The Pelicans return to action tonight as they host the Hawks. The Pels have won their last two after losing ten straight behind 51 points over the last two games from sophomore guard Trey Murphy. New Orleans sits just one game above .500 in the midst of a tight race in the Western Conference to avoid the play-in tournament while Atlanta is even at 27-27 in 8th in the East. Starting Forward Brandon Ingram and Center Jonas Valanciunas are set to return tonight after missing Sunday’s matchup against the Kings. Tip-off in the Smoothie King Center is at 6:30.

While Nets All-star Guard Kyrie Irving makes his way to Dallas, a new young star has emerged in Brooklyn. Former LSU guard Cam Thomas scored 47 points in last night’s loss to the Clippers making him the youngest player in NBA history to score over 40 points in back-to-back games. This is nothing new for Thomas who led the SEC in points per game in his one season at LSU. Thomas will look to continue this hot streak as he steps into an expanded role in Irving’s absence. Thomas and the Nets will return to the hardwood tonight against the Suns.

 

There’s a difference in opinion on how to address the state’s speckled trout population which is at its lowest recorded level. The Senate and House Natural Resources Committee rejected a proposal to reduce the daily catch limit and one senator suggests the state should rebuild habitat instead. LDWF Assistant Secretary of Fisheries Patrick Banks understands their position”…

UL-Lafayette’s Jordan Brown has been named Sun-Belt player of the week for the third time this season. Brown averaged 21 points and 13 and a half rebounds per game last week as he led the Ragin’ Cajuns to two conference wins over Texas State and Marshall. The wins extend the Cajuns’ conference win streak to 10 as ULL and Southern Miss are tied for first place in the Sun-Belt at 10-2. The Cajuns and Golden Eagles will battle for first Thursday in Hattiesburg.

Northwestern State guard DeMarcus Sharp also received conference player of the week honors in the Southland conference. Sharp averaged 26 points, 5.5 rebounds, and three steals over two games last week on a 63% shooting percentage. He was a perfect six for six from beyond the arc in wins at Houston Christian and Lamar. Sharp earns the player of the week honors for the third time this season marking the fifth time by a Demon this year. Northwestern State returns to action Thursday at Texas A&M-Commerce

The Saints are expected to announce Joe Woods as the team’s new defensive coordinator today. Head Coach Dennis Allen is familiar with Woods. The two worked together for part of a season when Allen was the head coach of the Raiders in 2014. Woods has been an NFL coach for 19 seasons, five as a defensive coordinator. The last three seasons he was the D-C in Cleveland.

Former Saints Coach Sean Payton is expected to change the culture in Denver like he did in New Orleans. Last season, Denver allowed quarterback Russell Wilson to have his own personal coach in the building. Payton says that will not happen under his watch…

Payton is reportedly hiring Saints assistant offensive line coach Zach Streif to be his O-Line coach in Denver. Streif was on the Saints Super Bowl team and played 12 seasons in New Orleans under Payton.

It looks like former LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire will have a chance to play in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs have activated Edwards-Helaire from injured reserve. He hasn’t played since November 20th when he suffered a high ankle sprain. Edwards-Helaire has six touchdowns on the season.

The Ragin Cajuns men’s basketball team is on a ten-game winning streak and will visit Southern Miss on Thursday. Both teams are 10-and-2 in the Sun Belt.

Lafayette Christian quarterback Ju’Juan Johnson has committed to Colorado over the LSU Tigers and Florida. Johnson is expected to play cornerback at the next level and he’s rated as a four-star recruit.

The Pelicans and the LSU men’s basketball teams will try to end long losing streaks on Saturday. The Pels, who have lost ten in a row, will host the Lakers at 5 PM. New Orleans’ record has fallen below the .500 mark at 26-and-27. L-A is 25-and-28, but Anthony Davis is healthy again and they’ve won their last two.

The LSU men’s basketball team will host fourth ranked Alabama at 3 PM. The Tigers have lost nine in a row and that includes a 40-point defeat to the Crimson Tide on January 14th.

The Ragin Cajuns are looking for their tenth win in a row when they host Marshall on Saturday. U-L Lafayette is 9-and-2 in the Sun Belt, while the Thundering Herd are 8-and-3. ULM is 7-and-4 in the Sun Belt and they will host South Alabama at 2 PM. The Jaguars are 4-and-7 in league play.

Southeastern Louisiana hosts Texas A-and-M Corpus Christi in a game that will be televised by ESPN News on 11 AM Saturday.

Saints analyst Mike Detillier says the quarterback position is a top priority, so bringing in a veteran is likely and there could be a standout signal caller from the SEC late in the first round…

The third ranked LSU women’s basketball team was pushed to the limit last night but they remain undefeated as they defeated Georgia 82-77 in overtime to improve to 22-and-0. The Lady Tigers trailed by nine points early in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Angel Reese had her 22nd consecutive double-double, 23 points and 14 rebounds.

The Ragin Cajuns men’s basketball team won their ninth straight as U-L Lafayette topped Texas State 82-63. Greg Williams Junior had a game-high 23 points as he recorded his fourth straight 20 point game.

ULM’s Jamari Blackmon tied his career high of 35 points as the Warhawks dribbled past Coastal Carolina 83-70. Blackmon hit 5 three-pointers.

Louisiana Tech completed a regular season sweep of Rice for a third straight season as the Bulldogs defeated the Owls 80-72 to improve to 6-and-6 in Conference USA.

The Pelicans trailed by 31 points last night in Dallas as they lost their tenth straight game. AT least New Orleans made a game out of it as they lost by only five, 111 to 106. The ten game losing streak is the fifth longest in franchise history and they’ll host Lebron James and the Lakers tomorrow.

By gaining a first round pick in the Sean Payton trade, the Saints have seven picks in the N-F-L draft, three take place within the first 71 selections. Should New Orleans use some of those picks to move up in the first round. NFL analyst Mike Detillier says with so many needs, the Saints will need as many picks as possible…

The LSU men’s basketball team’s woes continued last night with an 87-77 loss to Missouri. KJ Williams and Derek Fountain both posted double-doubles while Adam Miller, Cam Hayes, Justice Hill, and Trae Hannibal all reach double figures scoring, but it wasn’t enough to get past a near-perfect night from Mizzou’s Kobe Brown who scored 26 points, hitting 10-of-11 shots. The Tigers are now 12th in the SEC and will host 4th-ranked Alabama Saturday.

The Pelicans landed in Dallas earlier today after winter weather delayed their departure from Denver after losing to the Nuggets Tuesday night. The Pels had less than 7 hours to prepare for an important matchup with the Mavericks, exactly what a team on a nine-game losing streak doesn’t need. New Orleans fell to 26-26 on the season since going 3-13 in 2023 and are now tenth in the Western Conference while the Mavs sit just a game ahead of them in fifth. The Pels will hope to bounce back on short notice against a Mavericks team without Christian Wood who’s been ruled out with a thumb injury. Tip-off is at 7:30.

The LSU women’s basketball team will look to keep their perfect season alive in Georgia tonight. The 15-and-8 Bulldogs are currently tied for 6th in the SEC and are projected as the last team into the NCAA tournament by Joe Leonardi’s Bracketology. Tip-off is tonight at 7:00
