The Louisiana Supreme Court has ruled the state’s ban on non-unanimous verdicts for violent offenses can not be used retroactively. The decision impacts about 15-hundred inmates who were convicted on a 10-2 or 11-1 decision and hoping for a new trial. Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says the U-S Supreme Court declined to make non-unanimous verdicts retroactive two years ago and the state supreme court ruled six to one against it…

A gun buyback event will be held in Jeanerette on Saturday, starting at noona t the Jeanerette King Joseph Recreational Center. Organizer Felton Hogan says they’ll pay up to 300-dollars to get a gun off the streets…

Hogan says they held a gun buy back in New Iberia in August and collected 25 guns and plan to hold one in Abbeville early next year.

Multiple people were rushed to the hospital early this morning after a shooting this morning at a fraternity house located just off the Southern University campus in Baton Rouge. BRPD’s Lt. Don Coppola says it happened around 2 AM, and the investigation is currently active…:

One student who was there tells LRN it was great party, but suddenly gunshots rang out and the crowd ran for cover. Nine victims sustained non-fatal injuries.

New Orleans Police say two juveniles were shot – one fatally – while they were burglarizing a car during the late night hours. A 15-year-old boy was killed and 14-year-old is in the hospital. Police are seeking the persons who pulled the trigger, who fled the scene.

Two men are under arrest in Lincoln Parish; accused of indecent behavior with a juvenile and possessing child porn. One of them is a visiting guest professor at Louisiana Tech. Both men awaiting bond.

A Shreveport man is suing gaming giant Caesar’s, claiming the company shortchanged customers during cashouts. Caesar’s owns Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City. Plaintiff Mike Young says this happens consistently as they “round down” slot machine cash payments, and keep the remainder. So far no official comment from Caesar’s.

Nine people were shot last night at a southern University frat house, as that school’s Homecoming Week draws to an end. Baton Rouge Police spokesman Lt. Don Coppola says officers responded to the Kappa Alpha Psi House at around 2 am…:

There’s a gun buyback program scheduled for Saturday in Jeanerette. The program is a faith-based effort to get guns off the street and help prevent further violence. Organizer Felton Hogan says the buyback will start at noon Saturday at Jeanerette’s King Joseph Recreational Center. Hogan says his group had a successful buyback in New Iberia recently as well…:

He says they’ll pay up to $300, depending on the gun. He encourages young people – who shouldn’t have dangerous weapons anyway – to take advantage…no questions asked.

 

Senator John Kennedy says he’s not afraid or reluctant to debate his Democrat challengers, he’s just too busy. He says a prior commitment made him refuse a most recent request by the Baton Rouge Advocate..:

A very hoarse Kennedy talked with 710 KEEL in Shreveport. Challengers Luke Mixon and Gary Chambers have both called Kennedy a coward for not debating them. Polls show he leads them both by a margin of over 30-percent.

After another frustrating loss last night the Saints are now 2-and-5. New Orleans Quarterback Andy Dalton threw four touchdown passes, but he was also intercepted three times as two were taken back to the end zone in the 42-34 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals. Dalton still has faith the team can turn this season around…

The Astros have a two games to none lead in their American League Championship Series after beating the Yankees 3-2 last night. Former LSU star Alex Bregman belted a three-run homer in the third inning.

LSU will host the seventh ranked Ole Miss for homecoming tomorrow at 2:30. The Tigers are 2.5 point favorites.

It’s also homecoming at Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs are coming off a 47-27 defeat to North Texas and they are looking for a better performance against 3-and-3 Rice Owls…

A Zachery man is behind bars; facing second-degree battery and hit-and-run charges after the severe beating of a 59-year-old man in Ascension Parish Sunday night…:

Police are investigating an overnight shooting at a Southern University frat house. Baton Rouge Police say nine people were shot, but their injuries are not life-threatening. The shooting comes at the end of Southern’s homecoming week and just a day before theuniversity’s homecoming game against the Virginia University of Lynchburg.

 

Is Senator John Kennedy afraid to debate his two Democrat challengers? On 710 KEEL in Shreveport, Kennedy said he has a very busy schedule and, frankly, not all debates are worth doing…:

Polling has Kennedy at well over 50-percent. Challenger Luke Mixon less than 20 and Gary Chambers less than 10.

The suspect from Sunday’s violent road rage incident in Ascension Parish is in custody. Sheriff Bobby Webre says the victim 59-year-old Scott Gray, who has stage IV cancer was severely beaten and 37-year-old Bryan Cage of Zachery turned himself in after the incident made headlines.

Cage is charged with second-degree battery and hit and run and Webre says more charges could be added and that another person was in the truck with Cage.

In Lake Charles, Judge Clayton Davis formally sentenced Kevin Daigle to death for the 2015 fatal shooting of Louisiana State Police trooper Steven Vincent. The victim’s brother and Iowa Police Chief Keith Vincent.

The Legislative Auditor’s Office says the state needs to consider higher road usage fees, Gina Brown is a Performance Audit Manager with the Legislative Auditor, she says because gas taxes go towards maintenance in 2021 the state imposed a road usage fee of $110 annually for electric vehicle owners and $60 for a hybrid but she says that’s not enough…:

37-year-old Bryan Cage of Zachary turned himself in Thursday after Sunday’s violent road rage incident put the victim in the hospital. Ascension Parish Sheriff Bobby Webre says Cage is charged with second-degree battery and hit and run which is a felony and this was not Cage’s first run-in with the law.

He says more charges could be added and that there was possibly a person in the truck with Cage.

Early voting for the November eighth election begins Tuesday and there will not be a U-S Senate debate. Republican U-S Senator John Kennedy’s challengers want one, but Kennedy says he’s busy between his work in Washington D-C and talking with voters directly around the state….

Kennedy also points out debates are often hosted by partisan groups that hope he will make some gaffe that can be exploited.

A report from the state legislative auditor’s office says as a result of more fuel efficiency vehicles and the expected increase in electric charging vehicles, the state will lose 563-million dollars in motor fuel tax revenues from 2023 to 2032. Performance Audit Manager Gina Brown says this means less funding for our roads, so state lawmakers need to consider other options to fund transportation needs…

Kevin Daigle is heading to Angola’s Death Row after he was sentenced to death in Lake Charles yesterday for the 2015 fatal shooting of Louisiana State Police Trooper Steven Vincent. Vincent encountered what he thought was a stranded motorist on a rural road, when Daigle started shot Vincent in the face. Iowa Police Chief Keith Vincent says it’s been a long seven years since his brother’s murder…

Officers arrived at the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity on Harding Boulevard around two A-M this morning. Seven individuals were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There have been no reports of any arrests.
