Kelly awarded the number 18 jersey to edge rusher B-J Ojulari. The 18 jersey goes to the player that best epitomizes what it means to be an LSU football palyer. Kelly says Ojulari’s attention to detail and focus represents the program in a positive way in the classroom, in the community and on the field.

The Ragin Cajuns are going through their first preseason camp with Michael Desormeaux as their head coach. The former U-L Lafayette quarterback spent the last six seasons on the Ragin Cajuns staff and was co-offensive coordinator last year. The Fighting Tigers’ 2023 recruiting class picked up their first five star commitment on Saturday when Catholic High wide receiver Shelton Sampson announced his commitment to LSU. Sampson is six-foot-four, 181 pounds and caught 40 passes and 11 touchdowns for the Division One champion Catholic High Bears last season.

Woodlawn of Baton Rouge Quarterback Rickie Collins will announce his commitment on Wednesday night. He’s expected to choose LSU.

Desormeaux says he’s not interested in rotating quarterbacks once the season begins, so whoever is named the starter that will be the guy.

The Saints hold their 11th training camp practice today. On Saturday, wide receiver Michael Thomas participated in eleven on eleven drills for the first time, another sign he’s getting up to speed after missing all of the 2021 season with an ankle injury. Kicker Will Lutz who also missed all of last season with a core muscle injury has also looked good at camp.

LSU’s preseason camp is underway and running back Tre Bradford is not on the roster. Coach Brian Kelly says Bradford is no longer enrolled at LSU. That’s when the Brian Kelly era will officially kick off. Offensive tackle Trevor Penning and defensive lineman Malcolm Roach hit the showers early yesterday after both got into a scuffle. Wide receiver Michael Thomas is now participating in seven on seven drills, while defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is limiting his activity as he seeks a new contract.

Meanwhile on the offensive line, Cesar Ruiz is receiving praise for how he’s developing. Here’s Andrus Peat’s take on the third year player….

A vote on a proposal to change the transfer rules allowing players an unlimited number of times they can transfer to another school has been postponed. The NCAA Division One Board of Directors wants to see more research on the proposal before taking a vote. They plan to meet again on August 31st.

Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu is finally back with the team after missing practices to attend to family matters. Mahtieu was at practice this morning. Not at practice for long today were rookie left tackle Trevor Penning and defensive tackle Malcolm Roach after they were involved in a scuffle. Penning has been involved in several shoving matches during the first week of training camp.

LSU players reported to fall camp today. The offensive line is the biggest question mark, but Coach Brian Kelly feels better about the position group than he did in the spring…

U-L Lafayette athletics director Doctor Bryan Maggard has received a one-year contract extension which means Maggard is now under contract through June 2027. Maggard was hired in 2017 and last season the Cajuns won a Sun Belt title in football, baseball, and softball, the only program in the country to win all three, and a bowl game….

Maggard says the school also raised more than 30-million dollars, their most successful year in fundraising.
