There were also large fires in Livingston and Webster Parishes. Caddo Parish is under a strict burn ban due to severe drought and high wildfire risks there.

A state lawmaker has filed a bill aimed at putting a stop to school threats. Pineville Representative Mike Johnson’s bill would increase the penalties for terrorizing and menacing schools – and parents would be held financially responsible. He says under his bill, all students will know about the state law and the consequences surrounding it – all in a way that they can understand.

A year-long narcotics investigation in Terrebonne Parish has resulted in multiple arrests and the largest methamphetamine seizure in the history of the sheriff’s office. Lt. Blake Tabor says those arrested range in ages 25 to 59.

With students posting threats against schools on social media in increasing numbers year after year, one state lawmaker has filed a bill aimed at putting a stop to it. Pineville Representative Mike Johnson’s bill would increase the penalty for terrorizing a school to 15-thousand dollars or up to 15 years in prison, and parents would be held financially responsible. Johnson says there would be certain instances where parents could face even more severe consequences.

Johnson says under his bill, all students will know about the state law and the consequences surrounding it – all in a way that they can understand.

A year-long narcotics investigation in Terrebonne Parish has resulted in six arrests and the largest methamphetamine seizure in the history of the sheriff’s office, approximately 70 pounds. Lt. Blake Tabor says the coordinated operation also resulted in the recovery of significant quantities of other dangerous narcotics…

American Airlines adds an additional non-stop round-trip flight between Monroe Regional Airport and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Monroe Regional Airport Director Charles Butcher says because of all the people traveling between the two cities for the Meta data center in Richland Parish and other projects, locals were getting squeezed out of the seats on the three existing daily round trips to and from DFW.

Dry and windy conditions has sparked several grass and wilfdfires. Separate fires have burned 40 acres or more in Natchitoches and Caddo Parish. The situation got so bad in St. Tammany Parish that I-12 was closed for several hours yesterday because of all of the smoke.

A federal appeals court has upheld a Louisiana law requiring the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms. Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says this by no means ends the case as the ACLU is expected to appeal the decision…

The ACLU says the displaying of the Ten Commandments in public classrooms violates the separation of church and state, as they say public schools exist to educate, not indoctrinate. But Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill says don’t’ kill or steal should not be controversial.

A bill filed for the upcoming legislative session would allow the Louisiana Department of Ag to get involved in the testing of imported shrimp for banned antibiotics. Director of the Southern Shrimp Alliance, Blake Price, says only a very small percentage of imported shrimp is ever tested for banned antibiotics…

Governor Jeff Landry will be in Shreveport later today to announce what his office calls a major economic development announcement. KTBS-TV is reporting that the state and local leaders are looking to open up three data centers in Caddo and Bossier Parishes.

A bill filed for the upcoming legislative session would add an additional layer in the fight against contaminated shrimp. Currently, the Louisiana Department of Health is the only state agency authorized to seize and destroy imported shrimp found to be contaminated at ports. Under a bill filed by Houma Representative Jessica Domangue, the Department of Ag would be added to that list. The bill has the support of Blake Price, the director of the Southern Shrimp Alliance.

Price says only a very small percentage of imported shrimp is ever tested for banned antibiotics.

The additional round-trip will be in the mid-morning hours and will get underway on April 7th. Monroe Regional Airport Director Charles Butcher hopes this is the continuation of additional economic development wins for the region.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for all of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi from 9 AM to 6 PM today due to critical fire conditions caused by low humidity and gusty winds.  That after several fires across the state caused problems over the weekend, including an active fire in St. Tammany Parish that shut down I-12 between Abita Springs and Lacombe in St. Tammany Parish for three hours.

One person was killed and two were injured in an “industrial accident” at a Belle Rose plant on Sunday.  Assumption Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness Director Paul LeBlanc says a crew was doing a routine pressure test on a brine well at the GIE plant off Grand Bayou Road when a loose hose struck three people, killing one. The other two were air lifted to the hospital.

Wildfires causing problems in in northwest and southeast Louisiana over the weekend.  A stretch of Interstate 12 in St. Tammany Parish was closed for three hours due to active wildfires. Officials announced the closure around 5:30 last night between Abita Springs and Lacombe, reopening around 9.  Meantime, in Livingston Parish, a fire burning near Gum Swamp Road is now under control after scorching more than 200 acres there over the weekend. And a wildfire in the Mora community burned an estimated 30 to 40 acres in southwest Natchitoches Parish yesterday. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

The U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday that challenges against Louisiana’s 10 Commandments law are premature allowing it to go into effect immediately.  The Court vacated preliminary injunctions against the law, ruling against the ACLU. This ruling allows Louisiana public schools to immediately start posting displays of the Ten Commandments.

Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser has made cleaning up litter one of his big priorities. Nungesser says the state recently hired a litter expert to assess the state’s litter problem.

Nungesser says part of that mission is instilling the values of properly disposing of litter at a young age, so the state has launched new programs in schools aimed at doing just that.

Winter, spring, summer and fall – this month, Louisiana has experienced it all. We’re in for another couple days for record-breaking warmth throughout the state. But LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says a cold front will be coming in Sunday  morning, and that will bring a rude awakening.

Ciolino also spoke to us about the US Supreme Court’s decision that strikes down most of President Trump’s tariffs. The court ruled yesterday that Trump did not have the broad authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to unilaterally impose tariffs. Ciolino says this decision is final and will cost the Trump administration billions of dollars in refunds.
