A Sabine Parish couple get federal prison time for possessing and selling meth. Tryton Thomas received over 21 years and Elena Rivers got 10. Both were busted a year ago after a drug sting and a search of their home in Many.

 

Deputies in Tangipahoa Parish make an arrest in a home invasion earlier this month that left a Hammond father dead, and his 12-year-old daughter in critical condition. Officers say Omarion Hookfin is now charged with murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and kidnapping. He allegedly killed 33-year-old Donte Perry and shot Perry’s daughter five times.

Here’s a sobering statistic: 2 out of every 5 Louisianans are obese. That’s according to non-profit Trust for America’s Health. Group CEO Nadine Garcia says implementing obesity prevention programs would not only improve one’s quality of life but also reduce health costs…:

Red Flag burn warnings are posted for southeastern Louisiana due to – of all things – drought. State Fire Marshal’s spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says avoid any open burning, which can cause wildfires. She says a person died just yesterday in an out-of-control trash fire…:

The vehicle of sixth-grade teacher Michelle Reynolds who was reported missing in the Houston-area has been found in New Orleans. Sergeant Danny Lares, with the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office in Texas would not comment on the condition or location of the vehicle but says they are seeking the public’s assistance in the search for the 48-year-old mother of three…

State Fire Marshal’s Office spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says it’s best to delay any outdoor burns but if you can’t keep them at least 75 feet from any structures, wet the area around the burn pile and don’t have any flammable liquids nearby.

According to Trust for America’s Health Louisiana ranked 7th in the nation for adult obesity. President and CEO of the trust, Nadine Garcia (car-c-ah) says it’s not only adults with obesity concerns, 22-percent of Louisiana children are also considered obese. She says it’s a complex issue and has several contributing factors for example genetics, societal issues, and economics.

A ninth insurance company with thousands of policyholders in Louisiana has gone under. Fednat Insurance Corporation has been directed into insolvency by Florida regulators, because it does not have enough money to pay existing claims. Records show Fednat has 13-thousand Louisiana policyholders and 15-hundred claims open.

LSU has been recognized by the National Security Agency as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations (CAE-CO). Director of the LSU Applied Cybersecurity Lab Golden Richard (Ree-shard) says the designation is significant for the recruitment of potential computer science students and will only help graduates from the program when potential employers come calling.

A blood test is now available that can detect cancer without any symptoms. Doctor David Meyers is an internal medical physician in Metairie and he says the test has shown to be successful in detecting several highly feared cancers…

A new report released today by Trust For America’ s Health has the state’s obesity rate at 39-percent. Louisiana is one of the 19 state that has an obesity rate above 35-percent. A decade ago, no state has had a rate above 35-percent.

28 different firms – including one partly owned by Saints legend Steve Gleason – are vying for Louisiana’s 10th and last available medical cannabis pharmacy license. Speaking to state lawmakers last year, Steve Gleason, an ALS patient, says medical marijuana greatly benefited him…:
