In other college football news…McNeese head coach Sterling Gilbert has resigned and he’s reportedly taking the offensive coordinator job at Syracuse. Athletics director Bruce Hemphill says someone will be getting a great opportunity to become the next head coach at McNeese.

The Pelicans visit the Pistons to wrap up a three-game road trip tonight. New Orleans lost badly to the Celtics on Saturday.

Larose has it’s purple and gold ready for the big game tonight. The Lafourche Parish town is Coach O’s hometown. Larose attorney and longtime friend of Orgeron,Henry LaFont, says there is a surreal feeling, because everyone knows about the long path it took for Orgeron to lead the LSU football program to the doorstep of a championship.

Saints Coach Sean Payton served as a guest analyst on ESPN’s NFL Countdown and said he expects quarterback Drew Brees to be on the field for the Black and Gold in 2020. It’s been reported that one network has reached out to Brees about becoming a TV game analyst.

McNeese State needs a new head football coach. Sterlin Gilbert has resigned to reportedly take the job as offensive coordinator at Syracuse. Gilbert spent just one season as the head coach at McNeese and the Cowboys went 7-and-5.

Not sure how many people from Louisiana will be watching, but the Pelicans are in Detroit tonight to face the Pistons. New Orleans is trying to finish a three-game road trip with a 2-and-1 record.

Grambling is 3-and-0 in the SWAC and visit Alcorn State tonight. LSU is 3-and-0 in the SEC and will visit Texas A-and-M tomorrow. Louisiana Tech is 3-and-1 in league play and will host Rice on Thursday. Nicholls is 5-and-1 in the Southland and host Northwestern State on Wednesday.

LSU remains a 5.5 point favorite. The over-under is 69.5.

Two more Saints players have been added to the N-F-C Pro Bowl team, tight end Jared Cook and guard Andrus Peat. That gives the Saints nine players on the Pro Bowl squad, a franchise record.

The N-F-L Divisional round of the playoffs kicks-off this afternoon with the 49ers hosting the Vikings. San Francisco has activated Former LSU linebacker Kwon Alexander off of injured reserve. Alexander hasn’t played since tearing his pectoral muscle on October 31st.

The Pelicans continued their recent run of good play last night with a 123 to 111 victory over the lowly New York Knicks. Brandon Ingram had 28 points, rookie Jaxson Hayes had a double-double 18 points and 10 rebounds. Lonzo Ball also had a double-double, 15 points, and 11 assists. New Orleans has won seven of its last nine and are in Boston tonight.

Tonight at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, LSU hosts Mississippi State. The Tigers are 2-and-0 in league play, while the Bulldogs are 0-and-2. LSU freshman Trendon Watford is playing well as of late and he’s averaging 13 points and six rebounds a game. State is led by six-foot-10 sophomore Reggie Perry, who is averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds. Tip time is at 7.

Also tonight, Louisiana Tech is at UTEP. Grambling visits southern University. ULM is at Georgia State, while the Ragin Cajuns are at Georgia Southern. Northwestern State is at McNeese and Nicholls visits S-L-U.

Both LSU and Clemson will arrive in New Orleans later today aheasd of Monday’s national championship game. Clemson has won 29 straight. The Tigers last loss was to Alabama in the 2018 Sugar bowl. Jennings native and Clemson running back Travis Etienne was a freshman that season and didn’t play well after taking a big hit on the opening kickoff

Even though LSU will play for a national championship on Monday, the spring semester will still start Monday as previously planned. LSU Faculty Senate President Doctor Mandi Lopez says with many classes only meeting once or twice a week, losing that time would be detrimental…

Louisiana Tech’s first Conference USA road game did not go well last night as U-T-S-A hit a school-record 18 three-pointers in a 89-73 loss to the Roadrunners. At one point the Bulldogs found themselves down by 29 points.

The Ragin Cajuns fell behind 25 to 2 and lost to Georgia State 90-52. ULM also lost on the road last night, falling to Georgia Southern 67-56.

Tonight, the Pelicans will visit the New York Knicks. Brandon Ingram has been playing at an All-Star level for New Orleans, averaging 24 points and shooting 40-percent from three-point territory. Tip time is at 6:15.

Saints tight end Jared Cook and guard Andrus Peat have been added to the pro Bowl. That brings the total number of Saints on the N-F-C Pro Bowl team to a record nine players. The Pro Bowl is January 26th in Orlando.

And New Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule is reportedly interested in interviewing LSU passing game coordinator Joe Brady to be his offensive coordinator.

New Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach will be introduced during a press conference in Starkville today. Leach is known for his quirky style and he got off the plane last night ringing a cowbell. In 18 seasons at Texas Tech and Washington State, he was 139-and-90.

The 13-and-25 Pelicans visit the Knicks tonight, who have 10 wins. Brandon Ingram is making a run for the All-Star team, he’s averaging 25 points a game and shooting 40-percent from three-point territory.

