The Saints have traded fan favorite Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and a 2025 seventh round pick to the Eagles for three draft picks, a fifth round selection in 2023 and two sixth round picks in 2024. Gardner-Johnson is expected to start at safety for Philadelphia. He was looking for a new contract with the Saints and those talks reportedly broke down, which led to the trade.

It’s also cut down day as every NFL team needs to get its roster down to 53 players this afternoon. One of the cuts…third-string quarterback Ian Book. The Black and Gold are reportedly hoping to sign Book to their practice squad.

Whoever starts at quarterback for LSU on Sunday against Florida State will have a bunch of wide receivers to throw the football too. Coach Brian Kelly says he expects seven to eight receivers will play and there’s also a lot of versatility with the position group….

Kelly expects Malik Nabers will play on Sunday after missing last Saturday’s practice with a sprained ankle. Also, Jack Beche seems to be over his shin splits that caused him to miss a few practices earlier in camp.

Zachary, Westgate, Sterlington, Many and Homer are all ranked number one in their respective classes in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association preseason poll.

The Saints made a surprise trade today as they’ve reportedly sent safety Chaunce Gardner-Johnson to the Philadelphia Egles. New Orleans would receive the Eagles fifth round pick in 2023 and two sixth round picks in 2024. The Saints are sending Philly a seventh round pick in 2025. New Orleans and Gardner-Johnson reportedly could not reach terms on a long-term deal which resulted in the trade.

It’s possible Saints rookie offensive tackle Trevor Penning will start the season on injured reserve. Coach Dennis Allen was asked about Penning’s injury….

In other quarterback battles, Georgia Southern transfer Cam Ransom is listed as McNeese’s starting quarterback as the Cowboys prepare to visit Montana State. KPLC TV reports Virgina Tech transfer Knox Kadum is also expected to see snaps. Grambling Head Coach Hue Jackson is not ready to name a starter as the Tigers kick-off the season Saturday at Arkansas State. Jackson says he’s been impressed with true freshman Julian Calvez.

Another high school football season starts Thursday. According to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, Zachary is the number one team in Five-A, Westgate is number one in Four-A, Sterlington is the top ranked team in Three-A, Many has the top spot in Class Two-A, and Homer is ranked number one in One-A.

Seth Hall will replace Scott McDonald as ULM’s interim athletic director. The 34-year-old is a former member of the ULM cross country and track and field teams. He’s been the university’s chief strategy officer. The school hopes to find a permanent A-D by January.

We are now just six days away from the season opener. Cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse transferred in from Oklahoma State and the Shreveport native says he can’t wait to wear the Purple and Gold in New Orleans….

It looks like rookie offensive tackle Trevor Penning is headed for injured reserve. Allen said today that Penning has a significant toe injury. It’s been reported Penning tore a ligament in his toe in Friday night’s preseason finale.

The Cajuns are getting ready to take on Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. The Lions are the favorites to win the Southland and they have a new quarterback this year. Cephus Johnson the Third replaces two-time All-American Cole Kelley. Lions offensive coordinator Greg Stevens says Johnson’s athleticism provides them with an added dimension to their offense.

The Saints released six players yesterday to get the roster down to 74. Running back Abram Smith was one of the players waived. The undrafted rookie out of Baylor had a team-high 29 carries in the preseason, but only rushed for 90 yards. Smith’s departure leaves the Saints with four running backs, Alvin Kamara, Mark Ingram, Tony Jones and Dwayne Washington. Kirk Merritt is a wide receiver, who has also worked at running back during training camp.

The Saints looked ready for the regular season last night with a 27-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. L-A didn’t play its starters, which certainly helped New Orleans, who went with its first team to start the game. Jameis Winston was four for for with 59 yards passing in his first game back since suffering a season-ending knee injury last October. Back-up Andy Dalton was five for five for 73 yards. Mark Ingram got nine carries and rushed for 34 yards and two touchdowns.

But on Ingram’s first touchdown, rookie left tackle Trevor Penning suffered an injury and was carted off the field. Penning got the start, because veteran James Hurst has been out with an unknown injury. After the game. Coach Dennis Allen said Penning suffered a toe injury and Hurst will be back sooner than later.

The first regular season game is Sunday, September 11th as the Saints visit the Falcons.

LSU is scheduled to practice in Tiger Stadium this morning as they are eight days away from the season opener against Florida State. The Seminoles will kick-off their season today when they host Duquense. Coach Brian Kelly meets with the media again on Monday and we’ll find out then if he’s ready to announce a starting quarterback.

Louisiana Tech is less than a week away from its season opener as the Bulldogs will visit Missouri on Thursday night. Tech is a 19-point underdog.

A week from today, the Ragin Cajuns will host Southeastern Louisiana, ULM will be at Texas. Grambling is at Arkansas State as the Tigers begin the Hue Jackson era.

Also next Saturday, Northwestern State will make a long road trip to Montana. McNeese visits Montana State and Nicholls will be at South Alabama.

Tulane will open the season on Saturday by hosting U-Mass. The Green Wave is 16 and 24 versus F-B-s teams since opening their new on-campus stadium.

The Saints host the Los Angeles Chargers tonight in the preseason finale at the Superdome. New Orleans has 80 players on its roster and will have to get down to 53 for the regular season. Defensive end Cam Jordan has this advice for the guys who are on the bubble and might end up getting cut…

No word on if Quarterback Jameis Winston will play tonight. Rookie left tackle Trevor Penning should get a lot of snaps again tonight with James Hurst hurt. With Pete Werner dealing with a groin injury, several linebackers are looking to hold down his starting spot. Former Destrehan star Kirk Merritt will get a look at running back tonight after making a switch from wide receiver. Kick-off is at 7 PM.

LSU coach Brian Kelly had his first radio show last night and still no announcement on a starting quarterback. Garrett Nussmeier and Jayden Daniels are locked up in a tight battle. Kelly also said true freshman Will Campbell will start at left tackle and they’ll play four running backs, but John Emery Junior will reportedly be suspended for the first two games because of an academic suspension that’s carrying over from last year.

LSU plays Florida State a week from Sunday. The Seminoles have their first game tomorrow afternoon as they will host Duquense. There are a handful of games on the schedule for Week 0 including a contest involving an SEC team, Vanderbilt is at Hawaii.

Baton Rouge Judge Wilson Fields has ordered LSU to pay former offensive line coach James Cregg 492-thousand dollars for improperly firing him last year for allegedly violating NCAA rules. Cregg says there’s been no determination he broke the rules, but LSU plans to appeal as they say he held in-person meeting with recruits when face-to-face contact was prohibited because of COVID protocols.

It’s uncertain if Saints Quarterback Jameis Winston will play tomorrow night in the preseason finale against the Chargers. Winston, who is feeling much better after spraining his foot on August eighth, wants to play, but the final decision rests with head coach Dennis Allen and he’s not telling the media. Winston says he’s looking forward to showing he’s a better passer when it comes to throwing to receivers running intermediate routes…

There are spots on the depth chart to be won in this final preseason game. Last week, Tony Jones Junior made a case that he should be a back-up running back, but Kirk Merritt is expected to get a look after making a switch from wide receiver to running back.
