So far, an estimated 60,000 acres and two people have been wildfire casualties fueled in part by the triple-digit temperatures and one of the worst droughts on record.

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry agents have arrested 37-year-old Robin Crawford for starting a fire in Tickfaw. Crawford threatened to start a fire despite knowing there was a state burn ban. Firefighters were able to control the fire that was set.

Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves and Florida Representative Kathy Castor introduced bipartisan legislation that will help stop unsafe foreign-produced shrimp from reaching buyers in the U-S and taking over the market. Graves says foreign shrimp are harmful to the consumer and cannot be allowed to take over our market.

Governor Edwards, along with State Ag Commissioner Mike Strain and State Fire Marshall Dan Wallis, are reminding individuals that despite the recent rains’ the wildfires remain a threat. With Labor Day weekend upon us and football season kicking off, Wallis urged residents instead of cooking outdoors to patronize a local restaurant because firing up the grill can be potentially dangerous right now.

Strain says the state needs at least three to four inches of rain because the ground is extremely dry about a foot deep and is basically a tinderbox. And even with the statewide burn ban in effect, there have been multiple violations.

Louisiana Congressman Garret Graves has introduced bipartisan legislation to stop unsafe illegally produced shrimp from reaching U-S consumers and flooding the market. He says the bill helps level the playing field and that foreign-raised shrimp producers must play by the rules.

R-W-E Offshore U-S Gulf has won a bid to develop wind energy in federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico about 44 miles from Lake Charles. Two areas designated for wind energy development off the coast of Galveston, Texas did not receive a single bid. Helen Rose Patterson, with the National Wildlife Federation, says Louisiana has shown a greater interest in wind energy from the Gulf than Texas…

Commissioner Strain says the state needs three at least four inches of rain because the ground is extremely dry about a foot deep and is basically a tinderbox. Even with the burn ban in effect, he says the Department of Agriculture has issued more than 40 citations for violations.

State Police say a 3-year-old boy was not properly restrained when the vehicle he was traveling in slammed into a truck towing a grain trailer on LA Hwy 877 in East Carroll Parish yesterday.

Trooper Ryan Davis says three-year-old Tavorious Hopkins of Lake Providence died at a local hospital. Three others received minor to moderate injuries.

State health officials say 25 people have died as a result of heat-related illnesses since June. That’s up from the 16 deaths that were reported on August 4th. Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says heat exhaustion and heat stroke can sneak up on you very quickly…

There have been 28 heat-related deaths in Louisiana since the beginning of June. State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says there have been more than 4,700 emergency room visits for heat-related illnesses statewide.

Kanter says confusion is a sign of heat stroke and it can be fatal.

Governor John Bel Edwards says people are still intentionally or unintentionally starting fires despite the burn ban. Edwards was in the air yesterday touring the Tiger Island Fire in Beauregard Parish. The governor believes climate change will create a pattern for wildfires in the state.

RWE Offshore US Gulf LLC, a German energy firm, won the bid to develop the first wind project near Lake Charles in the Gulf of Mexico. RWE offered the highest bid of $5.6 million dollars for nearly 102 thousand acres. RWE officials say its Gulf project is expected to come online by the mid-2030s.

During the overnight hours there was an officer involved shooting in Caddo Parish. Authorities say Caddo deputies were investigating a break-in at a home on Old Mooringsport Road. Upon arrival, a suspect opened fire on deputies. The officers shot back, killing the suspect and then when they went inside the home they found a deceased female.
