-116 and Bulls All Star Zach LaVine had 46 points. He’s been averaging nearly 29 points a game.

The Saints have reportedly restructured defensive tackle David Onyemata’s contract, which will create four-point-three million dollars in cap space. Onyemata signed a three-year, 26 million dollar deal prior to the 2020 season.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says the Saints have also discussed with teams the possibility of trading defensive tackle Malcolm Brown, who is entering the final year of three-year, 15-million dollar contract. Rapoport says the Saints would ave five million dollars against the cap if they either traded or released Brown.

With Louisiana moving into phase 3, sporting events can now increase fan capacity to 50 percent. LSU says they plan to do so, once the state fire marshal’s office approves their plans.

The LSU men’s basketball team easily defeated Vanderbilt last night 83-68 at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The Tigers improved to 10-6 in the SEC and they clinched a double-bye in the SEC Tournament. Coach Will Wade has already led LSU to an SEC regular-season championship, he would also like an SEC Tournament title too…

Southeastern Louisiana also looks to complete a season series sweep of Central Arkansas when the two teams meet in Conway.

An Amber Alert was issued for the two boys after they were kidnapped and the car, they were sitting in was also taken by their biological mother. The mother escaped on foot in a wooded area in Santa Rosa County and the children are now in protective custody.

Louisiana is dead last in the 2021 Childhood Report that ranks how well states provide for and protect children during the pandemic. Senator Bill Cassidy says he hasn’t read the report in full but believes it’s weighted towards the lack of internet access for many children and…

Louisiana moved into Phase Three COVID restrictions today, but health officials warn that doesn’t mean the pandemic is over. Our neighbors in Mississippi and Texas dropped their mask mandates but State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says we won’t be doing the same.

A drug normally used to treat horses, ivermectin is making the rounds on social media as a cure for COVID. Director of Louisiana Poison Control Dr. Mark Ryan says ivermectin was at one time used in hospitals to treat patients when nothing else proved to be effective, but as physicians have found more useful drug therapies the medication has been removed as an option.
