But Coach Brian Kelly says he likes his linebackers, he says the defensive tackles are coming along and he believes the secondary can play at a higher level

The Tigers had nine tackles for a loss, five sacks, four forced fumbles and an interception versus South Carolina. This Saturday, LSU faces UCLA. The Bruins were held to only 238 total yards in a 42-13 loss to Indiana.

Last night in the NFL, the Falcons defeated the Eagles 22 to 21 as Atlanta quarterback Kirk Cousins threw two touchdown passes, including one with 34 seconds left. The Dirty Birds are now 1-and-1, so are the Eagles. Philadelphia will play the Saints in the Superdome this Sunday.

A big intrastate battle is set to go down on Saturday in Lafayette as the Ragin Cajuns host Tulane. U-L Lafayette Coach Michael Desormeaux says Tulane will be the toughest team they’ve faced this season…

The Cajuns are 2-and-0, while Tulane has suffered losses to Oklahoma and Kansas State after opening the season with a win over Southeastern Louisiana.

 

Starting this season, Pelicans fans can watch their team on TV for free. Greg Bensel with the Pelicans says the new rights deal with Gray Media will give many more fans the opportunity to watch games on TV.

The SEC has named LSU defensive end Bradyn Swinson as the conference’s defensive player of the week. Swinson had a career-high three sacks and a forced fumble in the victory over the Gamecocks.

 

LSU started the game with three linebackers on the field for the first time this year as Whit Weeks joined Greg Penn and Harold Perkins. Perkins played strongside linebacker and had three tackles, one for a loss and a fumble recovery. Coach Brian Kelly called it progress for one of their best defensive players…

McNeese quarterback Clifton McDowell is the Southland Offensive Player of the Week. Grambling’s Andrew Jones was named SWAC Defensive Player of the week for his performance in the Tigers overtime win at Texas A-and-M Commerce.

 

The Pelicans have a new way for fans to watch games as they are launching Gulf Coast Sports and Entertainment Network, which will be available to watch for free on over-the-air-TV stations owned by Gray Television. The NBA franchise says the new distribution agreement with Gray Media will make Pelicans games available to four-point-one million households, nearly seven million viewers throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, including the cities of Alexandria, Lake Charles, Monroe and Shreveport.  Team spokesperson Greg Bensel says in the coming weeks, the Pels will announce the create of their new streaming platform, Pelicans Plus…

LSU will host UCLA this Saturday. The Bruins were embarrassed by Indiana 42-13 in their Big Ten debut.

 

After one half of play in Raleigh, North Carolina on Saturday, it looked like Sonny Cumbie was going to get his biggest win as head coach of the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Tech led 20 to six at half, but were outscored 24 to three in the second half. Jack Turner threw a pick six early in the third quarter to start the rally.

 

McNeese rallied from ten down to beat Stephen F Austin 28 to 24 to win its Southland Opener on Saturday night in Lake Charles. Today Cowboys quarterback Clifton McDowell was named Southland Offensive Player of the Week. McDowell had two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

 

Grambling’s Andrew Jones was named SWAC Defensive Player of the week for his performance in the Tigers overtime win over Texas A-and-M Commerce. Jones leads the SWAC in tackles and had 13 tackles, two for a loss in the 35-28 win.

 

In high school football…Ruston now has the state’s longest winning streak at 16 games after Catholic High defeated St. Thomas More on Friday night.

McNeese quarterback Clifton McDowell has been named the Southland Offensive Player of the Week. McDowell led the Pokes on two fourth quarter drives to rally McNeese back from ten-point deficit to beat Stephen F Austin 28 to 24. McDowell rushed for two touchdowns and threw for two touchdowns.

 

Grambling also had a second half comeback on Saturday to beat Texas A-and-M Commerce to 35 to 28. Former LSU Tiger Tre Bradford rushed for two touchdowns, including the game winner in O-T. Grambling is 2-and-1 on the year.

 

Louisiana Tech led 17-6 at halftime over North Carolina State but the Wolfpack outscored the Bulldogs 24 to 3 to beat Tech 30 to 20. Tru Edwards had a career-high 148 receiving yards. The Bulldogs are home this Saturday against Tulsa.

 

Nicholls finally gets to play its first home game this Saturday as the Colonels host Mississippi Valley State. Nicholls lost to 11th ranked Sacramento State 34 to 7 on Saturday to start the season 0-and-3.

You could not have dreamed of a better start to the season for the Saints as New Orleans is 2-0 after clobbering the Cowboys 44 to 19 yesterday to end Dallas 16-game home winning streak in the regular season. Alvin Kamara scored four touchdowns and had 180 all-purpose yards and the Saints as a team rushed for 190 yards.

