The LSU football team is in the first week of spring practice and one of the major storylines is Harold Perkins moving back to inside linebacker. The Tigers planned to play him at inside linebacker last season, but scrapped the idea after the season opening loss to Florida State. In college basketball last night, Louisiana Tech lost its first place Conference USA showdown to Sam Houston 72 to 66. The Bulldogs made only three three-pointers on the night.

The Ragin Cajuns beat Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt Tournament 80-66 and they’ll play Arkansas State on Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Saints receiver Michael Thomas is expected to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins on Wednesday. Thomas is one of the most decorated receivers in Saints history, but Locked on Saints Podcast Host Ross Jackson says Thomas’s availability and relationship with the team deteriorated after suffering an avoidable injury early in the 2020 season…

Thomas has only appeared in 20 games the last four seasons.

Saints defensive back Tyrann Mathieu is not going anywhere. The Honey Badger has signed a new two-year contract that keeps him with his hometown team through 2025. In the past two seasons for the Saints, Mathieu has started all 34 games and intercepted seven passes.

The Michael Thomas saga in New Orleans has officially come to an end as the Saints are expected to release the 2016 3rd round pick. The former NFL Offensive Player of the Year will become an unrestricted free agent after an injury riddled and drama-filled past few seasons in New Orleans. The dominant edge rusher earned ALL-SEC first team honors his freshman season racking up 7.5 sacks but seemingly took a step back in year 2. The  Conference-USA Basketball Regular Season champion could be decided tonight in Ruston as Louisiana Tech hosts Sam Houston. The Bulldogs and Bearkats have spent much of the season tied at the top of the conference standings and come into the final 2 games of the season with a tied 11-and-3 conference record. A win tonight could be the difference for a regular season title for Louisiana Tech which second-year Head Coach Talvin Hester says would be a big accomplishment for his program…

The Saints and safety Tyrann Mathieu have agreed to a new 2-year, $13 million deal. The New Orleans native was already under contract through the 2024 season but the move will guarantee the defensive leader for another year in New Orleans.

Jeff Duncan who covers the Saints for NOLA-dot-com and Fox 8 Television says it’s a matter of when not if that the Black and Gold will release Michael Thomas. He expects the move to go down prior to the start of the new league calendar, which begins on March 13th. Thomas was the NFL’s offensive player of the year in 2019, but since that time he’s only caught 95 passes over the last four seasons.

In a salary cap move, the Bills have released former LSU Tiger and Shreveport native Tre’Davious White. The move will save Buffalo ten-million dollars against the salary cap. White is a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback but suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in week four of last season.

IN the high school boys basketball playoffs yesterday….Crescent City, Liberty, St. Thomas More and Wossman and Iowa advanced to state championship games. Tonight Division One-select semis….Natchitoches Central versus Ruston and Ponchatoula against New Iberia.

Gavin Guidry was the winning pitcher, Nate Ackenhausen picked up the save by striking out all three hitters in the ninth. Kade Anderson struck out a season-high 13 in five innings. The Tigers will host Xavier this weekend.

Xavier handed Louisiana Tech its first loss of the season as the Musketeers defeated the Bulldogs six to four last night. Tech is now 12-1 and will host Southern Miss this weekend.

The Ragin Cajuns blanked Northwestern State three to nothing last night. Lee Amedee hit his first home run. Tulane won its sixth straight as the Green Wave defeated Grambling nine to four. McNeese defeated Louisiana Christian six to five in ten innings.

Arkansas led for nearly the entire game last night in Fayetteville and defeated LSU 94 to 83. The Tigers fall to 8-9 in the SEC and close out the regular season on Saturday at home against Missouri.

McNeese completed the regular season with an 81-57 win over UNO. The Cowboys are 28-3 heading into the Southland Tournament. Northwestern State lost in three overtime 83 to 80 to Texas A-and-M Commerce.

High school playoffs..Iowa edged Brusly in the division two nonselect and will play Wossman for a state title Friday night.

Louisiana Tech can claim at least a share of a Conference USA regular season title with a win over Sam Houston tonight. The Bearkats beat the Bulldogs 81 to 77 in Huntsville in January. Tech Coach Talvin Hester is looking forward to the rematch…

Louisiana Tech looks to improve to 13-0 when they host Xavier tonight. The Bulldogs beat the Muskateers 11 to 3 last night.

Also tonight, the Ragin Cajuns visit Northwestern State. Both teams have a losing record. And Grambling visits Tulane.

Last night, the Pelicans started off a three game road trip with a 139 to 98 win over Toronto. New Orleans visits Philadelphia on Friday.

The ULM men’s basketball’s season is over after losing to Coastal Carolina 75 to 71 in the Sun Belt Tournament. The Warhawks finish the year with an 11 and 19 record. Coastal advances to play the Ragin Cajuns on Thursday.

At the boys basketball high school playoffs…Marksville will play for a state championship for the first time since 2005 after beating Richwood 60-52. Marksville will face Red River who downed Donaldsonville 56-45. The Bulldogs from Coushatta are seeking their first state title since 1999.

The second ranked LSU baseball team heads to Hammond tonight to face Southeastern Louisiana who is off to a 9-4 start under first year head coach Bobby Barbier. The Tigers will start freshman left-hander Kade Anderson on the mound and expect Coach Jay Johnson to keep rotating players in and out of the line-up….

