4:45 LRN Sportscast May 12

The NFL schedule comes out at 7 PM, but the league has already released the matchups for week one. The Saints will host the Green Bay Packers on September 12th. It will be a 3:25 kick-off and it remains to be seen if Aaron Rodgers will still be with the Packers when that day arrives.

Again the official schedule comes out at 7 PM, but the entire schedule has already been leaked on the internet. The Saints will have five primetime games including a Thanksgiving night matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

LSU announces all-American cornerback Derek Stingley Junior will wear number seven in 2021. That jersey number usually goes to the Tigers best playmaker.

In seven innings last night, LSU scored 16 runs and beat 14th ranked Louisiana Tech for a second time this season. 16-8 was the final last night after defeating the Bulldogs 16-7 in February. LSU will host Alabama this weekend, while Tech hosts UTSA.

The Pelicans season could effectively come to an end tonight if New Orleans losses at Dallas, and the Spurs defeat the Brooklyn Nets. San Antonio’s game in Brookyn tips off at 7 PM, while the Pels and Mavs will get underway at 8 PM.

In the Sun Belt softball tournament, top-seeded U-L Lafayette blanked ULM seven to nothing. The Lady Cajuns will face South Alabama tomorrow at 10 AM, while the Warhawks will play in an elimination game.

Because of all of the rain Hammond, the Southland Conference Softball Tournament has been moved to St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Fifth-seeded Southeastern Louisiana is scheduled to play tonight at 7:30 versus Abilene Christian.

At the state baseball championships in Sulphur, Notre Dame and St. Charles Catholic have advanced to the Division 3 championship game. The Pioneers defeated St. Thomas Aquinas three to two in eight innings, and the Comets blanked Lafayette Christian three to nothing.

In Division Four…seventh-seeded Opelousas Catholic upended third-seeded Calvary Baptist four to three in eight innings.

Earlier this season, LSU defeated Louisiana Tech 16-7, last night the Fighting Tigers topped the 14th ranked Bulldogs 16-8 in a game halted in the seventh inning, because of lighting. Freshman first baseman Tre Morgan continues to swing a hot bat as he went four for five with 2 runs driven in. Zach Arnold was three for four with 4 RBI. Tech jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Greg Martinez and Kyle Griffen combined to give up seven runs. Taylor Young had two hits and drove in two runs in a losing effort.

The Ragin Cajuns game against Southern was halted after a half-inning of play because of lighting in Lafayette. U-L will now get ready for a big Sun Belt Series against U-T-A. The Mavericks lead the West division with an 11-and-7, while the Cajuns are two games back at 9-and-9. That series will begin Friday in Arlington.

The Pelicans host the Mavericks at 8 PM tonight. If New Orleans losses, they are eliminated from appearing in the play-in tournament. A San Antonio win over the Nets tonight in Brooklyn will also end the Pels chances.

Tonight at 7 PM the NFL schedule will come out. When will the Saints play the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers, who they lost to in the playoffs? Also, will New Orleans still appear in a lot of primetime games, even though Drew Brees is retired?

LSU All-American cornerback Derek Stingley Junior will wear the number seven jersey for the Tigers in the 2021 season. Stingley has been wearing number 24. The number seven jersey goes to the team’s top playmaker.

Sports betting legislation at the State Capitol is advancing. The Louisiana House has approved a bill that would allow sports betting to take place at bars and restaurants that serve alcohol. There would be kiosks at those sites to place bets. A Senate committee has also approved a bill that would allow sports betting parlors at the state’s casinos and race tracks.

The Pelicans chances of getting into the NBA’s play-in tournament are very slim after New Orleans lost at Memphis last night and the Spurs beat the Bucks. New Orleans is 2.5 games back of San Antonio for the final spot in the play-in tournament and the Pels only have three games left to play.

The Louisiana House has approved a sports betting bill that would allow bars and restaurants that serve alcohol to have kiosks where you would be able to place a wager on a game in 55 of the 64 parishes where voters approved sports betting. Crowley Representative John Stefanski says the Louisiana Lottery will oversee these kiosks…

The New Orleans Pelicans lost to the Memphis Grizzlies last night 115-110 as the team played once again without stars Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson.  Not only did the Pels lose, but the Spurs beat the Bucks, meaning New Orleans’ chances of making the play-in tournament even slimmer.  The Pelicans trail San Antonio by two and a half games for the final spot with just three games remaining in the regular season.

In college basketball, former Ragin Cajuns guard Mylik Wilson has announced he’s transferring to Texas Tech. The former Rayville standout averaged 13 points a game last season.  Also, The Lady Bulldogs announce six-foot-two forward Kate Thompson is transferring to La Tech after spending last season at Wisconsin.

The Ragin Cajuns baseball team is scheduled to host the Southern Jaguars tonight in Lafayette, and the high school baseball season comes to an end this week in Sulphur as the LHSAA Baseball State Championships begin today.

The Tigers are 29-18 overall, nine and 15 in the SEC. LSU is ranked 22nd in the RPI and this is a big week for the Bayou Bengals if they want to make the NCAA Tournament. That’s because Tech has an RPI of 24 and LSU’s opponent this weekend, Alabama, has an RPI of 29.

Also tonight, after sweeping North Alabama, the Ragin Cajuns will host Southern.

After losing to Memphis and San Antonio defeating the Bucks, the Pelicans’ chances of making the NBA play-in tournament are very slim. Playing once again without Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, New Orleans lost to Memphis 115 to 110 last night. The Pels trail the tenth-place Spurs by two and a half games and there are only three games left in the season.