Derek Carr is off to a fantastic start as he threw for 243 yards and two touchdown passes. Coach Dennis Allen says the running game has taken a load off of Carr…

The defense intercepted Dak Prescott twice and held Dallas to 68 rushing yards.

The Saints will return home to host the Eagles this Sunday. Philadelphia hosts Atlanta tonight. Also in the NFC South, Tampa is 2-0 after beating the Lions in Detroit 20-16 and Carolina lost again, falling to the Chargers 26-3.

The LSU Tigers won a crazy game in Columbia, South Carolina, rallying back from a 17-0 deficit to beat the Gamecocks 36 to 33. The Tigers gave up two long rushing touchdowns, LSU had special teams miscues and Garrett Nussmeier threw an interception in the fourth quarter. Louisiana Tech was outscored 24 to 3 in the second half and lost to North Carolina State 30 to 20. Jack Turner threw for 281 yards and Tru Edwards caught four passes for 148 yards and a touchdown, but the Bulldogs rushed for just 43 yards.

McNeese scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to beat Stephen F Austin 28 to 24, Southeastern Louisiana beat Eastern Washington by that same score and Grambling over Texas A-and-M Commerce in overtime 35 to 28. Former LSU running back Tre Bradford had two rushing touchdowns, including the game-winner.

High school football tonight…a couple of defending state champions meet in Lafayette as St. Thomas More hosts Catholic High. In Shreveport, Calvary Baptist puts its 15-game winning streak on the line as it hosts the Neville Tigers.

Louisiana Tech looks to knock off a Power Four school when it visits North Carolina State at 11 AM. The Wolfpack are led by quarterback Grayson McCall, who was a dominant signal caller in the Sun Belt when he played at Coastal Carolina. Bulldogs coach Sonny Cumbie says this is McCall’s fifth year playing college football…

McCall threw for ten-thousand yards in 42 games at Coastal Carolina.

For the second straight week Tulane takes on a Top 25 opponent. Last week the Green Wave came close to beating Kansas State. Tomorrow Tulane faces 15th ranked Oklahoma. The Sooners are coming off a close 16-12 win over Houston.

In other action…Nicholls is at Sacramento State, McNeese hosts Stephen F Austin, Southeastern Louisiana faces Eastern Washington in Hammond, Grambling is at Texas A-and-M Commerce and Southern visits Jackson State.

The expectation heading into the season was that N-C State would be good on offense. Bulldogs coach Sonny Cumbie says they have a veteran quarterback in Grayson McCall and a talented receiver in K-C Concepion who was the A-C-C rookie of the year last year…

Northwestern State could not stop South Alabama last night as the Jaguars dominated the Demons 87 to 10. The 87 points scored were the most by an F-B-S school since 1991 when Fresno State scored 94 points in a game.

South Carolina features two good edge rushers in Dylan Stewart and Kyle Kennard. The two combined for seven tackles for a loss after two games.

 

There is a college football game tonight as Northwestern State visits South Alabama. Both teams are 0-and-2 and it’s the first time they’ve met on the gridiron.

 

LSU women’s basketball has landed a commitment from five-star guard Divine Bourrage from Davenport, Iowa. Hoopgurlz ranks Bourrage as the fifth best prospect in the Class of 2025 and she chose the Lady Tigers over South Carolina, Baylor, Illinois, Virginia Tech and Arizona.

 

LSU released its baseball schedule today. It’s a 30-game SEC schedule despite the addition of Oklahoma and Texas. The Tigers will visit both schools for weekend series along with Auburn, Texas A-and-M and South Carolina, now coached by Paul Mainieri. LSU will host Missouri, Mississippi State, Alabama, Tennessee and Arkansas.

 

Despite flooding and property damage in the New Orleans area from Hurricane Franciene, the Saints practiced today at the team’s training facility in Metairie. New Orleans will visit Dallas on Sunday and Coach Dennis Allen says he’s impressed with the Cowboys defense, which sacked Browns quarterback DeShaun Watson six times last week…

Weeks is one of the team leaders in tackles with 12 and he’s coming off a six tackle performance against Nicholls. Kelly says Weeks is playing too well for him to be a platoon player…

The Saints can make a huge statement with a win over Dallas on Sunday. New Orleans won by 37 points over Carolina in the season opener. Linebacker Demario Davis says they need to follow up that win with another one….

Cornerback Marshon Lattimore was one of five players who did not practice yesterday. He left Sunday’s win over the Panthers with a hamstring injury, he’s also dealing with a hip injury. New Orleans can really use Lattimore this Sunday as the Cowboys have one of the best receivers in the NFL in CeeDee Lamb.

Saints legend Steve Gleason, who suffers from A-L-S, is in the hospital for unspecified reasons according to a post on his X account. He’s listed in stable condition and New Orleans EMS and fire department had to take him to the hospital as Hurricane Franciene moved through New Orleans.
