Tomorrow is Veteran’s Day and Louisiana is outpacing the national average three times over when it comes to V-A benefits growth. From fiscal year 2023 to fiscal 2024, there was a six-percent increase in the number of veterans accessing critical support programs. Louisiana V-A Secretary Charlton Meginley.

We’re starting this week with some cold weather. Today’s high temperatures won’t get out of the 50s, and Louisiana is expecting temperatures in the 30’s tonight. LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says while you might want to cover your plants and keep your pets inside, you shouldn’t have to worry about your pipes just yet.

There are now ten thousand homes in Louisiana that have a fortified roof. The state’s insurance commissioner will hold a press conference today to mark that milestone. Jeff Palermo reports.

LSU’s defense played well against one of the top pass offenses in the country but lost to fourth-ranked Alabama 20-9 Saturday. Bama connected on two pass plays of 25 yards or more, but other than that, a blitz-heavy Tigers defense held their own. The offensive performance was again a disappointment, but Interim head coach Frank Wilson appreciated the effort…

The Saints enter their bye week on a high note after earning their second win of the season by beating the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, 17-7.  Coach Kellen Moore says this team has persevered amid adversity.

Tyler Shough completed 19 out of 27 passes for 282 yards and two TDS. Shough is the first Saints rookie QB since Dave Wilson in 1981 to win a game.

The high school football playoff pairings were released yesterday. Ruston, North DeSoto, Jena, and Haynesville are the top seeds on the non-select side. Karr, St. Charles Catholic, Lafayette Christia,n and Westminster Christian are the number one seeds on the select side.

 

The LSU Tigers dropped their third straight on Saturday, falling to Alabama 20 to 9. Fifth year senior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was benched in the third quarter, and Interim head coach Frank Wilson gave Michael Van Buren a chance…

LSU hosts Arkansas at 11:45 this Saturday. Wilson speaks again today and we’ll see if Nussmeier will remain the starter or if Van Buren gets another chance.

In other college football action on Saturday…the Ragin Cajuns, Grambling and McNeese won their games.

While Louisiana Tech, Southeastern Louisiana, Nicholls, Northwestern State and Southern lost their games.

LSU women’s basketball beat Georgia Southern 118 to 70 yesterday.

In 2023, Florida approved significant legal reform legislation regarding lawsuits involving car crashes, and two years later, the cost of auto insurance is going down. Mark Friedlander with Insurance Information Institute says Florida is a success story, and it gives hope that the legal reforms approved by Louisiana lawmakers in 2025 will provide bayou state drivers with similar relief…

From fiscal year 2023 to fiscal 2024, there was a six-percent increase in the number of veterans accessing critical support programs, tripling the national average of two-percent. Louisiana V-A Secretary Charlton Meginley says more than 82-thousand veterans receive more than two-billion dollars in V-A compensation.

Meginley says the growth in Louisiana veterans taking advantage of the G-I bill is also outpacing the national average.

Cut 8 (12) “…colleges and universities.”

The most notable areas of growth are in vocational rehabilitation and employment at 25 percent and education through the G.I. Bill at nine percent – both outpacing their respective national averages. Meginley says the growth in veterans taking advantage of the programs that the Louisiana V-A offers is a testament to the outreach of the department, letting them know that these programs are out there for their benefit.

The Saints enter their bye week on a high note, as they earned their second win of the season by beating the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, 17-7. It’s the Saints’ first road win of the season. Head Coach Kellen Moore says this season has been one of growth for the team, and the team has persevered amid adversity.

Rookie Tyler Shough completed 19 out of 27 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns in earning his first NFL win as a starting quarterback in just his second career start. After the game, Shough said it felt great to get his first career win.

Speaking of the defense, the Saints’ defense forced two turnovers, including an interception by Alontae Taylor that led to the Saints’ second touchdown of the day that for all intents and purposes sealed the win. Taylor credits the coaching staff for putting him in a position to make the impact play.

The Saints improve to 2-and-8 on the season as they head into their bye week. Their next game is in two weeks against Atlanta in the Superdome.

Grambling won its fourth straight on Saturday, beating Bethune-Cookman 31-23, but this game will be remembered for a huge brawl that erupted minutes before the second half. Ten players were ejected, five from each team. Grambling Mickey Joseph says his team was returning from the locker room to warm up for the second half when a group of Wildcats walked through the Grambling team…

Enjoy the mild weather today, because a strong cold front moves through the state tomorrow, dropping our temperatures significantly. When we wake up Monday morning, temperatures will be in the upper 30s in the northern parishes and in the 40s closer to the coast. And Chanelle Stigger, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service out of Lake Charles, says temperatures will stay cool all day long.