The high school baseball season comes to an end this week in Sulphur as the LHSAA Baseball State Championships begin today. There are eight semi-final contests today. The one-a semifinals are tonight as top-seeded Oak Grove faces 12th seeded Slaughter Community Charter, who is nine and ten on the season. Today’s other One-A semi-final game is second-seeded Grand Lake versus sixth-seeded LaSalle.

After rallying from a 14-point deficit to beat Charlotte 112 to 110 last night, the Pelicans are in Memphis tonight as they continue their quest to try and catch San Antonio for the final spot in the play-in tournament. New Orleans trails the Spurs by 1.5 games. San Antonio hosts the Bucks tonight.

LSU men’s basketball has received a signed national letter of intent from seven-footer Efton Reid, a five-star prospect from I-M-G Academy in Florida. Reid chose LSU over Florida State, Pittsburgh, Virginia, North Carolina, and Ohio State and also had scholarship offers from Kansas and Louisville. 24-7-sports ranks Reid as the nation’s 28th best prospect.

Saints defensive end Cam Jordan is donating 120-thousand dollars to the New Orleans Police Department so that the NOPD can provide anti-racism training to 80 officers over the next two years. Jordan says he hopes this police-training program can bring a positive impact to New Orleans.

After taking two of three from Auburn, LSU baseball is looking forward to a big week. Tomorrow they are scheduled to host 14th ranked Louisiana Tech and then Alabama for the weekend. The Crimson Tide is 11 and 12 in the SEC, while the Tigers are 9-and-15. The series starts Friday.

Because of heavy rainfall in Miami, Louisiana Tech only played two games this past weekend against F-I-U, splitting a doubleheader on Saturday. Bulldogs Coach Lane Burroughs says having two games rained out might be a good thing…

The New Orleans Pelicans grabbed a much-needed win over the Charlotte Hornets 112-110 as they kept their play-in tournament hopes alive.  Guard Eric Bledsoe had 24 points for the Pelicans and Jaxson Hayes to add 18 points and 8 rebounds.  The Pels were able to overcome Terry Rozier’s 43 points without the help of Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram.  New Orleans now trails San Antonio by a game and a half for the final spot in the play-in tournament.  The Pels will take on Memphis tonight.

The Pelicans kept their hopes alive of reaching the play-in tournament with a 112 to 110 win over the Hornets in Charlotte last night. Terry Rozier had 43 points for Charlotte, but Eric Bledsoe had 24 points for the Pelicans and Jaxson Hayes came off the bench and scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds as New Orleans played without Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, who are both injured. New Orleans trails San Antonio by a game and a half for the final spot in the play-in tournament. There are four games left in the season and the Pels are at Memphis tonight.

The Bulldogs doubleheader against F-I-U in Miami was rained out yesterday. Tech split a doubleheader with the Panthers on Saturday and Southern Miss has moved into first in the Conference USA West Division.

There’s a three-way tie for first place in the Southland between UNO, Abilene Christian and Southeastern Louisiana. Nicholls doubled up the Lions four to two yesterday. Northwestern State took three of four from McNeese, including a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

Pelicans superstar Zion Williamson is out for the rest of the season with a fractured finger. The Pels are only one and a half games out of the playing tournament with six games left to go, so this likely puts a wrap on the season. Pels Executive Vice President David Griffin ripped into the league after the news broke, saying the injury is the result of the hammering Zion has taken all year due to officials who won’t give him calls.

LSU looks for its fourth straight win tonight when the Tigers face Auburn on the Plains. The Bayou Bengals beat Auburn eight to three last night as Tre Morgan had four hits and drove in two runs. Junior right-hander Landon Marceaux gave up three runs in 6.1 innings to get the win. First pitch tonight is at 7 PM and A-J Labas gets the start for the Bayou Bengals.

Louisiana Tech looks to extend its school-record 10-game winning streak on the road when they begin a four-game series at F-I-U. The Panthers are 8-and-16 in Conference USA play, but Bulldogs Coach Lane Burroughs knows they have plenty of talent….

At the Beach Volleyball national championships, fourth-seeded Loyola Marymount defeated LSU this morning, but the Sandy Tigers kept their season alive by defeating T-C-U this afternoon in Gulf Shores, Alabama. LSU is scheduled to play again tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM against either second-seeded U-S-C or third-seeded Florida State.

Back to college baseball….22nd ranked Tulane is at 13th ranked East Carolina. The Green Wave enter the weekend in first place in the American Athletic Conference, while the Pirates are in second place.

ULM hosts U-T Arlington who leads the Sun Belt West Division. Southeastern Louisiana leads the Southland Conference and the Lions have a big four-game series versus Nicholls.

Tre Morgan had four hits, including a two-run triple in the eighth inning to put the game away as LSU opened a three-game series at Auburn with an eight to three win on the Plains. Morgan leads the team in hitting with a .375 average and the Tigers improved their league record to 8-and-14. Game two is tonight at 7 and A-J Labas will start on the hill for the Tigers.

The Pelicans are at Philadelphia tonight. Brandon Ingram will not play because of a sprained ankle. The Pels are a 1.5 games back of San Antonio for the final spot in the play-in tournament.

Calvary Baptist Quarterback Landry Lyddy announced on Twitter that he has committed to Louisiana Tech. Lyddy led the Cavaliers to a Division Four state championship last year as he threw for 35-hundred yards, 43 touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Ragin Cajuns have announced they will play Michigan State in East Lansing in September of 2024.
