LSU received its first major commitment from a player in the transfer portal as safety Jardin Gilbert announced he’s committed to playing for the Tigers next season. Gilbert appeared in 23 games for Texas A-and-M and had 79 tackles and two interceptions. He’s from Baton Rouge and played his high school football at University High. But Sage Ryan, who started nine games in 2023 for the Tigers, has entered the transfer portal. The former Lafayette Christian star had 35 tackles at cornerback.

The Ragin Cajuns will face Jacksonville State in tomorrow’s R-and-L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Kick-off is set for 1:15. U-L Lafayette Coach Michael Desormeaux says his team has been preparing to play a good team, one that has won 17 games over the last two seasons…

Motivation is a big factor in who wins bowl games, and Coach Michael Desormeaux says his guys should be excited to play….

This is the Cajuns seventh appearance in the New Orleans Bowl and they are five and one.

And tomorrow night, it’s the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl in Shreveport between Texas Tech and California. The Red Raiders are three point favorites and they have one of the better running backs in the country. Senior Tajh Brooks has rushed for 14-hundred yards and nine TDs.

LSU defensive tackle Fitzgerald West has entered the transfer portal. The former Lafayette Christian star has appeared in seven games over the last two seasons.

Saints receiver Chris Olave missed his second straight practice yesterday as New Orleans gets ready to host the New York Giants on Sunday. Olave is nursing an ankle injury. He’s the team’s leading receiver with 72 catches for 918 yards and four touchdowns.

LSU wide receiver Brian Thomas Junior has one more year of eligibility left but there’s a good chance he declares for the NFL draft after catching 60 passes for 1,079 yards and 15 touchdowns. Draft analyst and WWL’s Mike Detillier says Thomas could be a first round pick, selected somewhere between 18 and 22…

Brandon Ingram erupted for a season-high 40 points last night as the Pelicans started a three-game road trip with a 142 to 122 win over the Washington Wizards. New Orleans improved to 14-11 on the season and they’ll be at Charlotte tomorrow night.

With Will Wade on the sidelines for the first time this season, McNeese trounced Southern Miss 67-48. DJ Richards scored a career-high 24 points.

The Cajuns won their 19th straight home game as U-L Lafayette dribbled past Eastern Kentucky 73-62. Themus Fulks had a game-high 21 points.

LSU men’s basketball trailed by four at halftime to Alabama State but went on to win 74-56.

LSU’s 2024 football schedule was unveiled last night and the Tigers will close out the regular season at home against Oklahoma. The Tigers will host Alabama November ninth. The SEC slate starts on September 14th at South Carolina.

Longtime assistant coach in the SWAC Terrence Graves, will get his opportunity to lead the Southern Jaguars. Graves says he’s a builder of champions…

Testimony is underway in a federal courtroom in Baton Rouge in former LSU associate athletic director Sharon Lewis’ 50-million dollar lawsuit against LSU. Lewis claims LSU athletic officials retaliated against her because she tried to report sexual misconduct allegations against former LSU coach Les Miles and running backs coach Frank Wilson. Tiger Rag Editor Todd Horne says the first witness in the trial, a former student worker in the recruiting office, was emotional when retelling a story that Wilson kissed her and also attempted to give her gifts…

Southern is removing the interim tag from Terrence Graves’ title as the 53-year-old will be the new head coach of the Jaguars. Graves is a longtime coach in the SWAC and this is his second stint with Southern.

Texas A-and-M has hired longtime former LSU strength and conditioning coach Tommy Moffit.

The seventh ranked LSU women’s basketball team defeated McNeese last night 133 to 44. The 133 points is the most in a single game in program history and the margin of victory was the largest in program history.

In men’s hoops…Louisiana Tech downed Southeastern Louisiana 89-60, Sam Houston edged ULM 63-62 and Boise State blew out Northwestern State 95-54.

Coach Will Wade makes his long-awaited return to the sidelines tonight as his McNeese team hosts Southern Miss in Lake Charles. The former LSU coach has not coached a game since March of 2022 and he was suspended for the first 10 games of this season because of recruiting violations that led to his firing in Baton Rouge. Wade is fiery on the sidelines, but after some time away, he might be a little calmer…

The Saints will face a good running back this Sunday when Saquon Barkley and the Giants visit the Dome. New York defeated Green Bay 24-22 last night and Barkley rushed for 86 yards and had two touchdowns. The Giants have won three in a row and they are now 5-and-8 on the season.

In college hoops, Louisiana Tech looks for its fourth straight win when the Bulldogs host Southeastern Louisiana tonight. The Lions are two and seven. Also tonight, ULM is at Sam Houston and Northwestern State visits Boise State.

It’s game week for the Ragin Cajuns as they will play Jacksonville State on Saturday in the New Orleans Bowl. U-L Lafayette will make its seventh New Orleans Bowl appearance on Saturday. There’s some grumbling among the fan base about another bowl game in New Orleans, but Coach Michael Desormeaux says the players are excited

After suffering a 44 point loss to the Lakers last Thursday, the Pelicans responded by beating the Minnesota Timberwolves 121 to 107 last night. Zion Williamson scored a season-high 36 points.

In Lafayette, the demolition of the west side of Cajun Field has started. The school is replacing the west side of the football stadium with 34 suites, 40 loge boxes, 524 club-level seats, and an expanded chairback section. The 65-million-dollar project is expected to be completed for the 2025 season. Coach Michael Desormeaux says it’s an exciting time for the program…
