Gas prices in Louisiana are up almost ten cents a gallon from 2.27 last week to $2.83. Don Redman with Triple-A says it’s the result of rising crude oil prices and uncertainty fueled by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s office is investigating a shooting in Mandeville that happened yesterday.  Deputies were dispatched yesterday to a residence on Jasmine Street in reference to a female being shot.  When they arrived a man fired toward deputies who tried to get him to drop his weapon, but he continued shooting, so they returned fire.  The female victim was found dead inside, the male  suspect was taken to the hospital.

Last weekend’s shootings of two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses have shaken the nation, including the legislative community, to the core. Louisiana House Speaker Phillip DeVillier says the shootings should serve as a reminder that public officials – elected or otherwise – should moderate their messaging.

A three judge panel of the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upholds a lower court’s ruling that Louisiana’s law requiring the Ten Commandments be posted in every public school classroom is unconstitutional. Loyola University New Orleans law professor Dane Ciolino says the ruling was not unexpected.

Attorney General Liz Murrill says she strongly disagrees with the panel’s ruling and will seek immediate relief from the full Fifth Circuit and, if necessary, the U.S. Supreme Court.

Summer has officially begun, and LSU public health climatologist Barry Keim says get ready for a lot of heat and humidity. Keim says the climate prediction center is forecasting a warmer and wetter summer than normal for Louisiana.

Barry Kern, the president and CEO of Kern Studios, which created Mardi Gras Mike, says they’ve been taking him all over the city all week long.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill reacted to the ruling upholding a ban on Louisiana’s law requiring the Ten Commandments be displayed in every public-school classroom by a panel at the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. She said in a statement, “We strongly disagree with the Fifth Circuit’s affirmance of an injunction preventing five Louisiana parishes from implementing HB71. We will immediately seek relief from the full Fifth Circuit and, if necessary, the U.S. Supreme Court,” Friday, upon upholding an earlier lower court’s ruling barring the state from enforcing the law, The 3-Judge Panel called the law “plainly unconstitutional”.

Last weekend’s shootings of two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses has brought the issue of lawmaker safety to the forefront.

That’s Louisiana House Speaker Phillip DeVillier who says with the legislative session over and there are currently no plans to beef up security for lawmakers.

 

Louisiana gas prices have climbed to $2.83 per gallon for regular gasoline, up from $2.74 last week, according to AAA. Spokesperson Don Redman says crude oil prices are around 75 dollars a barrel, and oil accounts for 50 to 60-percent of gas prices so you can expect to feel it at the pump.

Louisiana’s law requiring the Ten Commandments be displayed in every public-school classroom violates the U. S. Constitution says a federal appeals court Friday. The 3-Judge Panel on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an earlier lower court’s November ruling barring the state from enforcing the law. The Panel called the law “plainly unconstitutional”. Appeals would next go to the Full Fifth Circuit Court. The case is expected to end up in the U.S. Supreme Court.

Louisiana House Speaker Phillip DeVillier while the debate at the statehouse may get heated at times, he always has great respect for all of his colleagues, including those on the other side of the aisle and he spoke about lawmakers moderating their message.

It was nearly a week ago when a gunman attacked two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses at their homes, killing one couple and leaving the other couple severely injured. Louisiana House Speaker Phillip Devillier says the shootings have no place in American politics. He says he’s grateful to serve in the Louisiana legislature where civil discourse and true love for one another remain at the heart of how they do their work…
