LSU will play Michigan in the second round on Sunday night. The Wolverines defeated U-N-L-V 71-59 yesterday. Southeastern Louisiana lost in its first every appearance in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, 95-to-43 to second seeded Iowa.

The top ranked LSU baseball team opened SEC play last night with a nine to nothing win over Texas A-and-M. Paul Skenes struck out eleven in 6.1 innings for his fifth win on the season. Third baseman Tommy White drove in three runs.

The Ragin Cajuns trounced Arkansas State 15 to 4 to open Sun Belt play. U-L Lafayette scored seven runs in the first inning and Jake Hammond recorded a career-high ten strikeouts.

ULM lost in ten innings to Old Dominion five to three. Louisiana Tech topped Charlotte two to one. Jonathan Fincher pitched six strong innings.

Northwestern State defeated Little Rock nine to four. McNeese over Yale seven to one. Memphis defeated Southeastern Louisiana Four to three and Nebraska swept a doubleheader from Nicholls.

Grambling won over Southern eight to seven in 12 innings to open up SWAC play.

Bad loss for the Pelicans last night as they blew a double digit lead in the fourth quarter and fell to the Rockets 114 to 112. The same two teams will play again Sunday in Houston.

Williams spent the last two seasons in the Motor City and in 2022 he rushed for an NFL high 17 touchdowns. Williams signed a three-year contract with the Saints worth an estimated 12 million dollars.

With their playoff hopes fading, the Pelicans are in Houston this weekend. They’ll take on the Rockets tonight and Sunday. It begins a stretch of games where New Orleans will play teams that are not in the playoff hunt. Houston is 17-and-52, but the Pels are 10-and-23 since January 1st.

After leading Scotlandville to 14 consecutive boys basketball state championship game appearances, Carlos Sample has decided to step down. Sample won eight titles during that 14 year run.

The LSU women’s basketball team will begin their NCAA Tournament run this afternoon in the P-MAC. The Lady Tigers are a three-seed with a 28-2 record and second-place finish in the SEC. They came up short in the SEC tournament, blowing a 17-point lead to Tennessee, but will hope to bounce back against 14-seeded Hawaii. All-American forward Angel Reese has led the Tigers this season, and Coach Kim Mulkey says she’s elevated her game after the tough loss…

The Saints have started the new league year by replenishing the interior D-line, signing chiefs tackle Khalen Saunders and Jets tackle Nathan Sheperd. They also made a splash by signing the league leader in rushing touchdowns last year, Detroit running back Jamaal Williams to a three year 12 million dollar deal.

On the first day of the new league year, the Saints moved quickly to rebuild their D-Line by signing a pair of defensive tackles. New Orleans has reportedly signed Kansas City’s Khalen Saunders and the New York Jets’ Nathan Shepherd. Shepherd is 29-years-old and had a career-high in tackles with 27 last season. While Saunders is 26 years old and in 2022 he had career-high 3.5 sacks for the Super Bowl champs.

New Orleans has also reportedly signed free agent running back Jamaal Williams, who led the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns last season. Williams also rushed for 1,066 yards for the Lions last year.

And in a social media post, Saints Q-B Jameis Winston says he’s still a championship caliber starting quarterback but getting healthy and staying healthy is his number one priority, which is why he’s re-signed for one more year in New Orleans to be Derek Carr’s back-up.

Today marks the official beginning of the free agency period and the Saints are busy rebuilding their defensive line. ESPN is reporting the Saints are expected to sign Jets defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd, who has played in 73 games over the last five seasons. New Orleans has also reportedly reached an agreement with Chiefs defensive tackle Khalen Saunders on a three-year deal. He’s 324-pounds but moves well for his size.

Wide receiver Michael Thomas is returning for at least one more season with the Saints as he’s agreed to a restructured contract. Thomas returns to an offensive scheme he’s thrived in and an opportunity to earn $15 million with incentives. Luke Johnson of The Advocate says the deal protects the Saints and will be more than worth it, even if a fraction of the old Thomas returns…

The top ranked LSU baseball team got home runs from Tommy White and Gavin Dugas and the pitching staff held the UNO Privateers to three hits in a 16 to nothing win last night in Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers have won 11 in a row heading into SEC play this Friday at Texas A-and-M.

Louisiana Tech and the Ragin Cajuns also posted shutout victories last night, while Northwestern State defeated ULM five to one. Nicholls lost to Mississippi State. The Cajuns face the Bulldogs tonight in Biloxi at 5 PM.

The Pelicans ended a four game homestand last night with a non competitive loss to the Lakers as Anthony Davis had 35 points and 17 rebounds in Los Angeles 123-108 win over New Orleans.

As part of new McNeese men’s basketball coach Will Wade’s contract, he’ll be suspended the first five games of the season. Wade was fired from LSU a year ago over alleged recruiting violations.

The Saints are bringing back quarterback Jameis Winston and wide receiver Michael Thomas on contracts that are more salary cap friendly. Locked on Saints Podcast Host Ross Jackson says Winston remaining in New Orleans is a surprise, but it’s a good thing for the Saints…

The Saints announced former All-Pro WR Michael Thomas will return on a one-year incentive heavy deal in 2023. After an NFL record setting season in 2019 and a 5 year, 100 million dollar contract, Thomas has missed most of the last three seasons with injury. The one-year “prove-it” deal offers major financial incentives given Thomas is able to produce in more than just a handful of games. On the Saints’ side, they’ll avoid the over 6o million dollars in guaranteed money had Thomas been on the roster and appeared in just four games. The team is able to clear up cap space with the deal, and Thomas will have an opportunity to return to his former elite status with the Black and Gold now alongside new quarterback Derek Carr.

The Pelicans will host the Lakers tonight in a crucial matchup in the Western Conference play-in race. The Lakers and Pels are in a three-way tie along with OKC for 9th in the West just half a game behind the Mavericks and 2.5 games back from the 5th place Warriors. Brandon Ingram is still listed as questionable with an ankle injury.  The Pels are 22-12 in the Smoothie King Center and will be relying on their home court advantage without Zion Williamson and Jose Alvarado. The LSU baseball team will look to extend its 10 game win streak tonight as they host UNO. The Privateers are 11-5 this season and have won four straight, but the top-ranked Tigers are off to their best start to the season since 2015 and are looking to get one more win before SEC play. First pitch at Alex Box is set for 6:30.

Louisiana Tech Baseball kicks off a two game mid-week series against Air Force tonight. The Bulldogs were swept in Fayetteville this weekend but will hope to bounce back against an Air Force team coming off a two game skid of their own. 

Northwestern St and ULM will face off in Natchitoches in the 229th all-time meeting between the programs tonight . NSU holds the series record 115-113 after a 3-1 win over the Warhawks in Monroe last week.

UL-Lafayette wraps up its 8-game homestand against Jackson State tonight. The Cajuns start a five-game week at 6:00 tonight.

Former LSU basketball head coach Will Wade signed a 5 year 1.175 million dollar contract to be the new Head Basketball Coach at McNeese. The contract includes a 5 game suspension to open the 2023 -2024 season and other off-campus recruiting restrictions. . The self-imposed suspension and restrictions will look to get ahead of any NCAA sanctions. Wade’s contract will increase the first three seasons with performance-based incentives. Should Wade look to leave the program, there is a million dollar buyout after the first year, decreasing to $500k and $250k in the second and third years respectively.
