Forecasters are monitoring a tropical disturbance just west of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, but the National Hurricane Center is giving the tropical wave a low chance of developing into a tropical depression over the next five days. It was a rough weekend for Louisiana college football teams. Only Southeastern Louisiana and Grambling pulled out victories. The Lions defeated North Alabama 49-28 as S-L-U outscored North Alabama 35 to 14 in the second half. And yesterday, after a winless spring, Grambling topped Tennessee State 16-10 in Canton, Ohio.

The Louisiana Department of Health has confirmed another Ida-related death bringing the storm’s death toll to 13. A 74-year-old man in New Orleans died as a result of the heat.

According to the Louisiana Public Service Commission, over a half a million customers are still without power.

Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser is putting out a call for volunteers or donations to assist with storm recovery efforts related to Hurricane Ida.  He’s the leader of Volunteer Louisiana.

After the President’s visit to Louisiana to tour devastation left in the path of Hurricane Ida, Senator Bill Cassidy says Biden has pledged assistance to both southeast and southwest Louisiana.

President Biden says he will include that block grant funding in his federal budget that will be voted on by Congress before the next fiscal year begins October first.

Hurricane Ida not only jolted southeast Louisiana, but its journey north has also claimed over 45 lives in the Northeast.  With national attention on the hurricane, Edwards hopes it will rally Congress to approve funding for both areas of the state.

Edwards says the state has supported southwest Louisiana as much as fiscally possible but the bulk of the funding the area desperately needs for permanent housing must be approved by Congress

The state health department reports six nursing home residents evacuated to the Tangipahoa facility have died. All of the nursing home residents came from facilities operated by Bob Dean who told a Baton Rouge TV station they did a good job of taking care of the people. Landry says there are a lot of unanswered questions

Landry says both Tangipahoa Sheriff Daniel Edwards and Independence Police Chief Frank Edwards both said an investigation was not needed. Landry says they are brothers of Governor John Bel Edwards. Governor Edwards’ administration is conducting an investigation.

Landry is also concerned his Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and the Unified Command Group were never notified of patient abuse or neglect when the governor’s office was first notified

The LSU Tigers were pushed around in a 38-27 season opening loss to the UCLA Bruins in Pasedena on Saturday night. UCLA had 470 yards of total offense as they hit on several big plays, while LSU never established a running game, rushing for just 49 yards. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s office has charged a 20-year-old New Orleans man with murder for fatally shooting a 36-year-old man at a gas station over an argument that broke out while they were waiting in line for gasoline . The deadly shooting occurred on Clearview Parkway in Metairie. Sheriff Joe Lopinto told WWL radio that nobody should lose a life over gasoline.

Entergy has provided restoration times for all of Louisiana. Lafourche Parish, Lower Jefferson Parish, St. Charles Parish, Terrebonne and much of Plaquemines Parish will not see much of their electricity return until September 29th. Entergy’s vice president of distribution operations, John Hawkins, says the damage done is enormous…

At 3:30 today, 23rd ranked U-L Lafayette will tangle with 21st ranked Texas in Austin. The Cajuns are coming off a 10-and-1 season and they bring a seven game winning streak into the Lone Star state. It’s Steve Sarkisian’s first game as head coach of Texas.

ULM and Louisiana Tech are both on the road today, taking on SEC teams. The Warhawks are at Kentucky as it’s the first game with Terry Bowden as ULM’s head coach. The Warhawks’ last win over an SEC opponent came in 2012 over at that time eighth-ranked Arkansas.

Louisiana Tech is at Mississippi State. Tech is expected to lean on its defense as they return ten starters on that side of the football.

Tulane is at second-ranked Oklahoma. McNeese hosts the defending champs in Division Two, West Florida. Despite extensive hurricane damage in Lafourche Parish, Nicholls is at Memphis. Instead of playing in Hammond, Southeastern Louisiana is at North Alabama. Southern is at Troy at 6 PM.

High school football last night, there were a pair of games that featured teams that won a state championship last December. Madison Prep came from behind to beat St. Thomas More 38-35, Acadiana edged Carencro nine to seven. In north Louisiana, Neville nipped Ruston 27 to 24, Mangham upset Oak Grove 27 to 23 and Union Parish defeated Many 42-32.

President Biden spent much of the afternoon seeing first-hand the damage wrought by powerful Hurricane Ida.  He toured areas of southeast Louisiana battered by the storm, meeting with local and state officials leading response efforts. Biden pledges that the federal government will stand with the state to rebuild.  Governor John Bel Edwards says the billions of dollar spent to shore up levees after Hurricane Katrina is an example of the state building back better.  And, Edwards says this could have been a much more expensive storm.
