The 14th ranked LSU Tigers are getting ready to face 25th ranked Mississippi State Saturday night in Starkville. The Bulldogs have been tough to be at home the last couple of years as they’ve recently expanded their stadium, plus there’s thousands of cow bells going off during the game. But Coach Les Miles is not worried about the cowbells..

Last year, Mississippi State came into Baton Rouge and beat the Tigers 34-29.

According to the NFL Network, Saints running back C.J. Spiller will not play in the team’s season opener this Sunday against Arizona. Spiller is recovering from minor knee surgery and should be back in uniform for Week 2. It appears that Khiry Robinson will return from injury in the near future. Robinson tweeted Monday that he was back in pads at practice.

Several Louisiana colleges have their home opener this weekend. The Ragin Cajuns, who nearly upset Kentucky last weekend, welcomes Northwestern State to Cajun Field. When UL Lafayette Coach Mark Hudspeth met with the media this week, he did not name a starting QB. Brooks Haack started against the Wildcats, but back-up Jalen Nixon led the Cajuns on quite a comeback. Saturday’s game can be seen on ESPN3.

Also this weekend, ULM hosts Nicholls State. It’s the season opener for the Colonels, while the Warhawks are coming off a 51-14 loss to Georgia. McNeese State hosts Incarnate Word, Grambling takes on Bethune-Cookman, while Southeastern Louisiana hosts Florida Tech.

NBA playoff seeding will now be based solely on team records. The league’s Board of Governors unanimously approved the change Tuesday. The ruling means a division championship no longer guarantees a top four seed in the conference playoffs. Teams in each conference will now be seeded from one to eight based solely on their won-loss record.

Mississippi State is ranked 25th in the latest AP poll that came out today, while LSU is ranked 14th. Ohio State is number one and Alabama is number two.

Louisiana Tech quarterback Jeff Driskel is the Louisiana Sports Writers Association offensive player of the week. Driskel threw four touchdown passes and for 274 yards in a blowout win over Southern.

The Saints are off today, but they are still looking at making some adjustments to their 53-man roster. The Black and Gold reportedly brought in a couple of kickers, Nick Novak and Caleb Sturgis for a tryout. And the Saints also had former New York Giant and Indianapolis Colt Hakeem Nicks in for a workout.

Louisiana Tech has a short week of preparation for its Conference USA opener against Western Kentucky. But Bulldogs quarterback Jeff Driskel should have a lot of confidence heading into this game. H was 12-of-15 for 274 yards in last Saturday’s win over Southern. Driskel also threw four touchdown passes. Driskel and the Dogs take on Western Kentucky Thursday at 7 PM.

The Saints are reportedly still looking at kickers. Seventh round pick Zach Hocker is the lone kicker on the roster, but the Black and Gold are also bringing in a couple of kickers for tryouts today. Former Charger Nick Novak and ex-Dolphin Caleb Sturgis both are getting a look by New Orleans after losing training camp battles with their respective former teams.

There are a couple of newly ranked number one teams in the high school football polls. Southern Lab is now ranked number one in One-A after blanking Bogalusa this past Friday. The Jaguars will host the Division Two state champions University High this Friday. Parkview Baptist also moved to the top spot in 3A. The Eagles rallied to beat Catholic High this past Friday and they’ll visit Riverside on Thursday in a game that will be televised on Fox Sports New Orleans.

Former LSU pitcher Louis Coleman has rejoined the Kansas City Royas after being called up from the team’s Triple-A team in Omaha. With Coleman up in the big leagues, LSU now has ten former players on Major League rosters.

Coach Sean Payton did not speak with media Monday, but we should get better idea later in the week on the availability of several injured players like running backs CJ Spiller and Khiry Robinson, safety Jairus Byrd, and cornerback Brandon Browner.

ULM’s Rashon Ceasar has been named the Sun Belt Conference’s Offensive student-athlete of the week. Ceasar had a career-high 13 catches, a personal best 153 yards, and two touchdown catches in the Warhawks loss to Georgia. ULM hosts Nicholls State Saturday.

The Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week is Southeastern Louisiana’s Harlan Miller. The junior from Kentwood had two interceptions in the Lions season opening win over Northwestern State. Southeastern hits the road to take on Ohio University Saturday, while the Demons travel to face UL-Lafayette.

In the latest F-C-S Coaches poll…S-L-U is ranked 18th, while McNeese State remains at number 23.

But Tech has a quick turnaround this week, as they visit Western Kentucky on Thursday. The Hilltoppers upset Vandy last week.

ULM fell in their season opener to No. 9 Georgia in Athens 51-14. UL-Lafayette lost to Kentucky 40-33. The Wildcats scored a touchdown with less than a minute to go to escape with the 7 point win. Louisiana Tech beat Southern in Ruston, 62-15. Former Tech Coach Sonny Dykes and Cal beat Grambling State 73-14.

The New Orleans Saints have started toying with their roster. Safety Kenny Phillips has been waived along with defensive lineman Ashaad Mabry sources said Sunday. The Black and Gold take on the Cardinals on Sunday in Arizona at 3:05. Meanwhile, former Saints and Tulane QB Ryan Griffin has been claimed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Franklin Parish remains in shock over the death of 16-year-old Tyrell Cameron, who lost his life from an apparent broken neck sustained while playing football on Friday night. Matt Reynolds is the play-by-play man for the Franklin Parish Patriots and says Cameron was covering a punt and ran into a Sterlington player who was blocking for the returner…:

Tragedy struck at a high school football game in Winnsboro last night, as Tyrell Cameron, a sophomore for Franklin Parish, died from injuries he sustained while returning a punt in a game against Sterlington. Cameron was taken off the field on a stretcher in the fourth quarter and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The school tweeted out that Tyrell will live in the memory of those who loved him. They asked asked for prayers for his family.

