The end of the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history could be in sight. Last night, there were enough votes in the U.S. Senate to break the logjam and invoke cloture on a spending bill that would fund the government until January 30th. House Speaker Mike Johnson appeared on KEEL radio in Shreveport this morning to say that the Senate is fast-forwarding the bill today.

The House has been in recess since the start of the shutdown. Johnson says he has called all House members back, and the House will take up the spending package once everyone is back in Washington.

LSU interim head football coach Frank Wilson says quarterbacks Garrett Nussmeier and Michael Van Buren will both play this Saturday against Arkansas. Even though he said both will play, Wilson never named a starter. Wilson says Nussmeier and Van Buren bring something to the table to help the team win…

Members of Congress are moving towards ending the longest federal government shutdown in U-S history. House Speaker Mike Johnson from Bossier Parish has told House members to return to Washington D-C to vote on a funding bill that that would reopen government…

However, It’s unknown if Congress will extend health care subsidies that help Americans pay for health care plans purchased through the Affordable Care Act marketplace.

LSU interim head football coach Frank Wilson says quarterbacks Garrett Nussmeier and Michael Van Buren will both play this Saturday against Arkansas. Wilson said both signal callers did some good things in the Tigers 20 to 9 loss to Alabama….

Wilson did not name a starter for Saturday’s 11:45 AM kick off against the Razorbacks. Nussmeier has started the last 23 games for the Tigers.

If you thought it was cold this morning, wait until tomorrow morning. Freeze watches and warnings are posted for Louisiana as temperatures below freezing are possible as far south as the I-10, I-12 corridor. The upper 20s are possible for northeast Louisiana. State Climatologist Jay Grymes says make sure pets have warm shelter and wear warm layers if you plan on being outside…

The Louisiana fortified roof program celebrates a significant milestone – ten-thousand fortified roofs installed. Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple says the state reached that milestone very quickly.

A fortified roof can better withstand 100-mile per hour winds thus preventing major damage to a person’s home.

LSU and Brian Kelly continue to negotiate over the amount of money the university will pay the fired coach. Kelly’s buyout is nearly 54-million dollars, but according to the Advocate, LSU offered lump-sum payments of 25-million and 30-million dollars on the day he was fired, but those offers were rejected by Kelly. Kelly’s attorneys have told LSU they expect the school to fulfill its contractual obligation, or they will pursue all available legal remedies.

Freeze watches and freeze warnings are in effect for Louisiana tonight and into tomorrow morning as low temperatures could drop into the upper 20s for some locations. State Climatologist Jay Grymes says below freezing temperatures are possible as far south as the I-10-12 corridor….

The Saints got win number two on the season yesterday as New Orleans upset Carolina 17-7. Tyler Shough became the first Saints rookie quarterback to win a start since 1981 as the 26-year-old threw for 282 yards and two touchdowns.

The Black and Gold also played complimentary football. The Saints’ defense forced two turnovers, including an interception by Alontae Taylor that led to the Saints’ second touchdown of the day that for all intents and purposes sealed the win. Taylor credits the coaching staff for putting him in a position to make the impact play.

The Saints improve to 2-and-8 on the season as they head into their bye week. Their next game is in two weeks against Atlanta in the Superdome.

Grambling won its fourth straight on Saturday, beating Bethune-Cookman 31-23, but a huge brawl erupted minutes before start of the second half. Ten players were ejected, five from each team. Grambling coach Mickey Joseph says his team was returning from the locker room to warm up for the second half when a group of Wildcats walked through the Grambling team…

The Senate last night cleared a key procedural hurdle and is on track to advance a bill that would fund the government through January 30th. House Speaker Mike Johnson says he has called all House members back, and the House will take up the spending package once everyone is back in Washington.

If you thought this morning was cold, get ready for a colder morning tomorrow. In some parts of central Louisiana, temperatures could dip below freezing overnight. LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says while you might want to cover your plants and keep your pets inside, you shouldn’t have to worry about your pipes just yet.