Stigger says several areas will see below freezing temperatures tomorrow.

According to a story in the Advocate Newspaper, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has signed an agreement with a developer for the construction of two large scale solar farms. One of the sites is in Morehouse Parish and the other is in Sabine Parish. It’s tied to the tech giant’s massive data center in Richland Parish.

Last night in high school football….Franklin Parish over Tioga 61 to 22, Evangel Christian pounded Parkway 55 to 27. Loyola Prep edged Northwood Shreveport 28 to 27, Destrehan topped Thibodaux 49 to 26 and Ruston over West Monroe 49 to 44.

More uncertainty surrounding the SNAP program as the Supreme Court issued an emergency order to block full SNAP food aid payments. Yesterday, the Louisiana Department of Health began distributing federal SNAP funds. The food stamps went to households that included the elderly and disabled and the next distribution was set to go out on Sunday. But the Trump Administration got an appeals court in Massachusetts to suspend a lower court’s ruling that said the federal government had to provide full food benefits. The Trump Administration says it has already exhausted the five-billion dollars that were in contingency reserve and can only provide partial food assistance payments for the month.

After tumultuous two weeks, the LSU football team plays Alabama tonight in Tuscaloosa. Louisiana Tech looks for its sixth win of the season at Delaware, the Ragin Cajuns host Texas State and last night Tulane scored 35 points in the first half and held on to beat 22nd ranked Memphis 38 to 32. The Green Wave are 7-2, 4-1 in the American Conference.

Last night was the final Friday night of the high school football regular season. Ruston outscored West Monroe 49 to 44 in a wild victory to claim a district championship. The Bearcats are expected to be the top seed in division one non select when the official brackets come out tomorrow. Jena will likely be the top seed in Division 3 non-select, after beating Buckeye 52-0.

Get ready for a cold start to the work week on Monday, with temperatures in the 30s in some parts of the state. Tuesday morning will be even colder, with sub-freezing temperatures likely in central Louisiana. National Weather Service Meteorologist Chanelle Stigger says if you think that weather is unusual for Louisiana, you’re absolutely right.

It may be a disappointing season for LSU football, but it’s a season that sousaphonist Kent Broussard will never forget. He’s the 66-year-old who successfully tried out for the Golden Band from Tigerland after retiring from his accounting career. Appearing on the Kelly Clarkson Show this week, Broussard said he had to be accepted just like any other applicant, then he had to submit a YouTube video just to be invited to preseason camp.

LSU is a 10.5 point underdog to Alabama on Saturday night.

The Saints are a 5.5 point underdog as they travel to Carolina to take on the Panthers, who are 5-and-4 on the season. Carolina is getting good production from former Cowboy Rico Dowdle. Dowdle had 130 yards rushing and two touchdowns last week against Green Bay. New Orleans linebacker Demario Davis on Carolina’s offense…

Cut 16 (18) “…running the football”

 

UL-Lafayette snapped a three-game losing streak by beating South Alabama, 31-22, in Mobile last week. Even though it hasn’t been the ideal season, head coach Michael Desormeaux (DEZ-er-moe) was happy for his group and wants his team to continue to play with the same determination this week.

The Cajuns are 3-and-6 on the season and they need to win their final three games to be bowl eligible.

Louisiana Tech looks for its first six-win season since 2019 when the Bulldogs visit Delaware.

Southeastern Louisiana looks to continue their push for an FCS playoff berth as the Lions visit Lamar. Also this Saturday, McNeese is at East Texas A-and-M, Nicholls visits UT Rio Grande Valley, Northwestern State hosts UIW and Grambling hosts Bethune Cookman.

After retiring as an accountant, 66-year-old Kent Broussard pursued – and fulfilled – his lifelong dream of playing in the LSU marching band. Broussard appeared on the Kelly Clarkson Show this week and said he was nearly a half-century out of practice when he hatched his plan to make the band.

The Louisiana Renaissance Festival continues in Hammond; and this weekend, fairgoers are in for a very special – and death-defying – performance from Cy the Sword Swallower. Cyrus Penn says he got the inspiration to take up sword swallowing when he needed something to do with his life upon graduating from college with a theater arts degree.

The 1-and-8 Saints are back on the road Sunday to face an improving Carolina Panthers team that just beat the Packers in Green Bay. Rookie Tyler Shough will start again at quarterback for the Saints and defensive end Cameron Jordan says the Black and Gold’s defense has to set the tone.
