The Louisiana Wildlife Commission has begun the process of establishing black bear hunting season. It would take place in December of 2024 for 16 days in northeast Louisiana. It would only be open to ten hunters who are chosen through a lottery. The state has not had a black bear hunting season since the late 1980s, so LDWF large carnivore program manager John Hanks says lottery winners will have to undergo training first…

The Pelicans are now 4-and-1 after beating the Detroit Pistons 125 to 116. New Orleans won the game without Zion Williamson, who was resting and Brandon Ingram who has a sore knee. CJ McCollum stepped up again as the 32-year-old had 33 points.

At Saints practice today…wide receiver Michael Thomas and offensive lineman Andrus Peat were full participants after they were limited on Wednesday. Thomas because of an illness, Peat because of an ankle injury. Taysom Hill, James Hurst and Demario Davis were limited. The Saints host the Chicago Bears this Sunday.

Zion Williamson will not play tonight as the Pelicans host the Pistons. It’s the second game of a back-to-back. New Orleans won in Oklahoma City last night 110 to 106 as the Pels fought back from a 22 point first half deficit. CJ McCollum had 29 points, 22 of them came in the second half.

Texas Rangers fans are celebrating the team’s first World Series championship. Texas took down Arizona four games to one. The Rangers won all 11 games they played on the road. Former LSU Tiger Josh Smith will get a World Series ring. Former McNeese pitcher Grant Anderson is on the Rangers 40-man roster.

The NCAA has denied the wavier request from LSU men’s basketball player Jalen Cook. The transfer from Tulane is seeking a waiver, because this is the second time he’s transferred during his college career. LSU says it’s submitting some new information and hopes the NCAA will grant a hardship waiver.

Speaking of the Tigers, the first edition of the College Football Playoff rankings are out and LSU is the highest two loss team at 14th. Tulane is the only other team in Louisiana to make the rankings at 24th. The Green wave are currently the highest ranked group of 5 team which would put them in their 2nd consecutive New Year’s Six Bowl.

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia in order to face the 8 and 0 Liberty Flames. This task will not be easy, especially since Liberty is the top team in Conference USA right now in almost all offensive and defensive categories. Grambling’s Sundiata Anderson has received SWAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. He had 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in the Tigers two touchdown win over Bethune Cookman.

Northwestern State defensive tackle Travon Jones has started a petition on change-dot-org in the hopes he can get a large number of signatures to convince Northwestern’s administration to let them play again this season. University President Doctor Marcus Jones made the controversial decision last week to end the season prematurely, citing the mental health of the players following the fatal shooting of safety Ronnie Caldwell. Travon Jones says most of the team wants to keep playing.

The Sugar Bowl is actively seeking money from the business community to make sure the annual bowl game remains one of the upper tier bowls when the college football playoff expands to 12 teams next year. Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley says the Sugar Bowl is only guaranteed to host a quarterfinal game following the 2024 and 25 seasons, beyond that it’s unknown…

ULM fell to 0-5 in the Sun Belt with a 34-24 loss to Arkansas State. Tulane topped Rice 30-28. Grambling and Southern both won, while Nicholls fell to Southeast Missouri 35-31.