Today is the first Saturday of the college football season. At six-thirty tonight in Tiger Stadium, LSU will host McNeese State. The Cowboys nearly upset Nebraska in Lincoln last year, but McNeese Coach Matt Viator says playing in Baton Rouge will be a bigger test for his team….

For LSU, sophomore Brandon Harris will start his first game at quarterback at home.

ULM is a big underdog heading into today’s game against ninth ranked Georgia. The Bulldogs are a 35-point favorite. In 2012, the Warhawks opened the season with a win over Arkansas. Georgia has a new starter at quarterback, Virginia transfer Greyson Lambert.

UL-Lafayette and Kentucky face off for the first time ever at six o’ clock in Lexington. The Cajuns have never defeated a team who plays in the SEC. Louisiana Tech opens its season by hosting Southern. The Jaguars are 0-7 against FBS schools. Southern will have its hands full with Tech running back Kenneth Dixon who is the school’s all-time leader in touchdowns.

Louisiana Tech’s former coach, Sonny Dykes, begins his third season at Cal by hosting Grambling State. The Tigers have lost all 13 games they’ve played against FBS teams since 1996. Cal has won 11 of its last 13 home openers. Kick-off is at 4 PM.

In the NFL…the Steelers traded former LSU punter Brad Wing to the New York Giants. Former Louisiana Tech star IK Ememkpali was cut by the Buffalo Bills.

Louisiana Tech cut the ribbon today on the 22-million dollar Davison Athletics complex. The 70-thousand-plus square building sits behind the south end zone. It features a weight room, locker room and coaches offices. The new facility has been described as a game changer for the program. The Bulldogs host Southern tomorrow night.

Big match-ups tonights in high school football. The LHSAA Game of the Week, which can be seen on Fox Sports New Orleans pits UHIGH versus Rummel. Also tonight…Teurlings Catholic hosts Calvary and North Webster is at Haynesville.

NFL teams are busy releasing teams as they get ready for the regular season. The Houston Texans have reportedly released former LSU running back Kenny Hilliard. The Dolphins have also said good bye to former Tiger Anthony Johnson, while the Steelers traded former LSU punter Brad Wing to the New York Giants.

And the NFL owners are reportedly discussing whether to change Commissioner Roger Goodell’s role in player discipline after losing in federal court over deflategate.

A big football weekend got started last night with the Saints finishing off the preseason without a win. Green Bay thumped New Orleans 38-10. There were some positives, Brandon Coleman who is fighting to be the Saints number three wide receiver, had four catches for 82 yards. Another wideout, Willie Snead, who is trying to make the team, had three catches for 31 yards, including a seven yard touchdown pass from Luke McCown. In the battle for third-string quarterback, Ryan Griffin was 7 of 13 for 56 yards, while Garrett Grayson was 8 of 19 for 71 yards and two interceptions.

Southeastern Louisiana began defense of its Southland Conference championship with a 34 to 20 win over Northwestern State. The Lions rushed for 438 yards. Quarterback D’Shaie Landor led the way with 125 yards on the ground.

And Duke dominated Tulane by beating the Green Wave 37 to 7 at Yulman Stadium.

It’s the opening weekend of the high school football season. Great game last night between Jennings and Kinder and it was Kinder who pulled off the victory 41-40. Tonight’s marquee match-ups are North Webster at Haynesville, Calvary Baptist hosts Teurlings Catholic, Parkview battles Catholic and Rummel visits UHIGH in the LHSAA Game of the Week.

There are some who LSU can be one of the four teams in the college football playoffs. We’ll see how they look tomorrow night when they host McNeese State in the season opener. Coach Les Miles says it’s nice to be recognized as one of the top teams in the country and the players believe they can compete with anyone…

The Saints face the Green Bay Packers tonight in the final preseason game of the year. It’s a big game for former Tulane quarterback Ryan Griffin. He’s expected to take plenty of snaps and needs a good performance to make the team. Kick-off is at 6 PM.

Griffin’s alma mater, Tulane, begins its season tonight as the Green Wave host Duke. Tulane went three and nine last season and lost to the Blue Devils.

In Natchitoches…Northwestern State will host Southeastern Louisiana. The Lions are the two-time defending champs in the Southland. They have a new quarterback this season, UL Lafayette transfer D’Shaie Landor. S-L-U Coach Ron Roberts says Landor is a gifted player….

Is it possible Saints Coach Sean Payton could get some of his 2012 Bountygate suspension salary back now that Tom Brady won his case against the NFL? Legal analyst Chick Foret says the bad news is that Brady was covered under the collective bargaining agreement and coaches aren’t. He says the good news for Payton is that he has the same agent that helped Brady, Don Yee…:

Les Miles is hoping his youngest son will one day play for him at LSU. Tigers recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson has offered Ben Miles a scholarship to play at LSU. Miles is a fullback for the Catholic High Bears in Baton Rouge. And Coach says the scholarship offer is deserving:
