Many weekends in Louisiana are a perfect opportunity for you to go out and do some of your favorite outdoor activities. This weekend, however, will not be one of them. LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says that’s because a cold front is coming across the state.

A Denham Springs representative’s plan to address the shortage of school resource officers by using military veterans advances to the full house. Kellee Dickerson told the House Education Committee using veterans as SROs has many benefits beyond simply providing security.

Dance, cheer and lacrosse could all become sanctioned high school sports in Louisiana. This is according to a House concurrent resolution by Denham Springs Republican Roger Wilder, who says bringing those activities under the authority of the LHSAA would bring greater structure and safety oversight. The resolution passed in the House Education Committee.

With communities facing a shortage of school resource officers, one Denham Springs representative has a solution, and it’s advanced to the full House. Andrew Greenstein reports.

Former DeRidder mayor Misty Roberts’ sentencing date has been pushed back from April 17th to June ninth to give her attorneys more time to gather various transcripts for their pre-sentencing motions and to gather evidence. A month ago, Roberts was found guilty of having sex with a 16-year-old while she was the mayor.

 

There’s a good chance the state will see rain this weekend as a cold front will begin to push through the northwestern part of the state tonight and it will take until Sunday morning before the front moves through the state. LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says this cold front will certainly produce a lot of rain, it will not produce nearly enough of it to get us out of our current drought.

If you predict that LSU gymnast Kailin Chio will achieve a perfect 10 during one of her routines at an LSU gymnastics meet, you’ll probably be right. She earned two more perfect 10s last night to give her 12 for her career, eleven of them have occurred this season. Junior Konnor McClain says being able to witness what Chio is accomplishing is special…

The LSU baseball team begins a crucial three-game series in Knoxville against Tennessee this weekend. Junior outfielder Jake Brown says he enjoys playing on the road even if it means playing in hostile ballparks.

Louisiana Tech fell 7-4 to FIU last night to drop its eighth straight game. The Bulldogs will look to get back on track in Game 2 today at 5 p.m.

ULM baseball dropped a 10-7 heartbreaker to Georgia State in 13 innings in the series opener last night. The Warhawks will try to even the series today at 2 p.m.

Northwestern State baseball continues to stay hot, after securing a 17-9 win over Texas Rio Grande Valley in Game 1 of the series. Game 2 is set for tonight at 6:30 p.m.

Will Wade has made the first addition to his LSU coaching staff. Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports that former Mississippi State head coach Rick Stansbury is joining the Tigers as associate head coach. Stansbury is the all-time winningest coach in Mississippi State history, compiling a 293–166 record. He was most recently an assistant coach on Penny Hardaway’s staff at Memphis from 2022-2024.

LSU is getting ready to close out its second week of spring football practice. Last season, LSU’s rushing offense ranked 124th nationally, averaging just 104 yards per game. The offensive line also allowed 29 sacks. Sophomore running back Harlem Berry says this year’s unit has already shown tremendous improvement.

Kellee Dickerson’s bill to allow military veterans to serve as SROs passed unanimously in the House Education Committee. Dickerson says her bill is designed to improve overall public safety, not just in schools.

A Pelican Institute for Public Policy report finds electricity costs are rising quickly, and they say, costs will keep going up unless changes are made to the regulatory framework. Melissa Landry, with the Pelican Institute, says according to data from the Public Service Commission, the average utility bill in March was about ten dollars more than last year.

Landry says costs will only continue to rise unless state lawmakers or regulators step in and approve reforms that introduce cost discipline, expand access and provide options to help attract private capital.

LSU Health New Orleans unveils its plan to end cervical cancer in Louisiana by 2035. It’s called the Bayou Blueprint, and it consists of three main pillars. Dr. Donna Williams, the associate director for the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center says the first one is prevention through the HPV vaccine.

The plan aims to increase HPV vaccination rates among Louisiana girls between the ages of 13 to 17 from the current 67-percent to 80-percent by 2035.

Legislation that would keep income college athletes receive in revenue sharing agreements with public universities private is heading to the House floor. Author of the legislation Lafayette Representative Tehmi Chassion whose daughter was a college athlete, says for safety reasons, what a student makes from the university should not be made public.

The bill passed out of House Education with no one voting against it but Houma Representative Beryl Amedee concern saying a the bill was broad and expanding confidentiality may cause a loss of transparency.

Crawfish prices have held steady over the past week with Easter being this Sunday. Laney King, the co-founder of The Crawfish App, says they’re about 75 cents to a dollar more than last Easter and one reason is Easter comes earlier this year. But she says there are other factors.

A tragic crash claimed the life of a cyclist on North Baptist Road at Sun Set Acres Wednesday and the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office is looking for a driver who hit the cyclist. 46-year-old Michael Ribando Jr was struck by one vehicle whose driver stopped and reported the accident, but a second driver, traveling in the other direction, hit Ribando again, stopped briefly then took off. The vehicle described as a light-colored sedan turned right on to Wardline Rd. Anyone with information is asked to call TPSO.

The three pillars include prevention through the vaccine for HPV which is the cause of over 99% of cervical cancers. Dr. Donna Williams, the associate director for the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center says the second pillar is screening and early detection.

The Public Affairs Research Council has come out against a bill that would keep private the income college athletes receive in revenue sharing agreements with public universities because they say the revenue-sharing agreements use public money, and citizens have a right to see how public money is spent. Lafayette Representative Tehmi Chassion authored the bill that says it would protect student athletes from becoming a target. The bill passed House Education with no one voting against it, but Houma Representative Beryl Amedee expressed concern.

Three reporters, including Tiger Rag Executive Editor Todd Horne, recently filed a lawsuit against LSU arguing the revenue sharing agreements should be made public. Louisiana Radio Network and Tiger Rag are owned by the same company, Kingfish Communications.

The Tigers have not won in Knoxville since 2016. They have lost eight straight at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

In action last night, Louisiana Tech lost its eighth straight, falling to F-I–U seven to four. The Ragin Cajuns got a big road win over James Madison five to four, ULM lost in 13 innings to Georgia State 10 to 7. McNeese and UNO went 11 innings and the Cowboys won 4 to 3. Northwestern State trounced UTRGV 17 to 9 and Houston Christian blanked Nicholls three to nothing.

At LSU spring camp, one of the key returners for the Tigers is running back Harlem Berry. The 18-year-old from New Orleans rushed for 491 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman last season. There was speculation he may transfer after Frank Wilson left to be an assistant at Ole Miss, but Berry says he wanted to stay in the Purple and Gold.

A key to Lane Kiffin’s up tempo offense is running the ball. Last year, the Tigers ranked 124th in rush offense.

Kailin Chio had two perfect 10’s last night as LSU gymnastics advanced to the regional finals with a final score of 198.375. That’s the highest regional score in school history. The Tigers compete again on Saturday against Clemson, Stanford and Michigan.

LSU softball scored seven runs in the sixth inning and defeated Missouri nine to one.
