The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame has named its 2025 induction class. The headliner is Andrew Whitworth, who was a dominant offensive tackle at West Monroe and LSU and had a long career in the NFL. He’s one of three people in the class that went to LSU. NCAA champion boxer Bobby Soileau from Ville Platte and former LSU gymnastics great April Burkholder. Hall of Fame chairman Doug Ireland says Burkholder was a 14-time All-American gymnast and won the 2006 NCAA beam title…

The class also features a couple of great high school coaches. The retired Dale Weiner, who won 317 games and led Catholic High to a state football title in 2016 and St. Thomas More boys basketball coach Danny Broussard who has led the Cougars to six state titles.

 

Texas Coach Steve Sarkisan has announced that former Newman star Arch Manning will make his first start at quarterback against ULM on Saturday.

 

The Tampa Bay Rays have named former LSU and Brother Martin star Tre Morgan as their Minor League Player of the Year. Morgan hit .324 with 10 home runs and 68 RBIs this past season.

LSU’s defense showed signs it can be dominant in the 36-33 win over South Carolina. The Tigers held the Gamecocks to one total yard in the third quarter, but also gave up long touchdown runs in the second and fourth quarters. Senior defensive end Bradyn Swinson says they are close to being a good defense

The senior edge rusher is coming off a three-sack performance against South Carolina and this Saturday’s opponent, UCLA, has issues along its offensive line.

 

A prosecutor with the state attorney general’s office has provided the court with police bodycam footage from a shooting in Union Parish that led to the arrest of LSU running back Trey Holly. Two people were injured. One of them is Keisha Cornett who is seeking justice. Holly remains suspended from the football team and his next court hearing is December 18th.

 

The Saints are back at work getting ready for Sunday’s home game against Philadelphia. Quarterback Derek Carr says must put the 2-and-0 start behind them and focus on beating the Eagles…

Cornerback Marshon Lattimore was at practice yesterday after missing the Cowboys win because of a hamstring injury. But Taysom Hill did not practice yesterday because of a chest injury.

 

Three former LSU Tigers make up the 2025 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, former offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth, former gymnast April Burkholder and Bobby Soileau of Ville Platte who was an NCAA champion in boxing at LSU. Former Lady Techster All-American Vickie Johnson is also part of the class. Hall chairman Doug Ireland says Johnson also had a great pro career…

The Saints got back to work today as they prepare for Sunday’s game against the Eagles. Defensive End Carl Granderson says while his unit’s performance against the Cowboys last Sunday was dominant, it wasn’t perfect.

Saints Coach Dennis Allen said today that he hopes Marshon Lattimore will be able to play against the Eagles. He missed the Dallas game with a hamstring injury, but practiced on a limited basis. .

 

Freshman running back Caden Durham had a big game last Saturday as he led the Tigers with 98 yards rushing and two touchdowns. According to Pro Football Focus, 50 of his yards came after contact. But Coach Brian Kelly is not ready to name Durham as the top back…

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame announces its class of 2025. Chairman Doug Ireland says the headliner of the new class is football standout Andrew Whitworth, who won championships at all three levels – high school, college and pro.

And after winning the national championship with Nick Saban’s LSU squad in 2003, Whitworth went on to play in the NFL for 16 years, going out a winner.

The class of 2025 also includes two basketball All-stars — Danny Granger and Vickie Johnson. Granger  was an NBA All-Star with the Pacers in 2009 after staring at Grace King High School in New Orleans

Johnson played for Louisiana Tech and played in the WNBA for the first 13 years of the league’s existence and was a WNBA All-Star twice.

Former LSU gymnast April Burkholder, St. Thomas More boys basketball coach Danny Broussard and Delgado Baseball Coach Joe Scheurmann also make up the 2025 class.

The Saints could not have gotten off to a better start, winning their first two games in dominating fashion – 47-10 over the Panthers and 44-19 over the Cowboys. Still, Coach Dennis Allen says there are flaws that the team needs to work through as the season progresses.

Saints running back Alvin Kamara has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Week. It’s the third time Kamara has received this honor in his career. Against the Cowboys, Kamara carried the ball 20 times for 115 yards, he also had 65 receiving yards and finished the day with four touchdowns. New Orleans will host Philadelphia this Sunday.

 

 

He’s known for his Woj Bombs and he produced one today. Adrian Wojnarowski announced today he’s leaving ESPN to be the general manager of the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball program.

AJ Brown missed Monday night’s loss to Atlanta and Brown told ESPN’s Lisa Salters he expects to miss a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury.