The cold front is forecast to move out of the state tomorrow afternoon.

Louisiana is outpacing the national average three times over when it comes to V-A benefits growth. From fiscal year 2023 to fiscal 2024, there was a six-percent increase in the number of veterans accessing critical support programs. Louisiana V-A Secretary Charlton Meginley says more than 82-thousand veterans receive more than two-billion dollars in V-A compensation.

The Insurance Information Institute says falling auto insurance rates in Florida amid legal reform legislation in that state gives hope that Louisiana drivers will see similar relief amid similar legislation passed here. Mark Friedlander is with the Insurance Information Institute:

If the start to the work week was your rude awakening weather-wise, there will be more where that came from tomorrow morning. High temperatures today won’t get out of the 50s, and LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says it’ll be a little longer before this cold snap is over.

By tomorrow afternoon, temperatures will begin their climb back up to the 70s.

There are now ten-thousand homes in Louisiana that have a fortified roof. The state’s insurance commissioner will hold a press conference today to mark that milestone. Jeff Palermo reports.

The Saints get their second win of the season, and Tyler Shough gets his first win in his NFL career. Behind a stellar defensive performance, the Saints went into Charlotte and beat the Carolina Panthers, 17-7. The news wasn’t as good for LSU; they lost to Alabama in Tuscaloosa, 20-9.

More Louisiana veterans are accessing their VA benefits especially vocational rehabilitation and employment at 25 percent more and education through the G.I. Bill at nine percent more –outpacing national averages.  Louisiana V-A Secretary Charlton Meginley says it’s a testament to the outreach of the department.

Two years ago, Florida addressed lawsuit abuse related to car crashes and the cost of auto insurance there is going down. Mark Friedlander with Insurance Information Institute says while the Florida reforms are different than those Louisiana legislators approved this year they could also provide bayou state drivers with similar relief…

High temperatures today won’t get out of the 50s, and tomorrow most of Louisiana will wake up to temperatures in the 30’s LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says by tomorrow afternoon, the cold front will move out, and temperatures will begin their climb back up to the 70s and this is a typical pattern for this time of year in Louisiana

LSU committed too many mistakes to beat the fourth-ranked team in the country and lost to Alabama 20-9 on Saturday. The Tigers were penalized ten times, lost two fumbles, and failed to score a touchdown despite four trips in the red zone. LSU fell to fourth ranked Alabama, Saturday 20-9. The defense held Bama to only 3 points in the second half, but the offense couldn’t make up a 2 touchdown first half deficit. Interim head coach Frank Wilson benched quarterback Garrett Nussmeier in the third quarter after he led the Tigers to the Alabama 8 yard line but had to settle for three.

The Saints enter their bye week on a high note after earning their second win of the season by beating the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, 17-7.  Coach Kellen Moore says this team has persevered amid adversity.

Tyler Shough completed 19 out of 27 passes for 282 yards and two TDS. Shough is the first Saints rookie QB since Dave Wilson in 1981 to win a game.

The high school football playoff pairings were released yesterday. Ruston, North DeSoto, Jena, and Haynesville are the top seeds on the non-select side. Karr, St. Charles Catholic, Lafayette Christia,n and Westminster Christian are the number one seeds on the select side.

 

The LSU Tigers dropped their third straight on Saturday, falling to Alabama 20 to 9. Fifth year senior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was benched in the third quarter, and Interim head coach Frank Wilson gave Michael Van Buren a chance…

LSU hosts Arkansas at 11:45 this Saturday. Wilson speaks again today and we’ll see if Nussmeier will remain the starter or if Van Buren gets another chance.

In other college football action on Saturday…the Ragin Cajuns, Grambling and McNeese won their games.

While Louisiana Tech, Southeastern Louisiana, Nicholls, Northwestern State and Southern lost their games.

LSU women’s basketball beat Georgia Southern 118 to 70 yesterday.
