People in Beauregard Parish are still stunned after four people – three adults and a child – drowned while swimming in the Sabine River Friday. Beauregard Sheriff Mark Herford says recent rains had made the current too swift to be safe. He says a 4-year-old boy was in distress, and three men went in to try to save him, but also drowned…:

All four victims’ bodies have been recovered.

August 29th brings some bad memories for Louisiana. It’s the day that Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005…Hurricane Isaac in 2012 and Hurricane Ida in 2021. Among those hit hardest by Ida was St. John parish, where Parish President Jacklyn Hotard says recovery has been slow, due to supply chain problems and insurance red tape…:

With so many hurricane anniversaries this time of year, we are reminded to watch the tropics. Right now, four systems bear watching, but State Climatologist Barry Keim says the one in the central Atlantic COULD be an issue for the Gulf Coast…:

A student at Sam Houston High School in Lake Charles is under arrest, for allegedly making threats on social media to shoot classmates. He had also sent some texts to that effect. The 17-year-old said he’d bring a gun and carry out the deed, but didn’t specify what day. After interviewing the boy, he was placed under arrest for terrorizing. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

LSU football coach Brian Kelly has decided on a starting quarterback for Sunday’s season opener against Florida State, but he’s not announcing who it is publicly. The first-year coach says he does not want the Seminoles to have that information…

Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier have been battling for the role as the starter and Kelly said it was a close competition and he made his decision within the last 48 hours.

We are now just six days away from the season opener. Cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse transferred in from Oklahoma State and the Shreveport native says he can’t wait to wear the Purple and Gold in New Orleans….

Florida State kicked off its season on Saturday as the Seminoles easily defeated Duquense 47-7. F-S-U rushed for 406 yards.

Tomorrow is cut down day in the NFL as the Saints and every other NFL team need to get their roster down to 53 by three o’ clock tomorrow. Coach Dennis Allen believes after the cuts are made, he’ll have a very solid group…

It looks like rookie offensive tackle Trevor Penning is headed for injured reserve. Allen said today that Penning has a significant toe injury. It’s been reported Penning tore a ligament in his toe in Friday night’s preseason finale.

ULM’s Seth Hall has been named the school’s interim athletic director. The 34-year-old is a West Monroe native and is a former member of the ULM cross country and track and field teams. He’s been the university’s chief strategy officer.

Two – count ‘em – TWO kids at Carroll High School AND Carroll Junior High in Monroe were arrested today for bringing guns to school. Both have been booked into the Green Oak Detention Center on weapons charges. Police say both campuses are now safe and secured.

The four-year-old victim has been identified as Bentley Lane Fountain. The adults are Troy McCollough of the Junction community, Kelly Bailey of Hornbeck, and Austin Scott of DeRidder.

Today brings bad memories for a lot of people in Louisiana. Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, Hurricane Isaac in 2012, and Hurricane Ida last year. St John Parish was among the hardest hit by Ida. Parish President Jacklyn Hotard finally got back into her home 45 days ago. She says the recovery from Ida has been slowed by supply chain issues and insurance red tape.

She says a lot of people in St John are still in either temporary housing or living with relatives but it’s hard to track how many Her long-term concerns are about the affordability and availability of homeowners insurance.

More than half a dozen insurance companies have left Louisiana since Ida hit. Hotard says even with the challenges, St. John Parish looks much better this year than it did a year ago.

According to a GoFundMe account, the four-year-old victim has been identified as Bentley Lane Fountain. Herford says the three adults who lost their lives are Troy M. McCollough of the Junction community, Kelly Bailey of Hornbeck, and Austin Scott of DeRidder.

And with four fatalities, Herford says it’s the worst case of multiple drownings he’s worked in his more than three-decade career in Beauregard Parish.

The 2022 hurricane season was forecasted to be above average with 14 to 21 named storms, of which three to six would be major hurricanes. Keim says so far there have only been three named storms and they posed no threat to the Bayou State.

And because there’s not an immediate threat to Louisiana as far as the four systems go, Keim says you shouldn’t have to cancel any upcoming plans.

FBI agents raided Bossier City police headquarters Sunday and arrested the head of the Bossier City police union. The charge or charges against Sgt. Harold “BJ” Sanford are unknown at this time. The FBI investigation is into the Bossier City Police Local 645 of the International Union of Police.

Lafourche parish president Archie Chaisson says about 25-hundred households in Lafourche still live in temporary housing. But Chaisson says areas that looked like a war zone in Ida’s aftermath, are starting to look more normal again.

New research conducted by LSU determines that if it was not for climate change, up to 50-percent of residences in Houston’s Harris County would not have been flooded by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Lead author and LSU Sociology Professor Kevin Smiley says the climate change-fueled flooding hit low-income Hispanic neighborhoods the hardest…

Smiley says part of the reason why low-income neighborhoods flooded has to do with the historical development of Houston along its waterways and surrounding petrochemical corridor.

Former LSU Tiger and Pontchatoula star T-J Finley has been named Auburn’s starting quarterback. Finley won the job over Texas A-and-M transfer Zach Calzada.

And in College Station, former LSU Tiger Max Johnson will start the season as a back-up quarterback. Haynes King has been named the starting quarterback for the Aggies. King started the season last year for A-and-M but broke his tibia in week two and didn’t play again that season.

The Saints concluded the preseason with a 27-10 win over the Chargers on Friday. Jameis Winston returned to the field for the first time since tearing his ACL last October. Coach Dennis Allen says Winston looked sharp as he led the team down the field on a touchdown drive…

Today is the 17-year anniversary of Katrina and an HBO documentary looks back at the devastating hurricane through the eyes of children. Filmmaker Edward Buckles, who was 13 at the time says he found that others like him had never talked about it before and he hopes it’s an example going forward to recognize that children often hide and bury their trauma and if not addressed it can manifest itself later.

“Katrina Babies” is now streaming on HBO.

 

Research from LSU shows climate change had a big impact on flooding from Hurricane Harvey in Houston five years ago.  LSU sociology professor Kevin Smiley says the study points researchers to future studies to see if similar impacts could occur in other cities.

Tropical Storm Danielle has a good chance of developing later in the week in the central Atlantic, however, at this time the broad area of low pressure is not a threat to land.

The annual late summer swarms of love bugs are showing up in Louisiana. Marsanne Golsby says there’s no escape.
