Legislators are in Baton Rouge today for a special session where the main objective is to draw congressional map with two majority minority districts. Senate President Pro Tem Regina Barrow says Republicans and Democrats are offering different opinions on what the new congress district map should look like in order to have two black congressional districts.

Winter precipitation has fallen north of I-20 today. LRN Meteorologist Bill Jacquemin says south Louisiana will experience cold temperatures possible freezing rain this afternoon into tomorrow morning.

Bogalusa Police have arrested a two adults and a minor for their in connection with last week’s shooting outside a Bogalusa High Basketball game that left a 14-year-old dead and left a 13 year old hospitalized. 21 year old Jamichael Spikes has been charge with several offenses including principal to attempted second degree murder. 18 year old Caleb Moss was arrested on several charges including accessory after the fact of first degree murder. The 16 year old has been charged with first degree murder. The investigation is ongoing.

Winter weather is expected this week with the low predicted to be in the teens. Humane Society of Louisiana urge pet owners not to leave pets outside especially overnight. Director Jeff Dorson says if it’s too cold for you to be outside, its probably too cold for your furry friends.

State law requires pet owners to bring pets inside when temperatures fall below fifty degrees. This means it will be illegal to leave a pet out in the cold this week.

When it comes to larger animals like livestock, Dorson recommends putting them in stalls, sheds, or barns and give them enough food. He says its important for owners to bring pets inside when the temperature dips to freezing conditions.

Another important precaution is to keep antifreeze away from pets or where they can get to it. Dorson says antifreeze has a sweet taste that animals like, so if you spill it – clean it up.

If you see a pet left out in the cold, contact your local animal control office or police department.

Arrests have been made after a violent weekend in Louisiana. In Shreveport 70-year old Joan Johnson, and 29-year old Jasmine Johnson died after being shot in the early morning Sunday. A male victim was also shot and remains hospitalized. Shreveport police have arrested 30 year old Donald White with whom Jasmine Johnson had had a romantic relationship. White has been charged with 2 counts of 2nd degree murder, one count of attempted 2nd degree murder.

Also yesterday…Louisiana Tech men’s basketball grinded out an 80-76 overtime victory over Liberty yesterday. Isaiah Crawford had 22 points and seven blocked shots and Daniel Batcho had 21 points, while Tahlik Chavez had 19 points.

The LSU men’s basketball team suffered its SEC loss on Saturday falling to Auburn 93-78. The Tigers turned it over 17 times and shot just 42-percent from the field. Trae Hannibal came off the bench and scored 18 points in a losing effort…

The Ragin Cajuns picked up a big road win on Saturday as U-L Lafayette defeated Arkansas State 84-77. ULM is off to a 0-5 start in Sun Belt play as they fell to Texas State 67-54.

After three games in the Southland, McNeese and Lamar are tied for first place. The Cowboys defeated Southeastern Louisiana 74-65 on Saturday, while Lamar defeated Nicholls.

The Pelicans close out a five-game road trip when they visit Dallas today at 1:30. New Orleans beat the Mavs on Saturday night.

Not everyone will see winter precipitation today and tomorrow, but the entire state see below freezing temperatures., Wednesday morning will be the coldest for south Louisiana. Cameron Kowalski with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles says this storm system will also produce northerly winds of 20 to 25 miles per hour which is why there is a wind chill advisory for nearly the entire state…

Streets and lawns are covered with a thin layer of white stuff this morning in the Shreveport area. At the Shreveport Regional Airport. American and United Airlines were forced to cancel several early-morning flights. The I-20 corridor is under a winter storm warning until 6 PM.

A special session called by Governor Jeff Landry begins at 4 PM today. Lawmakers have until January 23rd to redraw congressional district boundaries. A federal judge ruled the current map with one Black district violates the Voting Rights Act, because a third of the state’s population is Black. During an appearance on the Moon Griffon Show, Landry says legislators will draw a map with a second majority Black district…

Grammy award winning Cajun recording artis- Jo-El Sonner has died at the age of 77 while on tour in Texas. The Louisiana legend had competed a show at the Llano county Opry on Saturday night before suffering a major heart attack. Sonnier began playing his brother’s accorion by the age of three, by six he had been on the radio, and by 11, he had recorded his first songs. J0-El Sonnier was known for his many hits like “No Moew One More Time” & “Come on Joe”.
