Former LSU star Paul Skenes got a no decision in Pittsburgh’s five to three win over Houston last night. Skenes went six innings, allowed one earned run and struck out six. He now has 103 strikeouts in 13 starts in the Major Leagues.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and wide receiver Kyren Lacy have been named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, which goes to the most outstanding player in college football. Joe Burrow is the only one to win the award from LSU.

Grambling State quarterback Myles Crawley has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2024 Stats Perform Walter Payton Award. The redshirt-senior from Georgia threw for 23-hundred yards and 16 touchdowns. Nicholls running back Jaylon Spears is also on the Walter Payton Award preseason watch list. The former Brother Martin star had over 13-hundred all-purpose yards and nine touchdowns last season.

Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss have agreed to play each other in football four times from 2029 to 2033. The first game will be in Ruston on September 15th, 2029. The two schools were previously rivals in Conference USA.

2022 Saints first-round pick Trevor Penning has had a slow start to his career, riddled with injury and finds himself battling for the starting right tackle spot. The Northern Iowa product says he learned a lot from working with former Saints All-Pro and current Dolphins left tackle Terron Armstead this offseason…

Saints defensive end Chase Young participated in his first reps in an 11 on 11 setting on Monday and Coach Dennis Allen says he likes where the pass rusher is at after undergoing neck surgery earlier in the offseason. Veteran cornerback Marshon Lattimore remains out with a hip flexor injury.

Former LSU beach volleyball stars Kristen Nuss and Tayrn Kloth improved to 2-and-0 in pool play at the Paris Olympics with a 21-16, 21,16 win over Australia. The number two seeded team in Olympic tournament will conclude pool play on Thursday afternoon against China.

Former LSU star Paul Skenes received a no-decision in last night’s start against Houston. Skenes allowed one earned run in six innings and struck out six, including former LSU star Alex Bregman. But Bregman also got a hit off of Skenes. Pittsburgh ended up winning the game five to three.

The Saints put on the pads for the first time at training camp today in Irvine, California today.  One of the early standouts of camp has been veteran linebacker Willie Gay who won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs last season. Gay has had to learn a new defensive scheme but says camp comes down to the basics…

Defensive end Chase Young participated in the team portion of practice for the first time today as he makes his return from a neck injury.

One of the questions heading into the season is the role the versatile Taysom Hill will play in new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak’s offense. Hill admits it’s tough even for him to tell until you get to game week…

A pair of former LSU stars will face off tonight as the Pirates visit the Astros. Houston’s Alex Bregman is batting .254 on the season with 14 homers and 51 RBI. He’ll try to get the better of Pirates rookie sensation Paul Skenes. Skenes has a 1.93 ERA with 97 strikeouts.

The Pelicans signed center Trey Jemison off waivers over the weekend. Jemison spent last season with the Wizards and Grizzlies where he averaged nearly 7 points and 5 rebounds in 25 games.

Nicholls senior offensive lineman Evan Roussel headlines the second-team offense for the Colonels. Nicholls Junior Jaylon Spears earned the second-team All Purpose spot.

Former LSU Beach Volleyball stars Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss will return to action today at 3:00 against Australia. They won their last match against the Canadians 2 sets to none. The Australian duo is the only other undefeated team left in the four-team pool after winning their first match against China 2-1. Today’s winner will take sole possession of first with one match remaining. The top two finishers at the conclusion of pool play will earn a guaranteed spot in the knockout rounds.

The US currently leads the Olympic medal race with 12 total, but their 3 golds rank 5th at the games.

The 32-year-old signed a new two-year contract in May and winning a Super Bowl for his hometown team remains his number one goal.

The Saints had yesterday off. We’ll see if cornerback Marshawn Lattimore returns to practice today. Lattimore left practice early on Friday with a hip flexor injury and did not practice on Saturday.

The Saints announced the signing of a couple of offensive linemen, including veteran Jesse Davis, who has appeared in 95 NFL games and has made 72 starts, most of those came during the 2017 to 2021 seasons with the Dolphins. Guard Tremayne Anchrum Junior has also been added to the roster. He’s appeared in 31 games since he was selected in the 7th round by the Los Angeles Rams in 2020. Tackle Justin Herron has been placed on injured reserve.

Warren Easton offensive lineman Jalan Chapman has announced his commitment to LSU. Chapman also had offers from Alabama, Oregon and U-S-C. He’s a 2026 recruit and the third from New Orleans in that class, McDonogh 35’s Jakai Anderson and Edna Karr defensive lineman Richard Anderson. Chapman is ranked as the 17th best player in Louisiana’s Class of 2026 according to 247 sports.

At the Olympics…LSU star gymnast Aleah Finegan, who is competing for the Phillipeans did not make it to Thursday’s all-around final. She fell on the balance beam.

Former LSU beach volleyball stars Kristen Nuss znd Taryn Kloth compete against Australia at 3 PM our time.