 

Louisiana Tech hopes to see more from its running game when they host Tulsa Saturday night. The Bulldogs rushed for just 43 yards in their loss to N-C State. Marquis Crosby is dealing with an injury he suffered in the season opener and only had two carries last week. Coach Sonny Cumbie would like to get former Acadiana star Omiri Wiggins going…

In the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association high school football polls,…Ruston, who has the state’s longest winning streak is ranked number one in Class 5A, followed by Karr, Catholic High of Baton Rouge, Acadiana and then Neville, who knocked off Calvary Baptist last Friday.

Through three weeks, LSU is last in the Southeastern Conference in points per game allowed and they rank third to last in total defense, allowing 380 yards a game. But Coach Brian Kelly says he likes his linebackers, he says the defensive tackles are coming along and he believes the secondary can play at a higher level

The Tigers had nine tackles for a loss, five sacks, four forced fumbles and an interception versus South Carolina. This Saturday, LSU faces UCLA. The Bruins were held to only 238 total yards in a 42-13 loss to Indiana.

Last night in the NFL, the Falcons defeated the Eagles 22 to 21 as Atlanta quarterback Kirk Cousins threw two touchdown passes, including one with 34 seconds left. The Dirty Birds are now 1-and-1, so are the Eagles. Philadelphia will play the Saints in the Superdome this Sunday.

A big intrastate battle is set to go down on Saturday in Lafayette as the Ragin Cajuns host Tulane. U-L Lafayette Coach Michael Desormeaux says Tulane will be the toughest team they’ve faced this season…

The Cajuns are 2-and-0, while Tulane has suffered losses to Oklahoma and Kansas State after opening the season with a win over Southeastern Louisiana.

The SEC has named LSU defensive end Bradyn Swinson as the conference’s defensive player of the week. Swinson had a career-high three sacks and a forced fumble in the victory over the Gamecocks.

 

LSU started the game with three linebackers on the field for the first time this year as Whit Weeks joined Greg Penn and Harold Perkins. Perkins played strongside linebacker and had three tackles, one for a loss and a fumble recovery. Coach Brian Kelly called it progress for one of their best defensive players…

The Pelicans have a new way for fans to watch games as they are launching Gulf Coast Sports and Entertainment Network, which will be available to watch for free on over-the-air-TV stations owned by Gray Television. The NBA franchise says the new distribution agreement with Gray Media will make Pelicans games available to four-point-one million households, nearly seven million viewers throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, including the cities of Alexandria, Lake Charles, Monroe and Shreveport.  Team spokesperson Greg Bensel says in the coming weeks, the Pels will announce the create of their new streaming platform, Pelicans Plus…

LSU will host UCLA this Saturday. The Bruins were embarrassed by Indiana 42-13 in their Big Ten debut.

 

After one half of play in Raleigh, North Carolina on Saturday, it looked like Sonny Cumbie was going to get his biggest win as head coach of the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Tech led 20 to six at half, but were outscored 24 to three in the second half. Jack Turner threw a pick six early in the third quarter to start the rally.

 

McNeese rallied from ten down to beat Stephen F Austin 28 to 24 to win its Southland Opener on Saturday night in Lake Charles. Today Cowboys quarterback Clifton McDowell was named Southland Offensive Player of the Week. McDowell had two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

 

Grambling’s Andrew Jones was named SWAC Defensive Player of the week for his performance in the Tigers overtime win over Texas A-and-M Commerce. Jones leads the SWAC in tackles and had 13 tackles, two for a loss in the 35-28 win.

 

In high school football…Ruston now has the state’s longest winning streak at 16 games after Catholic High defeated St. Thomas More on Friday night.

McNeese quarterback Clifton McDowell has been named the Southland Offensive Player of the Week. McDowell led the Pokes on two fourth quarter drives to rally McNeese back from ten-point deficit to beat Stephen F Austin 28 to 24. McDowell rushed for two touchdowns and threw for two touchdowns.

 

Grambling also had a second half comeback on Saturday to beat Texas A-and-M Commerce to 35 to 28. Former LSU Tiger Tre Bradford rushed for two touchdowns, including the game winner in O-T. Grambling is 2-and-1 on the year.

 

Louisiana Tech led 17-6 at halftime over North Carolina State but the Wolfpack outscored the Bulldogs 24 to 3 to beat Tech 30 to 20. Tru Edwards had a career-high 148 receiving yards. The Bulldogs are home this Saturday against Tulsa.

 

Nicholls finally gets to play its first home game this Saturday as the Colonels host Mississippi Valley State. Nicholls lost to 11th ranked Sacramento State 34 to 7 on Saturday to start the season 0-and-3.