Last night. Southeastern defeated Alcorn State 12 to 2 in seven innings. Louisiana Tech improved to 12-0 on the season with an 11 to three win over Xavier. Jorge Corona hit a two run homer and drove in three runs on the night. Dalton Davis and Ethan Bates also drove in three runs.

ULM was a big win over Little Rock 11 to 1. Joe Haggard homered as the Warhawks have won five of their last six. Tulane outscored Nicholls 14 to 12.

LSU returned to the football practice field today for Spring Practice. With the departure of Heisman-winning Quarterback Jayden Daniels, Sophomore Garrett Nussmeier enters spring as the starting quarterback. He’ll face competition from Vanderbilt transfer A.J. Swann and redshirt freshman Rickie Collins. The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander says getting Nussmeier to be more accurate will be a focus during the spring…

LSU Forward Angel Reese was named SEC Player of the Year while Guard Mikaylah Williams was named SEC Freshman of the year. Williams joined center Aalyah Del Rosario on the All-Freshman First team, and Reese was joined by junior guard Aneesha Morrow on the All-SEC First Team. Guard Flau’Jae Johnson was named to the All-SEC Second team. The 2nd-seeded Tigers will Tip-off their SEC Tournament run Friday at 5:00 versus the Winner of Arkansas and Auburn.

The Ragin Cajuns softball team ended reigning National Champion Oklahoma’s NCAA Record 71-game win streak dating back to February of last year. The historic win is one that proves the talent and potential of a Cajuns team which has struggled thus far. Coach Gerry Glasco says they need to be more consistent…

The Pelicans return to action tonight in Toronto against the short-handed Raptors. The 23-and-38 Raptors will be without All-star Forward Scottie Barnes as well as forward Bruce Brown and Center Jakob Poeltl. The 5th-place Pelicans will look to seize the opportunity to build momentum in a tight Western conference playoff race just a game-and-a-half out of the play-ins with 20 games left in the season. New defensive coordinator Blake Baker will begin installing his system and linebacker Harold Perkins will move back to inside linebacker. The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander says Baker probably wants Perkins to play a similar role that Ty’Ron Hopper played at Missouri last season…

LSU men’s basketball coach Matt McMahon has suspended guard Jalen Cook. McMahon says Cook has failed to meet the standards that he has put in place for the program. Cook has missed the last five games because of a leg injury. The Tigers will be at Arkansas tomorrow night.

ULM plays Coastal Carolina in the opening round of the Sun Belt Tournament at 5 PM in Pensacola.

Oklahoma’s loss, means LSU softball is the last team still undefeated in the country. The fourth ranked Tigers are 19-0 and they’ll begin SEC play this weekend at Kentucky.

LSU right handed pitcher Luke Holman is the SEC pitcher of the week for striking out 12 hitters on Friday in a win over Texas. Louisiana Tech’s Cole McConnell is the Conference USA hitter of the week after collecting eight hits and driving in eight runs in four games last week. The Bulldogs host Xavier for a two-game mid-week series starting tonight.

McNeese cut down the nets last night after beating Houston Christian 87 to 69. The Cowboys are Southland champs and they just completed a perfect record at home this season.

Nicholls clinched a bye in the Southland Tournament with a 68-62 win over Northwestern State. Southeastern Louisiana won its 10th conference game with a 71-56 win at UIW.

Tonight the Pelicans begin a three game road trip in Toronto. New Orleans is 5th place in the West. The Raptors are 15-games under the 500 mark.

Spring football begins for the LSU Tigers today. They are thin at defensive tackle as Mekhi Wingo, Maason Smith, and Jordan Jefferson are preparing for the NFL draft. Jacobian Guillory and Jalen Lee are the only returning defensive tackles. JUCO transfer Shone Washington is expected to participate in spring football and the Advocate’s Wilson Alexander says an offensive linemen will switch sides to provide added depth…

At the boys state basketball playoffs…Avoyelles Charter defeated Rapides 58-46 in the Division Five select semifinals. The Vikings will be defending their title on Friday and they’ll play J-S Clark. who defeated Epsicopal School Acadiana 62-43.

In Division Five non-select, Anacoco defeated Gibsland Coleman 50 to 41. The Indians will play defending state champs on Friday in the title game. Zwolle defeated Negreet 61-51.

The ninth ranked LSU women’s basketball team completed the regular season on Sunday with a 77-56 win over Kentucky. It was the Lady Tigers eighth straight win. Angel Reese had 22 points and 14 rebounds and she was honored at halftime for Senior Day. Reese says it’s been a long four years of college basketball

LSU men’s basketball coach Matt McMahon announced today that Jalen Cook is suspended from the team for failure to meet the standards of the program. Cook is averaging 16 points a game, but has not played since February 13th because of a hamstring injury. The Tigers are 8-8 in the SEC and at Arkansas Wednesday.

The Sun Belt men’s basketball tournament gets underway tomorrow in Pensacola, Florida. ULM will face Coastal Carolina and the winner of that game gets the Ragin Cajuns on Thursday. U-L Lafayette will have to win four games in order to win the Sun Belt tourney. They are the defending tournament champs. Coach Bob Marlin says previous success at the tourney should pay off this week…