The Astros fell into a first place tie with the Mariners in the American League West after Seattle swept the hapless Chicago White Sox. The Astros lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers six to two. Former Ragin Cajun star Spencer Arrighetti struck out eight over six innings and allowed three runs, but suffered the loss.

The Saints have missed the playoffs the last three years and they are coming off a 9-and-8 season, which was not good enough to win the mediocre NFC South. Linebacker Demario Davis says it’s up to the players to get the team back into postseason…

Saints backup quarterback Jake Haener is participating in training camp in southern California even though he’s been diagnosed with a rare form of skin cancer. He spoke with reporters with a bandage on his face. Haener hopes to get more answers on his condition when he meets with doctors next Thursday.

Friday was a good day for Derek Carr as he connected on most of his passes during seven on seven drills and he hooked up with Cedric Wilson and Chris Olave in team drills.

LSU football is hosting some of the top recruits in the country as part of Bayou Splash. The nation’s number one safety in the Class of 2025 Jonah Williams of Galveston, Texas is in Baton Rouge for the weekend. The top defensive lineman in the Class of 2026. Jahkeem Stewart from St. Aug in New Orleans is also on the guest list.

31 current and former LSU athletes will compete for 20 different countries at the Paris Olympics kicking off today. Headlining the US team is world-champion sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson. Richardson set an NCAA record for the 100 meter in her only season at LSU, becoming one of the 10 fastest women in history as a 19-year-old. She qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 but was unable to compete after a failed drug-test. Lowe says there’s no doubt Richardson can bring home gold…

The Olympic opening ceremony begins at 12:30 today. Richardson’s preliminary 100m is set for early Friday August 2.

The US Women’s National Soccer Team are already off to a hot start in France with a 3-0 victory over Zambia in their first contest of the games. They’re tied atop their group with Germany who they’ll face Sunday at 2:00 P.M.

The Saints first preseason action is August 10 against the Cardinals. Training camp at UC-Irvine is closed to the public, but the Saints will hold an open practice at Tulane’s Yulman Stadium August 20th with tickets going on sale July 30.

Undrafted rookie defensive end Trajan Jeffcoat will not have to undergo surgery after being carted off with a dislocated elbow at practice yesterday.

It’s a big recruiting weekend on the LSU campus as the Tigers are hosting some of the top recruits in the country, including the nation’s number one safety Jonah Williams from Galveston, Texas.

The Summer Olympics get underway today in Paris and there are 35 athletes in the Games that have ties to Louisiana, 31 of them are either current or former LSU athletes. One of those star athletes is former LSU pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis, a big favorite to defend the Gold Medal he won for Sweden in the 2021 Tokyo Games….

That’s LSU Senior Associate Sports Information Director Kent Lowe. There are 14 former and current LSU track and field athletes competing for eight different countries. Sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson is a favorite to win the 100 meters.

Northwestern State has set game times for their home football games. The home opener on September seventh against Prairie View will kick off at 6 PM, so will the Weber State game on September 21st. Texas A-and-M Commerce and Lamar are two o’ clock kick-offs and McNeese on November 16th is at 1 PM.

U-L Lafayette football coach Mike Desormeaux is hoping to improve from back-to-back 6-and-7 seasons in his third year as head coach. The Cajuns will enter preseason camp with a battle for starting quarterback between Ben Woolridge and Chandler Fields. Fields finished as the starter last year and Desormeaux says the former Rummel standout seems determined to have a great senior season…

Former LSU star Angel Reese will join, Unrivaled, a new 3-on-3 Women’s basketball league. The league was founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier with the goal of becoming the highest paying women’s sports league in history, paying each of its players a salary of at least $100,000. The Saints began training camp yesterday as they prepare for the 2024 season. Linebacker Demario Davis has been an All-Pro and leader on one of the NFL’s top defenses since he arrived in New Orleans in 2017, but at 35-years-old some fans question how long he can be one of the league’s top defenders. Davis says humility has been key to his longevity…

Training camp at UC-Irvine is closed to the public this year, but the Saints will be hosting open practice at Tulane’s Yulman Stadium August 20th at 7 PM. Tickets go on sale Tuesday July 30th.

Undrafted rookie defensive end Trajan Jeffcoat was carted off with an elbow injury at practice today. The Arkansas and Missouri product had a good shot of making the team and adding depth to a shallow defensive-line room. The severity of the injury is not yet known.

Saints running back Alvin Kamara is seeking a new contract, but does not plan on holding out during training camp. Kamara is signed through the 2025 season, but next year’s money is not guaranteed. The Saints could wait to see how Kamara performs this year after averaging less than four yards a carry last season.

Kamara turns 29 today.

It will be a big recruiting weekend on the LSU campus as the Tigers are hosting some of the top recruits in the country. U-L Lafayette’s Michael Desormeaux is set to begin his third season as the head coach of the Ragin Cajuns. U-L is coming off back-to-back six and seven campaigns and Desormeaux wants to get back to having a powerful rushing attack…
