It didn’t look good when flames and black smoke were seen coming off the roof of the Superdome yesterday afternoon. But it turned out not to be a big deal. Officials say a pressure washer that was cleaning the roof of the dome started the fire and the blaze was under control a half-hour later. One worker suffered minor burns and the Saints are still scheduled to play in the dome on October 3rd.

After three games, LSU sophomore defensive end BJ Ojulari leads the nation in sacks with 4.5. He recorded 2.5 sacks in the win over Central Michigan. Ojulari says he’s picked up great pass-rushing skills from fellow teammates and coaches…

The ULM football team celebrated its first win since November 23rd, 2019 when the Warhawks beat Jackson State 12 to seven on Saturday. Coach Terry Bowden says ending a 12-game losing streak was great, now it’s time to start winning some Sun Belt games…

ULM will host Troy for the Sun Belt opener at 7 PM. The Ragin Cajuns are on the road this Saturday as U-L Lafayette will visit Georgia Southern. G-S-U has been blown out in its last two games, losing to F-A-U 38-6 and Arkansas 45-10.

Louisiana Tech opens Conference USA play by hosting North Texas. The Mean Green are one and two after losses to SMU and UAB.

This afternoon the roof of the Superdome caught on fire sending black smoke to the sky. Officials say the fire occurred on the exterior of the Caesars Superdome in the gutter tub of the roof. The fire was quickly extinguished and it’s believed a pressure washer being used to clean the roof caught on fire. The damage is still being assessed. The Saints are set to host the New York Giants in the Caesars Superdome on October 3rd.

Meanwhile, the players are off today and they’ll return to practice tomorrow in Fort Worth, Texas on the campus T-C-U. Defensive tackle Malcolm Roach says they will strive to be more consistent after suffering a loss at the hands of the Panthers last Sunday….

In LSU’s win over Central Michigan on Saturday, four different wide receivers caught at least five passes. Coach Ed Orgeron says it’s good to have a number of guys who can make plays in the passing game…

On the injury front, defensive end Andre Anthony will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. But Orgeron expects freshman running back Armoni Goodwin will return to the field after injuring his ankle in the McNeese game. Coach O is also hoping free safety Jay Ward can return to the field because he says they need him going up against Mississippi State’s air raid offense.

In the NBA, former Pelican and three-point specialist J-J Redick announced his retirement today ending a 15-year career in the NBA.

In the latest high school football polls. Catholic High of Baton Rouge, Karr, U-High, Lafayette Christian and Calvary Baptist are the number one ranked teams in the five classifications. The Catholic Bears got a big game this week against Warren Easton, while Karr will face a talented Scotlandville squad.

Southeastern Louisiana is ranked 16th in both FCS polls. The Lions have this week off and begin Southland play on October 2nd at McNeese.

LSU’s BJ Ojulari has been named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week. The sophomore from Marietta, Georgia had 2.5 sacks in the win over the Chippewas. Ojulari is the nation’s sacks leader with 4.5.

Ragin Cajuns running back Montrell Johnson had four touchdowns in last week’s win over Ohio and he’s been named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the week. ULM’s Calum Sutherland is the Sun Belt Special Team’s player of the week after kicking four field goals in a 12-7 win over Jackson State.

LSU’s offense looked much better in the Tigers 49-21 win over Central Michigan on Saturday. Quarterback Max Johnson threw for 372 yards and five touchdowns. Kayshon Boutte was LSU’s leading receiver with six catches, but the Tigers showed off their depth at wide receiver as Deion Smith, Jack Bech and Devonta Lee each had five catches. As good as the Saints were in their week one win over Green Bay, they were just as bad yesterday in a 26-7 loss to the Carolina Panthers. New Orleans had just 128 yards of total offense and they hit Quarterback Jameis Winston 11 times and sacked him four times. Winston was also intercepted twice. The 128 yards is the fewest yards gained in a game for the Saints since 2001. And it’s the Black and Gold’s first loss to Carolina since 2018.

Tampa Bay improved to 2-0 on the season with a 48-25 win over the Atlanta Falcons. The Cowboys evened their record to 1-and-1 with a 20-17 win over the Chargers. Greg Zuerlein’s 56-yard field goal as time expired was the game winner. Joe Burrow was intercepted three times in a three point loss to the Bears.

Dominating performance last night for the Ragin Cajuns as freshman Montrell Johnson rushed for a career-high four touchdowns in a 49-14 win over Ohio.

Because of the lack of hotel space in the Baton Rouge area, the Central Michigan football team will fly into Baton Rouge the day of the game and fly back to Mount Pleasant after the contest.

Louisiana Tech will welcome one of its former head coaches to Ruston on Saturday when the Bulldogs host Sonny Dykes and the SMU Mustangs. Dykes coached at La Tech from 2010 to 2012. He got the head coaching job at SMU in 2018 and Tech head coach Skip Holtz believes this is his best team…

Montrell Johnson had four rushing touchdowns last night as the Ragin Cajuns easily defeated the Ohio Bobcats 49-14. Levi Lewis threw for 214 yards and a touchdown. U-L Lafayette is now 2-and-1 and the Cajuns will open Sun Belt play next Saturday when they visit Georgia Southern.

LSU is a 20-point favorite heading into tomorrow night’s home game against Central Michigan. A couple of starting offensive linemen will be back on the field for the Bayou Bengals, Austin Deculus and Chasen Hines, while tackle Cam Wire remains sidelined with an undisclosed injury.

Louisiana Tech is a 13-point home dog for Saturday afternoon’s game against S-M-U. Tech is 1-and-1 on the season after barely getting past Southeastern Louisiana. The Mustangs are 2-and-0 after blowout victories over Abilene Christian and North Texas. Tech Coach Skip Holtz wants to see his team play with a chip on its shoulder…
