The Mayor may not like the moniker “Murder Capital of the USA”, but nevertheless New Orleans is on track to have the nation’s highest per-capita murder rate for 2022. The Crescent City is set to pass up the record of 70 homicides per 100-thousand people for the first time in 11 years. Experts say teaching conflict resolution as opposed to violence is key to reducing the murder rate. Meanwhile the city has seen 5 homicides since last Saturday.

A new report shows food insecurity in Louisiana is on the rise as a result of inflation and a cut in federal benefits like the child tax credit. Whitney Thomas reports..:

LSU Ag Center experts say the recent freezes were disruptive to the sugar cane industry. Sugar cane specialist Kenneth Gravois says the crops now being harvested experienced what he calls a killing freeze…:

However, ten of the eleven sugar cane mills in Louisiana are still processing cane, and 85 percent of the cane in the fields has already been harvested. Gravois adds that, despite the freeze, the quality of the sugar being processed is still very good.

Experts say tests of Shreveport wastewater show another COVID surge is likely. Dr. Krista Queen is with LSU Health in Shreveport. She says there was a similar increase of the virus in wastewater this time last year, due to holiday gathering probably…:

Police in Natchitoches arrest two people in connection with the Christmas day death of a 1-year-old child. Officers responded to a medical emergency Sunday afternoon to find the baby unresponsive. Efforts to revive the child proved unsuccessful. Police arrested the parents, 27-year-old Damian Jewett and 23-year-old Jocelyn Crenshaw, for negligent homicide, the investigation is still underway.

Recent wastewater samples from Shreveport show an increase in COVID in northwestern Louisiana. The Center for Excellence for Emerging Viral Threats at LSU Health Shreveport has been monitoring samples. Director of Viral Genomic and Surveillance Dr. Krista Queen…:

Even though the wastewater samples are from Shreveport, Queen says it’s indicative of the area in terms of community spread.

With the New Year comes a significant change in corporate taxes for Louisiana. A tax reform package passed by lawmakers in 2021 reduces the state’s corporate franchise tax; a tax paid on companies’ capital. Tax attorney and consultant Jason Decuir says this is a first step in eventually getting rid of corporate franchise taxes altogether…:

Decuir says there are also triggers calling for further reductions if Louisiana’s revenue hits certain benchmarks, which IS projected to happen.

What a night of basketball in the Bayou State last night! In front of a sold out Smoothie King Center crowd, Zion Williamson scored a career-high 43 points as the Pelicans edged Minnesota 119 to 118 for New Orleans fourth straight game. Williamson scored the final 16 points for the Pels, who are 15-and-4 on their home floor and they’ll host the 76ers on Friday night.

LSU won its SEC opener last night, upsetting Arkansas 60-57 in front of a loud PMAC crowd. Trae Hannibal had a huge game as he scored 19 points and had six rebounds. Derek Fountain had a double-double, 14 points and ten rebounds. The Bayou Bengals held the Hogs to 37-percent shooting as coach Matt McMahon is victorious in his first SEC game.

Also last night, 12th ranked Baylor beat Nicholls 85-56. Tonight, Louisiana Tech hosts U-T-S-A.

Earlier this month, receiver Kayshon Boutte announced he was returning for his senior season at LSU. Yesterday afternoon, LSU announced Boutte would not play in the Citrus Bowl, but is enrolled for the spring semester. And then last night, Boutte announced he’s entering the NFL draft and skipping his senior season.

The Saints are getting ready for this Sunday’s game against the Eagles in Philadelphia. New Orleans is not sure who they will see at quarterback. MVP candidate Jalen Hurts did not play last weekend because of a shoulder injury, so Gardner Minshew (Min-shoe) started and nearly led the Eagles to a win over Dallas. Saints Coach Dennis Allen on getting ready to face the high-flying Eagles offense…

Police in New Orleans say a man shot and killed another man yesterday afternoon in the busy French Quarter. The shooting took place at Bourbon & Toulouse Streets and was the result of an argument between two men. The victim died after being taken to the hospital. The shooter has been arrested.

Hunger Free America says food insecurity is surging in Louisiana because of inflation and the expiration of the child tax credit and free school meals. Hunger Free America CEO, Joel Berg, says more than 470-thousand Louisiana residents are living without enough food and with the cuts to federal aid, their paychecks are not enough to keep enough food on the table.

Berg says the number of people without enough food over a seven-day period spiked by 26% in Louisiana, and 30% nationwide between October 2021 and October 2022.

Queen says people in the area should practice social distancing, wear face masks, and clean their hands more often because they could be spreading COVID and not know it yet.

She says when individuals are infected the virus begins replicating in their body even before they know they are sick.

Graves says Southwest is not treating its customers properly and the federal government must act…

The Division of Administration has blocked TikTok traffic on networks managed by the state Office of Tech Services. Spokesperson for the Commissioner of Administration Jacques Berry says many state employees have the TikTok app on their personal devices, but they will no longer be able to use them if they are connected to a state network…

A company owned by Entergy has been ordered to pay about $160-million to Louisiana customers they overcharged. System Energy Resources Inc, was ordered to repay customers by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

State Police say speeding was the likely cause of a double fatal crash Tuesday near Golden Meadow, but they haven’t ruled out impairment. Trooper Ross Brennan says a man driving a pickup was going too fast, when he sideswiped a dump truck, then crashed head-on into am sedan. The sedan driver died at the scene. The pickup driver died later at a hospital. Brennan says holidays always mean increases in traffic deaths…:

The man who lit a fire inside the Walmart in Hammond on Christmas Eve has been caught. State Fire Marshal’s spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says when 43-year-old Terrence Coe saw his picture all over TV and social media, he turned himself in. She says customers aided in keeping damage to the store to a minimum…:

Another shooting on Bourbon Street, in the New Orleans French Quarter. NOPD says a man was shot and wounded today just before 2pm at Bourbon and Toulouse. He is expected to be OK. Cops are following leads and interviewing possible witnesses.

No Mega Million jackpot winner last night. That means the jackpot for Friday’s drawing will be worth about $640-million to a single winner. A lump-sum cash award would be about $302-million.

A single-vehicle crash in Terrebonne Parish claims the life of a Houma man. State Trooper Ross Brennan says 29 year old Steven English was traveling at a high rate of speed on LA- Highway 15

A toxicology sample is pending, however, Brennan says investigators believe impairment was a factor.

The Department of Transportation and Development has been awarded a $150 million Mega Grant from the federal government to go towards the I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge project. DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson says this is welcome news.

Authorities have arrested a suspect in the Christmas Eve fire at the Hammond Walmart. State Fire Marshal’s spokeswoman Ashley Rodrigue says media exposure of the man’s picture led  43-year-old Terrence Michael Coe of Hammond to call investigators

Rodrigue says Coe told investigators he set the fire as a distraction so he could shoplift.

Rodrigue says there were more than 500 customers and employees in the store at the time—but damage to the store was contained because of help from some of those customers.

Speed is the suspected cause of a double traffic fatality in Lafourche Parish Tuesday. Trooper Ross Brennan says it happened on LA Highway 1 just north of the Leesville Toll bridge in Golden Meadow. The preliminary investigation shows a Silverado driven by Archie Duet (Doo-ay) Junior was traveling at a high rate of speed, crossed the center line, and swiped a Mack Dump truck.

Brennan says Duet was transported to a local hospital where he later died and the driver of the dump truck was not injured.