ULM’s JD Williams had 20 points, but the Warhawks lost to Georgia Southern 67-56 last night. ULM is 6-9 overall, 2-and-4 in the Sun Belt.

The Ragin Cajuns fell behind 25 to 2 and lost to Georgia State 90-52 in Atlanta. U-L Lafayette dressed just seven scholarship players as freshman Mylik Wilson did not play because of a knee sprain. The Cajuns are 7-and-10 overall, 2-and-4 in Sun Belt action.

Louisiana Tech also got off to a slow start last night and lost to UTSA 89-73 in San Antonio. The Roadrunners hit a program-record 18 three-pointers. Tech is 11-and-4 overall, 2-and-1 in Conference USA.

The LSU Lady Tigers upset 10th ranked Texas A-and-M in College Station. Jailin Cherry came off the bench to score 12 points.

Louisiana Tech has released its 2020 football schedule. The Conference USA opener is at Southern Miss in Week 2. The Bulldogs conclude the regular season at FIU.

Rabalais says Alleva told him in an interview yesterday that he preferred Miles at that time…

SEC Football got a whole lot more interesting today as Mississippi State hired Mike Leach as its new head football coach. Leach has had successful stints at Washington State and Texas Tech and will go head-to-head in recruiting with new Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffen. Leach and the Bulldogs will be in Tiger Stadium to face LSU on October 24th next year.

Louisiana Tech has released its 2020 football schedule. The Bulldogs will kick-off the season on September 5th at UNLV. The Conference USA opener is the next week versus Southern Miss in Hattiesburg. Tech will host league opponents UTEP, Marshall, UAB and Rice and conclude the season at FIU.

Louisiana Tech basketball visits UTSA tonight at 6 PM in a game that can be seen on E-S-P-N-U. The Bulldogs are off to a 2-0 start in Conference USA Play, with two victories over Southern Miss. The Roadrunners were picked to finish second in the conference in the preseason, but they are off to an 0-and-2 start.

The man who hired Orgeron as head coach gave some eye-popping comments to Advocate columnist Scott Rabalais. Joe Alleva told Rabalais he was not interested in hiring Jimbo Fisher in 2015 and could have hired Tom Herman in 2016, but was not willing to pay Herman the money he was looking for.

Last night was a good night for Louisiana basketball teams. The Pelicans beat the Bulls 123 to 108. New Orleans has won seven of its last ten and will visit the Knicks on Friday night.

LSU improved to 2-and-0 in the SEC with a 79-77 home win over Arkansas. Freshman Trendon Watford had a career-high 21 points and had two three-point plays in a span of 24 seconds in the final minute.

Nicholls is in a three-way tie for first place in the Southland after beating Lamar 61-52. The Colonels are 4-and-1 in league play. McNeese upset Abilene Christan 88-84 as A-J Lawson had a career-high 35 points. Sha’markus Kennedy had a double-double, 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Northwestern State is 3-and-2 in the Southland, its best start in league play since 2015 after beating Incarnate Word 77-66.

On the injury front, Coach O says he expects starting wide receiver Terrace Marshall and right guard Damien Lewis will play in the title game after missing practice last week because of injuries.

LSU improved to 2-and-0 in the SEC with a 79-77 home win over Arkansas. 19 lead changes in this game and freshman Trendon Watford was huge down the stretch. He completed two three-point plays in the final minute and finished with 21 points and nine rebounds. Skylar Mays had 19 points.

Northwestern State is 3-and-2 in Southland play after a 72-66 victory over Incarnate Word. The Demons are off to their best league start since the 2014-15 season. Chudier Bile scored a career-high 22 points last night.

Nicholls is 4-and-1 in league play after a 61-52 win over Lamar. A-J Lawson had 37 points as McNeese defeated Abilene Christian 88-84 for the Cowboys first Southland win.

Southeastern Louisiana could not hold on to a 15-point halftime lead and lost to Sam Houston State 67-62. UCONN topped Tulane 67-61.

The Saints might also need to find another offense guard. Starting guard Andrus Peat is one of 25 players on the current roster that is set to become a free agent. Bree can also become a free agent in March. Payton believes Drew wants to keep playing.

After a couple of days off, LSU begins game week practices today for Monday night’s national championship matchup with Clemson. Tigers Center Lloyd Cushenberry says the time off gave them a chance to reflect a little bit on what they’ve done so far…

Tonight is the SEC home opener for the LSU basketball team. The Tigers will welcome 12-and-1 Arkansas to the PMAC for an 8 PM tip off. The Razorbacks are led by first-year coach Eric Musselman, who is a former assistant coach at LSU under former head man Johnny Jones.

The Pelicans will host the Chicago Bulls. McNeese is at Abilene Christian, who is undefeated in Southland play. Nicholls is at Lamar. Colonels athletics director Matt Roan is leaving to be the A-D at Eastern Kentucky.
