Gonzales Senator Eddie Lambert proposed a bill that would authorize public schools to have armed protection officers on campus. The bill is in response to the continuing school shooting incidents nationwide. Lambert says the bill would allow for off-duty officers to serve as school protection officers, but also would permit school faculty and staff to conceal provided they get the proper Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) certification …:

Representative Barry Ivey has filed legislation to require high school students to receive organ donation instruction in public high schools. Ivey says a constituent, who lost her daughter in a 2021 car crash, requested he file the bill.

Lambert believes young people can make the decision to become organ donors when given the option on their driver’s licenses.

New Orleans Congressman Troy Carter says there’s only one winner for NCAA Basketball championship and the champions should visit the White House solo. Carter released a statement in response to First Lady Jill Biden’s views on inviting the Iowa women’s basketball team to the White House.  Biden reversed her comment after heavy backlash.

Boyce Police arrested two brothers in the death of their elderly mother – who was under care. 66-year-old James McCoy and 56-year-old Kevin Glynn, 56, were the primary caregivers of the victim, 88-year-old Ethel Glynn who died on March 21. Assistant Chief of Police, Linwood Banks says his office was contacted by the Rapides Parish Coroner’s office on March 22 to investigate Glynn’s death.

22-year-old American Idol winner Laine Hardy has enrolled in a pretrial diversionary program through the East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s office for nonviolent offenders. Once completed Hardy will not be formally charged after being accused of hiding a recorder in his former girlfriend’s dorm room. Hardy was booked last April on one count of illegal wiretapping.

It’s National Distracted Driving Awareness month. Louisiana Highway Safety Commission Spokesperson Mark Lambert says in 2021 distracted drivers were involved in more than five-thousand accidents in which at least one person was injured or killed in Louisiana.

Northwood-Lena is the first high school to win titles on both girls’ and boys’ basketball teams in the same season. But sadly, Coach Alan Tinsley says expenses for team essentials over the season have left very little to pay for championship rings. The Rapides Parish coach is asking the community for donations.

The estimated cost of rings for 35 players and coaches is fourteen thousand dollars.

After inviting both women’s basketball teams to the White House, First Lady Jill Biden appears to be backtracking after receiving backlash on social media for inviting the Hawkeyes who lost to LSU 102-85. A statement this morning says Biden extended the extra invite because of far women have advanced in sports and that she looks forward to welcoming the Tigers. Several LSU players are not happy about Iowa’s invitation.

In Prairieville, a 13-year-old Galvez Middle School student is facing video voyeurism charges after a camera, disguised as an ink pen, was located in the girl’s locker room last week.  Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Donovan Jackson says another student found the camera and reported it.

Jackson says the suspect confessed.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness month and Louisiana distracted drivers are involved in at least 5,000 crashes a year.  But Louisiana Highway Safety Commission Spokesperson Mark Lambert believes distracted driving is underreported and drivers should consider the possible consequences before picking up their phone.

Louisiana Department of Health Secretary, Courtney Phillips has submitted her resignation from office. Phillips oversaw the department during the national health crisis – the COVID-19 pandemic. The department was under scrutiny for its processing of Medicaid payments and a failed nursing home evacuation plan after Hurricane Ida that led to multiple elderly deaths in a Tangipahoa warehouse.

Governor John Bel Edwards said the department made strides in health equity and maternal mortality under Phillip’s leadership. Phillip will be replaced by longtime Health Department Attorney Stephen Russo. Phillips’s resignation will take effect on Thursday, April 6.

Haughton Representative Dodie Horton has filed a bill to ban the discussion of sexual preference or gender identity in the classroom. HB 466 would also prohibit school employees from sharing their own orientation with kids and the use of “preferred pronouns” opposite of the gender of the child’s birth records. Horton says when a child is in the classroom education should be the focal point.

Horton’s bill will be heard in the upcoming legislative session.

Rapides Parish boys and girls high school basketball teams won the state championship but are not able to purchase rings due to insufficient funds. Northwood-Lena is the first school to win a title on both girls’ and boys’ teams in the same season. Northwood-Lena Coach Alan Tinsley says the total cost of the rings is estimated at $14,000 that was not placed in the budget.

Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Donovan Jackson says the pen cam was found by a student, who alerted school officials. Jackson says it is important for children to understand the consequences of something like this, because the boy not only faces criminal charges, but expulsion from school…:

A celebratory parade for the NCAA Champion LSU Lady Tigers will take place tomorrow evening; snaking through the LSU campus and ending at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The university says the parade will be at 6:30 p.m., and a celebration at the PMAC will get underway at 7.

Both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at Northwood High in Lena have earned state championship title rings this year, but they need help to cover the cost of getting them. Teiko Foxx has more…:

A four-day school week? LaSalle Parish School Board members have unanimously voted to move to a Tuesday through Friday school week. Under the plan each of the four days will be slightly longer for kids. In LaSalle, schools would start at 7:50 am and end at 3:35 pm.
